Breakthrough Photography X4-ND10-58MM overview

  • 1Description

The 58mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter from Breakthrough Photography is a circular ND filter with a 1000x filter factor that provides a 10-stop exposure reduction. Its 3.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, the glass features eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also increases the durability of the filter and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating provides an additional ninth layer over the front MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

This X4 ND filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity and features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention.

    Breakthrough Photography X4-ND10-58MM reviews

    58mm X4 Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter (10 Stop) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 83.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Quality! After much research reading comparisons of the 10-stop ND filters, I settled on the Breakthrough filter. I was not disappointed! The filter produces extremely clear images with no color cast, as was discussed in the reviews and comparisons. I have only had this filter a few weeks, and used it on one outing to our Botanical Gardens with my Nikon D7100. The shots were bracketed since I have some HDR software that I was also trying. I am a novice at using these filters, but was pleased with my first try. I am looking forward to buying some of their other filters as well. Excellent company. Excellent warranty!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it. This is by far the most neutral of the status quo. I have tried Firecrest 16 stop, and Singh-Ray Variable ND, and B+W 10 stop, which is my primary filter, but the first time I tried Breakthrough's 10 stop, was when I realized that neutral in ND is actually an achievable concept. This is by far, and I really mean by far, the most neutral of all the filters I have tried so far, with no perceivable compromise on sharpness. I shoot long exposures almost exclusively, and so I know what I'm talking about. I haven't tried this with really long exposures of 7-10 minutes yet, but the 1-2 minutes results absolutely blew me away. I highly highly recommend it you will be doing yourself a huge favor if you give this a try as you are looking to invest in ND filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NEUTRAL! I just tested this against my B+W 110 ND 3.0 and all I can say is WOW!The control no filter is on the left.I created a custom X-Rite Passport Color Calibration for the no filter file and applied it and its custom WB (from the light grey patch above the green patch) in Lightroom to the filtered shots. As you can see the middle frame is just about a match to the left, while the right frame is way off. They were all shot using a 100w incandescent bulb in a Smith Victor PL-8 housing and metered the surface within 1/10 - 2/10 stop with a Minolta Auto Meter IV F and the flat diffuser. Check my eBay listings soon for my B+W ND's, ha!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Filter. Beautiful Design. I own a B+W 3.0 ND filter and I got fed up with the magenta color cast, which I find to be very hard to remove in post. So I ordered this Breakthrough ND filter to replace it. This is a great filter for increasing exposure time, introducing motion blur, and removing people from landscapes. I use it for daytime time-lapse movies, and other general purpose long-exposure landscape photos. I've used it at 16mm+ on my 6D with no vignetting, and NO COLOR CAST. The knurled outside ring makes it much easier to remove than other standard designs. Given that the Breakthrough Photography product is the same price as the 82mm B+W, but with superior optics, build, and warranty, it's a no-brainer buy. I'll be looking to Breakthrough for my future filter needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most color neutral I've used so far While there's no such thing as a completely color neutral ND, this company claimed (and guaranteed?) this one is the most color neutral. I was a bit skeptical as I've never heard of this company before, but I read many reviews online saying this was the best out there, so I ended up biting the bullet and bought the 3-stop, 6-stop and 10-stop densities. Optical quality - I don't see any loss in sharpness when zoomed in on my Canon 5Ds R files at 100%, very impressive. Coatings - as others have said, the coating quality is a quantum leap versus my other ND filters more expensive than this one. Build quality - you can feel the quality of these filters. Very thin but still has front threads, which is important to me as I stack sometimes. Will probably get their new X4 CPL when it's available on B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding filter I had purchased this from another vendor before B&H picked it up. I chose it because some very solid reviews had shown it to maintain color without the usual blue or red tint with most high-density filters. In testing it out I have found the color reproduction to be very good and the sharpness of the image to be excellent. It works very well to remove moving objects from landscapes; it is also neat to create ghosts in images. Needless to say a tripod is a must.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great 10 stop ND filter..... Like most everybody I did lots of homework on this filter. I had recently purchased a Tiffen kit but needed a really good 10 stop filter. I did color comparisons and Breakthrough had the best and truest color reproduction of all the screw on filters I looked at. I wanted to stay with screw on filters for portability vs. the Lee Big Stopper. After a day and evening in the Arizona sun I knew I had the right filter. The shots were Awesome!! Color was spot on and the clouds were streaked wonderfully. I got a shot of a fountain and was surprised at the clarity of in focus surrounding area and the silky smooth fountain. I would highly recommend the Breakthrough ND filter to anyone. Don't waste your time with the cheapo filters as all you will get is ill colored images and wasted time and effort. GREAT PRODUCT!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best ND10 for the price Excellent evenness and rendition of detail combined with low profile and easy to use knurled ring make this a winner. Like all ND 10's there is a colour cast but it is very minor and towards blue so images are easy to appraise without white balance correction. The level of blue cast to my eyes appeared much the same as you would typically see in many point and click cameras. I tried hard to induce internal reflections between this filter and the lense by removing the lens hood and angling towards an afternoon sun but was unable to produce more than what the lens did by itself. You might find some on an even single colour background but real world shots don't show. Low profile perfect for the Canon 16-35Mk2, would definitely recommend for others as well. Product comes in very sturdy cardboard package and fairly solid non brittle plastic holder so it should survive all but the worst transport.
