Dracast LED180 Overview

While the first thing that catches your eye is the LED180 Halo Bi-Color Ringlight's unique form, Dracast demonstrates its versatility through performance and convenience features that stress flexibility in design. The LED180 offers color temperature that's variable from 3200 to 5600 and anywhere in between to blend seamlessly with other fixtures, or to meet the challenge of inconsistent ambient light conditions without the burden of applying filters. Light intensity is also adjustable from 0-100% with a simple twist of a knob.

While most light fixtures have a degree of directionality that allows selective lighting, the Halo is omnidirectional, bathing your subject in soft, flattering, near-shadowless light that is very kind to skin tones. Dracast employs 252 surface-mounted LEDs softened by a diffusion filter, and maintains a high CRI of 96, indicating an accurate rendering of color.

You can use the Halo as you would a traditional fixture - on a light stand placed to one side of your subject for wrap-around light and open shadows. It's when you place the camera lens into the center of the 19" ring that the Halo shows its true nature. You can use it combined with harder light sources to create a soft fill light, and since the Halo dims from 0-100%, you won't have to jockey the fixture around the set to obtain the required level of light. It's when it's used alone that its signature characteristics emerge - soft light on the face, head and shoulders, for instance, with sharp shadows cast exactly behind the body. The circular catchlights reflected in your subject's eyes also have a striking effect, especially up close.

The LED180 Halo is ready for worldwide use thanks to the inclusion of a multi-voltage AC adapter. A hot shoe adapter, phone adapter, diffusion filter, and a carry case are also included.

This just came in and imagine my joy to find, the half of the power-supply that plugs into the wall is nowhere to be found. Box wasnt damaged unit doesnt look used its just not there. Lucky for me Ive got a laptop charge cord that works. Ive reached out to B&H hopefully they can help me out might have been a mess up at factory so might not even be their fault. Moving on Hands on: Its made of plastic and it comes from China, this doesnt make it any less useful. The controls work and you can see the temp of the light change as you work the dial intensity seems to drop slightly even at full power as you head toward cool side of spectrum. Light feels good and even no complaints. The adjustable head, well it feels like your going to break it even when you loosen it up significantly as you change your vertical angle, It is cool that theres a click and set notches but its too stiff and will make you worry youll stress the light adjusting it too many times. The phone mount: If you have a larger phone it will not fit. The mount doesnt feel all that secure so Im hesitant to put My canon on it likely wont. However dont let this get you down if you butt up a tripod behind it the ring is still ample enough to shoot through. Overall: I picked this up on sale so using it purely as a ring light ignoring the phone mount and stiff adjustment id say it fair to good a few tweak would make it great but the failure to include a functioning power-supply make it just OK.

Flimsy build

Mounting points on this light is a joke. All plastic, best for point-n-shoot or mobile phones only! Light output is great, Just poorly build.

Easy to use, great lighting. Seems sturdy. Only (minor) complaint is that the sticker for the controls came off within the first few days of use. Easy enough to tape it back on though.

Great light for Studio work.

I enjoy setting up portraits with continuous lighting. I can do more posing and shooting verse remote shooting by changing batteries or losing a wireless connection.

But fragile construction. It is useful, use it with neatness.

I got one of these when it was on sale for $89. For that price its as perfect of a ring light as you could hope for. I do wish it had the option of using batteries though. Its built mostly of cheap feeling plastic so I dont expect it to last for years and years but again, for 89 bucks it has the potential to pay itself off almost immediately.

what is the inner diameter opening measurement?
Asked by: Ben
The inner diameter is 14 inches. However, I've used this ring light for more than just over lens. in a pinch, it makes a great rim light. For the price, it's worth it.

can this be mounted on a tripod?

can this be mounted on a tripod?
Asked by: Mitchell
I don't believe so unless they make a babypin to 1/4 inch female adapter. This will not screw onto a regular camera tripod that has a 3/8 or 1/4 inch screw unless you can find an adapter such as a baby pin with a female bottom that can screw onto the tripod. This will work with a c-stand or light stand or any mount that has a pin.

question

What is the measured light output?
Asked by: Nick H.
I do not have the precise photometrics, but the output of the Halo 180 should be roughly equivalent to 325 Watts of hot tungsten or halogen light. // Also, if there are any other technical or product related questions, feel free to contact us directly at any time at [email protected]

question

Can this light comfortably surround an iPad (like how it's surrounding an iPhone in the picture)?
Asked by: Ana D.
Maybe. The holder which comes with the light is not large enough to hold an iPad, even an iPad Mini. But the phone holder attaches to the light with a hot-shoe type mount. If you can find a mount like that which has a bracket that can hold an iPad, then you can use this with an iPad. And the iPad wouldn't need to be FULLY inside the circle of the light, only the camera lens part of the iPad would need to be inside the light circumference. // Also, if there are any other technical or product related questions, feel free to contact us directly at any time at [email protected]

Is this compatible with a Zhiyun-Tech Smooth-4 Smartphone Gimbal?
Asked by: Amelia
I mean technically yes it could work. You would just have to attach a shoe mount to the bottom of the gimbal so it would fit on the ringlight. And considering the gimbal sits about 12 inches high, and your ringlight is 19 inches the potential setup isn't ideal. You generally would like the camera to sit roughly in the center of the ringlight.
