Breakthrough Photography X4-ND6-67MM overview

  • 1Description

The 67mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter from Breakthrough Photography is a circular ND filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, the glass features eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also increases the durability of the filter and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating provides an additional ninth layer over the front MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

This X4 ND filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity and features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention.

    Breakthrough Photography X4-ND6-67MM reviews

    67mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter (6 Stop) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 186.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Quality! After much research reading comparisons of the 10-stop ND filters, I settled on the Breakthrough filter. I was not disappointed! The filter produces extremely clear images with no color cast, as was discussed in the reviews and comparisons. I have only had this filter a few weeks, and used it on one outing to our Botanical Gardens with my Nikon D7100. The shots were bracketed since I have some HDR software that I was also trying. I am a novice at using these filters, but was pleased with my first try. I am looking forward to buying some of their other filters as well. Excellent company. Excellent warranty!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't beat this one I was a bit skeptical as I've never heard of this company before, but I read many reviews online saying this was the best out there, so I ended up biting the bullet and bought the 3-stop, 6-stop and 10-stop densities. Optical quality - I don't see any loss in sharpness when zoomed in on my Canon 5Ds R files at 100%, very impressive. Coatings - as others have said, the coating quality is a quantum leap versus my other ND filters more expensive than this one. Build quality - you can feel the quality of these filters. Very thin but still has front threads, which is important to me as I stack sometimes. Will probably get their new X4 CPL when it's available on B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it. This is by far the most neutral of the status quo. I have tried Firecrest 16 stop, and Singh-Ray Variable ND, and B+W 10 stop, which is my primary filter, but the first time I tried Breakthrough's 10 stop, was when I realized that neutral in ND is actually an achievable concept. This is by far, and I really mean by far, the most neutral of all the filters I have tried so far, with no perceivable compromise on sharpness. I shoot long exposures almost exclusively, and so I know what I'm talking about. I haven't tried this with really long exposures of 7-10 minutes yet, but the 1-2 minutes results absolutely blew me away. I highly highly recommend it you will be doing yourself a huge favor if you give this a try as you are looking to invest in ND filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NEUTRAL! I just tested this against my B+W 110 ND 3.0 and all I can say is WOW!The control no filter is on the left.I created a custom X-Rite Passport Color Calibration for the no filter file and applied it and its custom WB (from the light grey patch above the green patch) in Lightroom to the filtered shots. As you can see the middle frame is just about a match to the left, while the right frame is way off. They were all shot using a 100w incandescent bulb in a Smith Victor PL-8 housing and metered the surface within 1/10 - 2/10 stop with a Minolta Auto Meter IV F and the flat diffuser. Check my eBay listings soon for my B+W ND's, ha!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality and Truly Neutral in Color )I am big fan of B+W filters, and was about to purchase a B+W ND filter. However, I decided to research about ND filters before choosing one. I was glad I did because I discovered Breakthrough Photography filters. After reading several sites which compare performance of ND filters (for example: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/10-Stop-Neutral-Density-Filter.aspx) as well as reviews here at B&H Photo, I decided to buy a BP filter. Based on premiliminary tests I have done, this filter is truly Neutral in color, uses high quality German Schott glass, and high quality CNC machining. Package reads: Designed in San Francisco, glass made in Germany, CNC machined in China.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from well constructed but with a distinct color cast This is a beautifully made filter, with Schott glass and a nicely knurled brass ring. However, it has a substantial blue tint. This surprised me, given the positive review comments about its color neutrality. I did several test shots comparing no filter, this filter, a 3-stop Marumi, and a 10-stop Hoya. The Marumi and Hoya were pretty much spot on. The X3 had a substantial bluish or teal tint. Given the other reviews, I wondered whether there had simply been a bad batch, but I got no reply to e-mails to Breakthrough, so I had to return it to B&H. To give them credit, I also bought their X4 circular polarizer, and it seems superb.
