WD Desktop External HDD Reviews
Large Capacity and Easily Used
I kept running out of space on my smaller 1Tb drive and needed to upgrade. I could have done with smaller capacity but for the price, how could I pass up a 14Tb drive?!? The drive work without any special configuration to me Windows laptop. It doesn't operate at blinding speed but, since this is just used to backup my systems weekly, I don't need high speed as much as I need capacity and reliability.
Good Product.
Good Product with this price. But more Noises are getting from hard drive. Thanks.
Reliable Storage
I've been using WD Elements for backup of old project files for years now. This was my 5th Elements HD purchase. The combination of reliability and price really can't be beat. The speed on the drives is definitely too slow for large raw files, but it is possible to use these drives for editing with smaller files or with the help of proxies.
Clunks every 5 seconds. Guaranteed to drive you crazy!!!
I initially thought this drive was defective, but after checking with Western Digital, it appears the design geniuses there thought it would be a good idea to flutter the disk head every 5 seconds. Not every minute. Not every hour. EVERY 5 SECONDS! I guarantee you, IT WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!!! I've been told there is no way to alter this setting. Presumably this is to increase the life of the drive. The funny thing is that I have several WD external drives that I have been using for almost 20 years, that do not have this annoying feature, and they continue to work just fine. While the drive functions properly today, the frequent chattering, causing unnecessary wear and tear, makes me doubt the long term reliability of this drive, as well as WD's disregard for customer real-world use and satisfaction. I wish I would have know about this beforehand so I could have avoided the purchase.
Hard to set up, but worth the time
WD did not provide proper support to get this to work with my Mac, but B&H handled that in less than 30 seconds! Huge amount of storage and very quiet, unlike my other external hard drive (which is why I bought this one ... hard to teach workshops online when you keep hearing an external hard drive making sounds). Relieved to replace the Seagate with this WD hard drive.
Fast External Back-Up Storage
The Western Digital Elements 8TB provides plenty of space for backing up all of your computer files. The transfer rate is typically 170-180 Mb/s which is very fast making transferring files to the drive a quick task! The drive runs cool to the touch even after running overnight transferring several TB of data.
Great price for large storage.
Great price for PS4/PS5 storage.
Crashed just after warranty expired
Like most of my WD drives, this one has also decided to crash just a few months after the warranty expired. I tried reaching out to WD but since it's expired, they're not willing to learn more about my issue. The reviews were great which is why I decided to go with another WD but I'm going to go back to Lacie for my external back-up needs.
