    Tenba Solstice 20L reviews

Solstice 20L Camera Backpack (Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect daypack for two cameras from city to safari I needed an all-day bag to hold two mirrorless camera bodies (one with a Fuji 100-400mm attached) for an upcoming 2-week safari in East Africa. My criteria was: - At least 2 points of access, one of which could accommodate my X-T2 with 100-400mm plus hood attached, and the other with my X-E2 with 18-55mm (rear entry preferred) - Interior layout that could accommodate the two cameras plus a couple lenses - Comfortable, ergonomic, with waist straps ideal for trekking/all-day carry in city or nature - Some room to hold extra stuff I was comparing this with the Mindshift Backlight, Lowepro Protactic 350AW and Vanguard Alta Sky in-store. The Mindshift definitely had superior build quality (beefier zippers, waist straps, etc) but only had rear access. The Protactic 350AW did not have the best shoulder/waist straps, and I questioned how easily the 100-400mm would have fit (with hood) inside without going up to the gigantic 450AW. The Vanguard was extremely nice and had multiple access points but was bulky, heavy, and significantly more expensive (had to buy in Asia). When I walked out the door with the Tenba, I honestly wasn't thrilled with my choice as I wanted the build quality of the Mindshift with rear access and some of the features of the Vanguard. However, after using the Tenba extensively on the road, its simplicity and understated design has served me perfectly. - The ability to quickly take out my 100-400mm camera from the top as opposed to only the rear is a huge plus. The interior pockets are arranged such that the lens goes down the right compartment, and the left compartment contains my second camera plus a 12mm lens. - Secondly, the rear flap has a crease in the design that allows you to open it halfway, which could allow you to take out your second camera quickly. I didn't have mine configured this way (my camera was towards the bottom left and the lens at the top left), but I'll be trying this out on my next trip. - The two side pockets are very accommodating and can be tightened with the straps as needed - The rear entry is a nice feature although takes getting used to putting the front down in a dusty safari vehicle. The main advantage for rear access honestly was theft. I didn't realize how important this was until I started walking the streets of Nairobi. - Both blue and black look great. I went with the black as it was a bit more versatile in the city. - While I could have went up to the 24L, the 20L is definitely the more "daypack" of the two. It fits my camera gear fine, although not much room for anything else when carrying the 100-400mm which takes up half the space. I also wanted to avoid carrying too much load in a single pack, which I often do with my 50L packs. - Pack is comfortable to carry for long periods of time, which might be attributed to the fact it's limited to 20L. One concern I had was storing my 100-400mm vertically and putting stress on the hood/threads/lens mount. What I did was place one of the dividers about 3/4 of the way down in the compartment such that the lens collar would hook onto the divider and the camera would almost be suspended via the lens collar. I would place the divider down far enough so that the lens hood might barely touch the bottom of the bag. What I wish could be better: - It would be nice to have a tripod holder or extra straps (such as on the Vanguard Alta Sky) on the center-back instead of one either side of the pack. The back face seems like it's a slight waste of space as Tenba could have added something here with a little more utility, although we have the option of using the side straps and fastening something like a coat to the back - More interior pockets. The Solstice 20L has a mesh pocket on the inside of the top compartment which holds all my batteries and arca-swiss adapters. Halfway down the bag there is another small dual-pocket. Would have definitely been more useful if Tenba included more built-in pockets such as on the inside of the rear-flap (like on the Incase Pro) to organize more items - The front pocket is limited to small items. Wish it could overall be slightly bigger/expandable to hold other items, such as the large front pocket in the Mindshift which can hold clothes, etc. That would allow this to double as a more effective weekend bag as opposed to strictly camera gear. - Rain cover, while it worked well, could instead be placed at the bottom of the pack instead of using up space at the top compartment (very minor complaint) - Build quality is good but not as good as the Mindshift. While the zippers are quality, they seem tiny compared to the Mindshift. I'd also put a bit of money into thickly padded waist straps and possibly put a pocket or two on them as well.
