Breakthrough Photography X4-ND6-72MM overview

  • 1Description

The 72mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter from Breakthrough Photography is a circular ND filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, the glass features eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also increases the durability of the filter and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating provides an additional ninth layer over the front MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

This X4 ND filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity and features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention.

    Breakthrough Photography X4-ND6-72MM reviews

    72mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter (6 Stop) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality and Truly Neutral in Color )I am big fan of B+W filters, and was about to purchase a B+W ND filter. However, I decided to research about ND filters before choosing one. I was glad I did because I discovered Breakthrough Photography filters. After reading several sites which compare performance of ND filters (for example: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/10-Stop-Neutral-Density-Filter.aspx) as well as reviews here at B&H Photo, I decided to buy a BP filter. Based on premiliminary tests I have done, this filter is truly Neutral in color, uses high quality German Schott glass, and high quality CNC machining. Package reads: Designed in San Francisco, glass made in Germany, CNC machined in China.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best optical quality and craftsmanship I was a bit skeptical as I've never heard of this company before, but I read many reviews online saying this was the best out there, so I ended up biting the bullet and bought the 3-stop, 6-stop and 10-stop densities. Optical quality - I don't see any loss in sharpness when zoomed in on my Canon 5Ds R files at 100%, very impressive. Coatings - as others have said, the coating quality is a quantum leap versus my other ND filters more expensive than this one. Build quality - you can feel the quality of these filters. Very thin but still has front threads, which is important to me as I stack sometimes. Will probably get their new X4 CPL when it's available on B&H.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from well constructed but with a distinct color cast This is a beautifully made filter, with Schott glass and a nicely knurled brass ring. However, it has a substantial blue tint. This surprised me, given the positive review comments about its color neutrality. I did several test shots comparing no filter, this filter, a 3-stop Marumi, and a 10-stop Hoya. The Marumi and Hoya were pretty much spot on. The X3 had a substantial bluish or teal tint. Given the other reviews, I wondered whether there had simply been a bad batch, but I got no reply to e-mails to Breakthrough, so I had to return it to B&H. To give them credit, I also bought their X4 circular polarizer, and it seems superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality, colour neutral, sharp as a tack This is a brilliant filter, or series of filters, as I bought this and the X3 10-stop and circ polariser too. I can't detect any colour cast whatsoever, unlike almost all of the ND filters I've previously used. The gnurled, easy to grip edge is perfect for quick removal, and I quickly lost any fear of getting it stuck. I've used it on a 16-35mm lens (on full frame, cropped sensor would be 10-20mm equiv) and the filter edge rim is thin enough to cause no vignetting. My images using this filter are as sharp as without it. Packaging, and attention to detail, like the free lens cloth, are top-notch, and overall I'm very glad I went with these guys, and trusted a new name. I'm sure we'll hear a lot more about them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Correcting my 2-star review It's not possible to edit a review here, so I am posting this to correct my earlier 2-star review, in which I said that Breakthrough did not get back to me when I found a color cast in my X3 ND. Turns out that Graham, who runs the company, was traveling. He did get back to me--called me and traded e-mails. I sent him some test shots, and he replied that they would like to swap the filter for another so that they can test it and see what happened. That's superb customer service. I can't remember another case where the head of a company called to talk about a problem with a product, let alone while traveling. Given the other good reviews of the color neutrality of these filters, and quality of my Breakthrough CPL (which has no noticeable color cast at all), I suspect I got one from a bad batch. In any case, they won my loyalty as a customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally... a well designed and implemented ND filter! After 45 years of wrestling with a number of different ND filters, all of which seemed to introduced unmanageable color shifts, significant light fall-off, and vignetting with wide-angle lenses, the Breakthrough Photography X3 1.8 filter has finally met the challenge with minimal color shift, virtually no detectable light fall-off, and a thin overall design that, when used in the 82mm configuration on my 16mm-35mm Sony/Zeiss lens (with 72mm-82mm step-up ring) does not vignette at 16mm. Great filter!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Stopper Stopper Had previously tried the Lee Big Stopper but found it a pain working with the colour cast in post. As soon as I heard about these filters I ordered one (delivery to Australia incidentally was quick, cheap and incident free) and I'm so glad I did. There's virtually no cast present in my shots and it enables me to take those cool , 1/5 and moving water shots in broad daylight. Thumbs up (literally) for the grip on this too - very easy to remove as opposed to that fine tooth grip you get on most filters.
