Peak Design CC-BK-3 Overview

This black Clip for Capture v3 from Peak Design serves as a replacement part or as an additional support point for the Capture v3 harness system. By equipping more than one bag or strap with Capture clips, you can carry several cameras at once or switch between the two clips easily for comfortable and versatile use. Note that a plate is not included with this product, and must be purchased separately in order to carry equipment.

Keeping a slim profile at only 3.3" in length and weighing just 2.5 oz, the clip uses included thumbscrews or hex-head bolts to clamp onto any strap or belt as wide as 2.5" and as thick as 0.87". It is made of weatherproof aluminum to resist rust and is designed to withstand up to 200 lb of force. The clip is equipped with a quick release button so you can instantly grab your camera and start shooting, and it has a security lock that can be activated to prevent accidental release during longer trips. For enhanced stability, an anti-slip pad is used on the back plate for grip. All legacy Peak Design plates work with the Capture v3 clip except for the DUALplate v1, allowing you to carry objects such as lenses, binoculars, or GoPro cameras with optional accessories.

Good, But Screws Loosen Frequently

I used the clip on an old pack with APS-C camera (Sony A6400) and 16-70mm lens. Placed on lowest part of pack strap. No problems getting the camera in and out and seemed secure. Caveat: As others have mentioned, screws on clip and also the screw on camera come loose frequently. To be safe, I checked them at each rest stop on my hike (every 30-60 minutes). At one point my camera was sitting in my day pack for 2 days while I was hiking. I discovered the camera plate had come loose. Another time the plate came loose after a day or two of hiking and getting camera in and out. No mishaps, fortunately. The hand tightened screws came loose regularly and had to be tightened several times during a day hike. However, the clip never fell off. Conclusion: With frequent attention to keeping all the screws tightened, worked well. However, this is not a set it and forget it steup.

As advertised. Super useful. No complaints. Just make sure it’s screwed in!

I refuse to wear a backpack that doesn't have a Capture attached to it. In fact my main two photo backpacks have one on each side, it's that good! Quality and functionality are both top notch!

I bought this clip to have a convenient place to store my camera and still be able to use both hands. This clip just works and saved me a lot of trouble when im out shooting and needed both of my hands to do something. Great for lens changing too.

Many design flaws

I like my Peak Design Slide Lite strap so thought I'd try the capture clip with the dual plate for carrying my camera on my belt. The problems: - The clip is overpriced. - In winter, when a coat covers my belt, I can't use it. - I never really knew whether I had turned the knurled knobs tight enough because there's little tactile feedback. - The bolts that come out of the back of the clip are too sharp. - When mounting the camera, I couldn't see whether the plate was entering the clip correctly. Both the clip and plate are pure black, and it's kind of dark down there when I'm walking in the woods, so I had to try repeatedly to get the camera in place. - After two days of use, the black finish on the clip and plate was chipping off. - After attaching the clip, it blocked my pocket, and my belt and pants sagged badly. - With the dual plate, you can't mount the camera so it's pointing down. It mounts only horizontally (i.e., sideways), in either of two directions (with the lens pointing in or out). This can be awkward with a large lens. - The dual plate does not always lock reliably into a Manfrotto quick-release tripod head. It does go in more reliably in one direction than the other, which the Peak Design instructions say nothing about. - The release button is finicky. If pressed all the way down and held, the plate gets stuck on the clip at the end of the sliding motion. It works, however, if you press and release the button while sliding the camera, or if you press it only part way. - The open hook on one side of the clip is a failure point inviting disaster. When I tried mounting a fairly large (but not huge) lens and DSLR on the clip, the torque made the clip open at the hook, though I had tightened the knobs as much as I could. The camera popped right out. Lucky I was still holding it! - After this, I tried the bolts that tighten with an Allen wrench. Again, little tactile feedback. It seemed that I could go on tightening forever and destroy my belt. I could never continue using this system and risk dropping a $4,000 camera and lens, so I returned it. No problem getting a refund from B&H. Overall, an inelegant -- actually a primitive -- solution for carrying a camera on a belt. Carrying anything on a belt doesn't generally work, I find. Belts are for holding up pants, not getting weighed down with gear. Now I'm even feeling less confident in my Slide Lite strap. Hopefully I'll get over that.

It's all good until it's not

This is a novel way of carrying a camera and the clip works. But let us think about it: 1. Where do you put your camera down when you want to get something out of your pack? 2. What happens if you forget to bring a hex key to tighten the plate? 3. What happens if the arca compatible base plate doesn't lock into your tripod head safely and you move the tripod? 4. What happens to the strap of your rucksack when it wears out from having to endlessly retighten the screws? Bring a spare camera strap. All of these things happened to me when using this system. I've owned many 'Peak' Design (lol such hubris) products from their bags to their straps to this clip, and they all had some fatal flaw. They have a lifetime warranty for a reason, and it isn't a good one. Don't buy 'Peak' Design products. Buy Billingham or DSPTCH or any of the other chic brands out these days. When you buy 'Peak' you're only paying for fluff and advertising.

Exactly What I Wanted

I got tired of hiking with my Fuji X-t3 constantly banging against me while hiking. This clip keeps the camera out of the way but quickly accessible.

Not useful for serious hiking

Construction is up to their usual high quality standards. It feels secure in the top insertion configuration. The thumb screws have a marked tendency to come loose over time, so I would check those regularly. Backpack compatibility perhaps points at its effective use case: it is minimally compatible with the larger padded straps you'll find on big backpacks. It's not compatible with the F-Stop Tilopa. It might be compatible with the Ajna. It is marginally compatible with my Osprey 65L. The big one though: it's straight up uncomfortable, even with no camera, when used for serious hiking. My use case is to have the camera more convenient when hiking (think 10-15 miles with 30 or more pounds on my back). With the camera attached (z7ii + 24-70 f/4 kit lens) it causes physical pain within minutes if I've been on the trail for awhile. I find it more uncomfortable than awkwardly using a sling for a little while. Without the camera, the backing rubs, and I found it actively uncomfortable by mile 10. Due to marginal compatibility, while I bought the Pro Pad, it didn't fit properly so it couldn't distribute the pressure any better. At the end of my last 15 mile hike I found I had a bruise from where the Capture Clip was resting even though in this particular case I had never attached my camera at all! It does get the camera out of the way of the hiking poles, which is good, but that's about the only positive part of the setup. In sum: I wouldn't buy this product if you're doing anything serious. It's probably tenable for light duty, short walks. If you're at all serious about outdoors activity, you'll need to figure out something else or it will cause you an injury.

Asked by: Philip
Yes, the Peak Design Clip for Capture v3 (Black) can support either of those configurations when firmly clamped to the shoulder strap of a Lowepro Flipside Trek Backpack. This will support the Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Camera with either the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens or the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens mounted.

You cannot connect just any Arca-Type Compatible plate to the Peak Design Clip for Capture v3 (Black). However, the included Peak Design Standard Quick Release Plate is Arca-Type Compatible and will mount on an Arca-Type Compatible tripod head and the clip.
