Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Overview

Combining a super telephoto length, bright aperture, and lightweight design, this FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens for Sony E-mount cameras is ideal for sports, wildlife, and nature photographers. The fast 2.8 aperture provides great depth of field control for isolating subjects as well as maximizing performance for low-light shooting situations. Three fluorite elements reduce chromatic aberration and one ED element further increases performance and image quality by reducing flare and ghosting while shooting in harsh conditions.

Weighing in at just 6.4 lb, this lens is incredibly portable for glass of its size. The weight of the lens is also redistributed to the back where it would sit over a monopod, making tracking subjects and panning easier. Complementing that is Sony's XD Linear Motor autofocus system, which quickly and quietly tracks subjects across the frame even while shooting at high speeds. Furthermore, Optical SteadyShot can combine with in-body stabilization to provide 5-axis stabilization.

Video shooters will also be pleased to find power focus functionality, which provides smooth, even focus while shooting movies. The magnesium-alloy body of this lens is also weather sealed to protect against dirt, dust, and moisture while shooting in adverse conditions. A tripod collar can be rotated around the lens to provide maximum functionality with tripods or monopods.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, however it is also suitable for use with APS-C cameras where it provides a 600mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture offers great control over depth of field as well as improved low-light performance.
Three fluorite elements and one extra-low dispersion element reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color accuracy.
Nano AR Coating reduces flare and ghosting, which provides increased better clarity and contrast.
XD Linear Motor System quietly and quickly focuses on fast-moving subjects while shooting at high speeds.
Power Focus functionality for smooth focus during video recording.
Optical SteadyShot Stabilization provides 5-axis image stabilization when paired with a camera that features in-body image stabilization.
Weight distribution is balanced toward the back of the lens, making it easier to pan and track moving subjects.
Magnesium alloy, G Master lens has a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust, dirt, and moisture.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.
Compatible with optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.

Simply the best 400mm 2.8 I ever had. Moved from Nikon to sony after 40 plus years.

The most versatile of the E mount telephoto lenses. Work well with Sony mount CT’s. You have a 400f2.8, a 560f.4, and an 800f5.6, depending on your light and distance situation.

I bought the 400mm lens for the sole purpose of shooting local sports, and I have been very pleased with the results in combination with my 24mm GM and 70-200 GM. To top that off, I just placed a deposit for the 600mm and can't wait to receive it!

Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS This lens was received on January 24, 2020. I am a birding photographer and have been using the A-mount Sony 500mm f/4 and Sony 300mm f/2.8 lenses for several years with the Sony A99M2 camera. This new 400mm lens is my first E-mount super telephoto. It replaced the 300mm f/2.8 A-mount lens and is being used with the Sony mirrorless A7R4 camera. I was very impressed with this new lens from the moment I took it out of the box. The case is very impressive. If you ever take a trip by air with this lens, I’m sure the case will keep it safe. When I took the lens out of the case, I was amazed at how well balanced it is. Most of the weight is at the camera end making the system feel much lighter than it really is. I realize that the mirrorless cameras don’t require micro focus adjust but that is how I tested the new lens. I used the micro focus chart as my target to see if the lens would produce a sharp image. I was extremely well impressed with the sharpness of the image at f/2.8. When I stopped down to f/4 then f/5.6 and f/8 the sharpness of the image was awesome in the center of the chart and all that changed from one f/stop to the next was the depth of field. In the past two weeks I’ve put the new system through quite an extensive field trial and it has performed extremely well both with and without the Sony 1.4x tele-converter. The lens is easy to handle. It is very responsive. Focus is nearly instantaneous and very accurate. It’s an expensive piece of equipment but I believe it is well worth the price.

Probablythe best lens I’ve ever used. Paired with A9, it snapped to focus consistently with very few misses ( football gamws with forward and lateral motion). Relatively light weight. For sports, there is nothing better.

So far I love this lens.

I've only shot with this for a couple of weeks, but the lens is tack sharp. I also bought the 1.4x Teleconverter but I'm not sure I'll ever use it. I did some comparisons between shots with the Teleconverters (both 1.4x and 2.0x) and to my eyes, an enlargement using Topaz Gigapixel from a shot with the 400mm Lens with no converter is as good or better. Your Mileage May Vary. Add to that the increased difficulty of following birds in flight with the longer focal length and I think I'd rather shoot at f2.8 with the 400mm.

Being a wildlife and bird photographer, this lens is amazing. Tack sharp with the 2X teleconverter. Mostly use it on the 7RIII with sharp and fast focus. The lens takes Sony to another standard. I am waiting for the 600 to be a available since sometimes I need a little more reach.

Which is good for wildlife 600mm f4 GM or 400mm f2.8 GM.
Asked by: Amit
I agree with Kirk, both of these lenses would be excellent for wildlife photography. I have been using the 400mm f/2.8 for about a month now and love it. I am primarily a birding photographer. The 400 works great with and without the 1.4x tele-converter. It is very well balanced and very easily hand held. The 600mm f/4 should be an awesome lens as well. The primary difference is that the 600 will not be as easy to hand hold. My experience has been with the Sony 500mm f/4 A-mount lens. It is a bit heavier than the E-mount 600 but I have always used it with a sturdy tripod and gimbal head.

While the case is small enough to fit in most overhead compartments, it is best to check with the airline you're using for their specific restrictions on what can be carried on.
