Blackmagic Design CONVMBHS Overview

The Blackmagic Design HDMI to SDI 6G Mini Converter converts HDMI to SD, HD, 3G, or 6G-SDI in resolutions up to DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24p and UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) up to 30p. This is useful for connecting consumer devices that output HDMI signals with professional SDI video equipment. With a compact form factor and easy-to-use controls, the Mini Converter is ideal for a variety of broadcast, post-production, and professional AV applications.

Using 4K HDMI and 6G-SDI technologies, the Mini Converter automatically detects the input video format and instantly changes between SD, HD, and UHD/DCI 4K formats. The two 6G-SDI outputs also support SD and HD-SDI signals for integration into existing workflows. Both 6G-SDI outputs send duplicate signals. Audio is embedded in the SDI output from either the HDMI input or from the two 1/4" input jacks which support four channels of AES/EBU digital audio or two channels of analog audio.

The Mini Converter's settings are controlled using the built-in switches or via USB using the control software for Max OS X or Windows computers, which can be downloaded on Blackmagic Design's website. The USB port also enables the firmware to be updated.
The device is powered by an included 12V power supply and includes international socket adapters.

Great unit. Probably thirty hours on unit. Ran 100 feet of cable outside, into a coupler, and then another 100 feet of cable inside to end point BMD 6G-SDI to HDMI 4K unit. It was raining that day and in the 40s outside. I could not see any degradation in the audio or video. Never lost signal even for a second. I was sending hdmi video and analog audio over 3G-SDI cable. Number 1 & 8 are up. Numbers 2-7 are down. This was my first experience with SDI & BMD equipment. Note; For this unit, ON is down, Off is up.

Although the device did not work for my system it seems to be made very well. The one thing that I didn't understand was that right out of the box when it didn't work was that the factory rep told me to update the software on the unit. I was on site of an installation and had no way of accomplishing this.

Can I use this converter with the HDMI connection of my Macbook Pro? Will I be limited to mirroring my own display or can I use that converter to stream a second SDI monitor?

This will not work on Macbooks if you are going to a drop frame format. 23.976, 29.97, or 59.94. Macbooks can only output 24, 30, and 60 and since this unit doesn't convert it wont work with those formats.

I am wanting to connect a 2013 iMac to a ATEM ...

I am wanting to connect a 2013 iMac to a ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K. Would this Converter work if I used Mini DisplayPort to HDMI from the iMac, to the HDMI in on this Converter, and then passed SDI to the Switcher?

Hi, I don't have the switcher, but I do have the Blackmagic HDMI-SDI 6g, and an atomos shogun inferno, and a 2012 MacMini. I was able to see output from the Mac Mini at 1080p, but did not see any choices for higher resolution. I'm not sure that you can even pass 4:2:0 2160 signal at 30fps over a 3g input Blackmagic does make an admittedly more expensive HDMI - SDI convert to pass full UHD, BH #BLTRMHDMISDI • MFR #CONVNTRM/AB/HSDI (the Blackmagic Design Teranex Mini HDMI to SDI 12G Converter). I'm not a B&H employee, but they have a very reasonable return policy; you could ask if they wuold let you try the cheaper one, and if it didn't work, exchange it with more $$ for the faster one.
