800MB/S WITH 4 X 10TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF, RAID 0

EASY SET UP for first time RAIDer in me. Macbook 2018 13 connected to Akitio Quadx. Macbook is also connected to eGPU Razer Core X + vega 64 which is connected to an external monitor via Display Port. Didnt know Hard drives on RAID 0 CAN SURPASS my External SSDs (About 500MB/S).  Make sure you have backup. Total of 40TB. Planning to use this as second time machine, 4k and above editing, and carbon copy cloner of my other drives. THIS IS THE CHEAPEST Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure with trusted review I found so far. Including shipping and taxes, this amounts to $45 per TB. This is day 1. So far the not so great is a rhythmic, spinning sound when it is writing. Its not annoying and not a deal-breaker.

JBOD, mix of SSD and HDD, plus display passthru

I wasn't interested in RAID, so I'm just using it for 3 HDD and 1 SSD. I also pass through an external 4K display. Works great, doesn't add any more noise than the sound of the HDD (which is by far the loudest thing in my office, maybe because this is acoustically coupled to my large desktop.) In a perfect world, this would be quieter. The included thunderbolt to USB cable is short, so there wasn't the option of putting it on the floor, but I think I'm going to try that out fairly soon. Overall, functions as advertised. I've been using this for several months and I do hammer this enclosure, as it is the time machine backup target for 2 laptops and another desktop.

Beautifully crafted premium-looking JBOD

The Quad X is a well designed JBOD with a simple installation. Aesthetically it matches well with the iMac Pro. With 4x 8TB Toshiba disks, I"m getting ~840MB/s writes and 804MB/s reads (RAID 0). There's sufficient airflow to cool hot disks however noisy disks aren't as isolated as a side effect.

Easy setup, works like it should

Installed four freshly shucked 10 TB WD Whites in the box, set them up in RAID 1+0 and everything works like a charm.  Whole process took less than a half hour.  5400 RPM is a slight bottleneck (no fault of the enclosure) but they were half price of the 7200 RPM.  Data transfer is similar to an older SSD, much faster than a normal external drive.  Very little fan noise.

Good enough for 4K and HD video work

I put four WD Gold 6TB drives into this enclosure in RAID 0 mode and then copied a 20GB video project back and forth to the M.2 bus SSD on my 14-core Intel i9 Windows 10 system. It showed sustained reads at 800 MB/s and sustained writes at 500 MB/s. That’s good enough for my video work. Not as fast as the promise of the G-Speed array, but at $1300 saved about $700 in cost vs the G-Speed.  Also tested it with my late 2012 Macbook Pro Thunderbolt 1 connection through an Apple TB1/TB3 converter and got about 180 MB/s sustained performance both read and write. Again, using 20GB collection of MP4 videos and .ISO files.

Works great

Works great, very silent, even with the fan on. 2 reasons for giving only 4 stars: - I wish it would be faster to remove a disk and insert another one... not really a hot swapable enclosure, think more about installing permanently 4 big hard drives. - I also wish there was an on/off switch for each drive, instead of having all drives connected to the computer everytime I turn the enclosure on But despite these minor details, works great so far!!

Ease installation for iMac Pro - no manual required but you need to have a screw driver handy Fast access time - with 4 X HGST 6TB NAS HDD, almost 900mb/s - Tested by Blackmagic Disk Speed Test Budget friendly - Can't find any similar price RAID array with thunderbolt 3 in this price range Good interface - additional thunderbolt and dp port Nice looking case If the power switch located in the side panel, I will be more than happy to see that. (My G-Technolgy is doing the same). I put the back panel towards me for easy access to the power switch to me - a nice case looks ugly.

question

Can I connect and edit on two computers simultaneously using both of the thunderbolt 3 connections?
Asked by: David P.
Your question isn't showing in the QA list yet, so I can't edit my previous answer. I should point out, that since this is just a JBOD, you could, for example, mount two drives on one mac, and two on the other. I've never tested to see if that would work, but I think it will. If I can find a TB3 to TB1 adaptor, I'll give it a go tonight.

question

Could you have have two ssd drives in raid 0 (for speed) and then two hdd drives in raid 1 (for mass storage) at the same time with this device?
Asked by: Colin W.
The disks installed in this Quad X will be seen as independent drives in MacOS or Windows. Each disks can be selected to join to a RAID storage space. Definitely you can configure two of the disks in RAID 0 and another two in RAID 1.

question

Will this power a macbook pro?
Asked by: Audra
This product provide PD 27W power to both of the Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you are using 13 MBP, the 27W power may be able to charge your MBP at the same time when you access this storage device. If your MBP is 15 , the 27W power may only be barely enough to maintain the battery level.
