Breakthrough Photography X4-ND3-100MM overview

  • 1Description

The 100 x 100mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 0.9 Filter from Breakthrough Photography is a square ND filter with an 8x filter factor that provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. This neutral density filter is designed to avoid affecting the coloration of the image and is ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, the glass features several layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also increases the durability of the filter and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating provides an additional layer over the front MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency. Each X4 ND filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity.

0.9 neutral density filter darkens the image by 3 stops, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Designed to not affect coloration of the image, making it ideal for stacking with other filters.
Each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating to prevent internal ghosting and reflections.
Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Constructed from Schott B270 glass for optical clarity.

    Breakthrough Photography X4-ND3-100MM reviews

    100 x 100mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 0.9 Filter (3 Stop) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Perfect I've been a big fan of the BP X4 line since they released as a standard screw mount. The chance to start using their glass in my front filter system was not to be missed. There is little to no color shift noticeable with this filter and it provides the perfect amount of ND for those shots that are just a bit too bright. If you use a 100x100mm front filter system then I highly recommend you look at Breakthrough Photography for your needs. As a side note, thickness on this filter is 2mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More neutral than Switzerland So happy this company is making these. As a filmmaker, the most prevalent problem I have with ND filters is actually surface reflections, followed closely by color cast. This one has exhibited very low reflectivity between the filter and the lens front, and the color cast truly is nil. Very well built, not as thick as a Schneider but fits nicely into my matte box all the same. Extremely happy with my 0.9 (it basically lives in my matte box), and I just bought the 1.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter I bought this for a trip to Iceland and used it with the Nisi holder. I like the neutral color of this filter unlike the Lee GND and B+W 10 stopper which gave bad color casts. I just wish the foam to prevent light leaks were closer to the edge to prevent the foam from interfering with the image. It didn't but sometimes if I didn't center the filter correctly it would get into my picture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Anomalous design? but results OK/ This review applies to the X4 ND 100 mm 10 stop filter AND the X100 filter holder. Because the filter holder was not available through B&H I purchased the items directly from Breakthrough. The next 6 paragraphs are an edited and revised version of the email I sent to Graham Clark, the founder of Breakthrough Photography (who invites direct communication with him but from whom I received no response), followed by the results of test shots I took with the filter and holder. I had not used a holder and slide-in square filter system before buying the Breakthrough X100 filter holder and the X4 ND 100 mm 10 stop filter. But I knew that light leakage is often described as a problem or condition that can affect these systems. Indeed, Breakthrough's circular magnetic filters (which are NOT reviewed here) are promoted as reducing or eliminating that problem (and I purchased two). I am a mechanical engineer and closely examined the filter holder and slide-in 10 stop 100 mm filter assembled together on the 77mm adapter attached to my lens. The filter is nominally 100 mm square and I measured the opening in the holder to be nominally the same diameter. But when the filter is carefully inserted into the holder there is still a visible gap at the "top" and "bottom" between the filter and the holder such that I can see the lens element beneath them. This is, in part, because the rubber(?) light seal is set back about 4 mm from the filter edges allowing the circumference of the holder opening to extend beyond the light seal. Obviously this gap diminishes as the angle of the radius to the seal drops below 90 degrees. I have attached 4 photos illustrating this problem. A description of each photo is provided below after the signature. If the filter was perhaps even 10 mm longer the seals would extend beyond the maximum holder opening diameter and potentially eliminate this problem (subject to the issue explained in the next paragraph). Since soft and hard graduated ND filters that are 150 mm long are also used in this holder, adding some length to the square filters should be achievable. I don't know the issues that may exist with respect to slightly reducing the holder's maximum hole diameter as an alternative means to eliminate this gap. Which brings me to my second observation: With the X100 holder attached to the lens and the 100 mm square filter inserted, if I look between the filter and the holder along an axis parallel to the flat plane of the filter I can see light all the way across (left to right) between the filter and holder. (I was not able to photograph this). This means that at no point along the "top" and "bottom" of the holder is the light seal actually contacting the face of the holder. (Obviously I can't see this from the "sides" because the filter mounting slot assembly blocks the view). Thus, it appears that the seal does not make actual contact with the holder anywhere along the "top" or "bottom" (or, presumably, along the sides as well). If this is the way it is designed, I suggest it needs improvement. Next, I noted that the X100's small red thumb screw, used to tighten the holder and prevent rotation, can be screwed all the way out. This design almost ensures that it will be lost at some point. The screw needs a "stop" so that it can be unscrewed sufficiently to allow easy attachment of the holder to the adapter, but not enough to fall out and be lost. I have attached a close up photo showing the gap between the filter and holder. The bright white light is the reflection of a flashlight (held on the other side) bouncing off the lens and reflecting out through the gap. ____________________________________ I then went out and tested the slide-in filter and holder on a sunny Florida morning. Photos were taken at 11 am. My camera was pointed at approximately 200 degrees; the sun's azimuth was about 160 degrees; and its' elevation was about 75 degrees. Without shading the filter, a diagonal, blurry purple flare appeared in the lower right quadrant of the images. (The attached image shows the flare). Shading the lens/filter etc with my wide brimmed hat prevented the flare. There were no apparent light leaks that I could discern. I did not shoot at any other sun to camera angles that day but plan to do so in the future. I was unable to discern any color cast but my testing was inappropriate to evaluate that issue. I am not sure what conclusions to draw. The design of the side-in filter and holder would seem to invite unnecessary light leaks but none appeared in my test shots. Photos taken at other sun/camera angles may produce different results. The purple flare was eliminated by shading the lens. (In other testing that I did with Breakthrough's circular magnetic X4 ND 6 stop filter, shooting near sunset with the sun just outside the camera frame the images had no lens flare). I end this review with my very high compliments for Breakthrough's packaging and guarantee. The filters, holders, etc come in sturdy white boxes (sort of like Apple's Iphone) and a small lens cloth is packaged with each item. The slide-in filters also come with labeled zippered pouches lined with soft "velveteen"-like material. The magnetic circular filters come in hard plastic containers (inside the sturdy white box). The 25 year guarantee is terrific but is obviously only as good as the longevity of the company.
