Fast G Master Super-Telephoto Prime
Blending advanced lens technologies with a refined and relatively lightweight design, the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS is a fast super-telephoto prime purpose-built for sports and wildlife shooters working in trying conditions. Offering reach and speed, this G Master lens also achieves remarkable image quality while remaining easy to use handheld, thanks to the balanced design an Optical SteadyShot image stabilization.
Innovative Optical Design
  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance of impressive resolution and sharpness along with distinctive and pleasing bokeh.
  • Large f/2.8 maximum aperture enables working in difficult lighting conditions and also provides extremely shallow depth of field for isolating subjects from busy backgrounds.
  • Three fluorite elements and one extra-low dispersion element minimize axial and lateral chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing, for high clarity and color accuracy.
  • Nano AR coating has been applied to interior lens surfaces to suppress reflections that cause flare and ghosting.
  • G Master optical design also contributes to low spherical aberrations, for high sharpness, as well as a pleasing bokeh quality that is further benefits by a rounded 11-blade diaphragm.
Fast Focusing and Reliable OSS
  • XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motor System quietly and quickly focuses on fast-moving subjects while shooting at high speeds.
  • High-precision XD motor system is also complemented by updated AF algorithms for improved responsiveness and quieter operation, further benefitting sports and wildlife applications.
  • Power Focus functionality for smooth focus during video recording.
  • Full-time DMF supports manually adjusting focus simply by turning the focusing ring, regardless of the focusing mode, and Linear Response MF provides a natural and responsive focus feeling for more precise manual control.
  • Focus range limiter switch and preset focus functions increase focusing efficiency either within a certain constrained range or immediately to a specified focusing point.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake to better enable making sharp shots when working handheld.
  • When used on a camera body featuring in-body image stabilization, 5-axis stabilization is available for more robust support.
  • Three difference stabilization modes can be used depending on the shooting situation: Mode 1 for general shooting, Mode 2 for panning shooting, and Mode 3 prioritizes accurate framing when photographing and tracking fast and erratically moving subjects.
Professional Durability and Intuitive Handling
  • Weather-sealed construction to protect against dust, dirt, and moisture.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dirt and fingerprints and is also easier to clean.
  • Weighing just 6.4 lb, this lens is incredibly portable for an f/2.8 super-telephoto. The weight of the lens is also distributed toward the back, where it would sit over a monopod, making tracking subjects and panning easier.
  • In addition to the weight-saving use of fluorite elements in the optical design, the external barrel design makes extensive use of magnesium alloy to contribute to the lightweight-yet-durable construction.
  • Increased mount strength for ensured rigidity that will withstand professional use.
  • Function ring near the front of the lens can be set to control a preset focus position or can be assigned to power focus or other selectable features via an in-camera menu.
  • Four separate focus hold buttons can be customized to adjust or activate a variety of settings, such as Eye AF.
  • The rear of the lens features a drop-in filter slot that accepts 40.5mm round filters.
  • Rotating tripod collar features ball bearings for smooth movements along with detents at each 90° position for intuitive handling. These clicks can also be deactivated.
  • As an additional weight-saving element, the included lens hood is made from carbon fiber.
  • Compatible with optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.

Really expensive. Worth every cent. Heavy as heck. Worth every ounce. Defines the word, sharp.

Amazing lens. Not much else to say. Everything about it is perfect. Super light (I always hand hold it), blazing fast and accurate autofocus, and the rendering/contrast is killer. It can be used for far more than sports and wildlife. Events, graduations, etc.

Exceeded expectations in every way

I bought this lens right before leaving for a 7-day photo workshop in Botswana. I am 5' 3 and was able to hand hold the lens on my A1 body with a battery pack when I needed more flexibility to get the best shot. I found the lens easily fit in my Think Tank backpack along with one other lens and 2 camera bodies. Nearly all of my photos were tack sharp and the combination of this lens with the A1 body was all I needed. I brought an extender but never needed it. I really debated between the 400 and 600 and if you have the A1 body, I think you'll be happy with the 400 - even for birding and higher ISOs needed for low light.

Terrific!

A Birder's Dream

By Jeff

We thought were living the dream a couple of years ago when we purchased the A9/ 200-600 combination. Well, the A1/ 400 2.8 combination is Nirvana. For years we had avoided buying a prime lens because shooting from a tripod costs too many shots, especially when trying to shoot flying birds. When we read the specs on this lens it was an immediate want vs. wallet dilemma. When want turned to lust, the mission to find one for sale somewhere in America was on. The lens arrived late last September right before our fall Yellowstone trip. Within an hour of its arrival, we threw it on the A1 and went searching for something to shoot. We found an egret in a shady corner of a shady pond. When the bird tool flight, we clicked the shutter. We looked through the viewfinder skeptical of what we'd find. The way the autofocus had immediately locked on combined with the clarity of the shot just blew us away. Time after time this winter the autofocus on flying eagles was virtually instantaneous. When combined with the A1, the focus remains locked on the bird even when it flies through tree branches! If you're a serious wildlife photographer, amateur or professional, re-mortgage the house, sell the car, eat peanut butter sandwiches for a year....but, you have to have this lens.

I purchased this lens to use for indoor/outdoor sporting events and for wildlife photography. This lens is light weight, fast focusing and sharp. It is a joy to use; I have no complaints.

I love every about the Len Except for the lens hood. It would be a lot better if it was like the Minolta 600 lines that I had at one time, the Lions hood slid back it did not come off the lens I really like that all you had to do was slide it back and twist it and lock it on and then put the lens cover on.

Which is good for wildlife 600mm f4 GM or 400mm f2.8 GM.
Asked by: Amit
I agree with Kirk, both of these lenses would be excellent for wildlife photography. I have been using the 400mm f/2.8 for about a month now and love it. I am primarily a birding photographer. The 400 works great with and without the 1.4x tele-converter. It is very well balanced and very easily hand held. The 600mm f/4 should be an awesome lens as well. The primary difference is that the 600 will not be as easy to hand hold. My experience has been with the Sony 500mm f/4 A-mount lens. It is a bit heavier than the E-mount 600 but I have always used it with a sturdy tripod and gimbal head.
