Dracast Silkray 800 overview

  • 1Description

The Silkray 800 Bi-Color LED Panel Light from Dracast is a 23 x 15 x 0.6" aluminum-framed fixture that weighs 3 lb and features variable 3200-5600K color temperature to match other fixtures, ambient light conditions or just to light creatively without resorting to filters. Brightness is also adjustable from 0-100% and both settings are displayed on the panel's digital readout. The Silkray's LEDs have a high CRI of 96+ for color accuracy, and they draw very little current while outputting many times that number in tungsten fixture equivalence for a rapid return on your investment. Running barely warm to the touch, you can bring the light very close to the talent without discomfort and danger, and, at only a little over 1/2" thick, it can be placed in tight situations where legacy fixtures just can't go.

The Silkray 800 ships with a 100-240 VAC power adapter for worldwide use, but it can also run on V-Mount batteries thanks to the battery plate on the back of the fixture. A carry bag is also included.

    Dracast Silkray 800 reviews

Silkray 800 Bi-Color LED Panel Light is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from lots of soft bi-color light in a compact form factor I wasn't too sure how bright this would be considering it's bi-color and draws only 80 watts of power, but wow, this light is bright and very versatile. The light has a wide spread and is very soft - no grid pattern shadows. Been getting a lot of use out of it. Only gripe is the power cable between the light and the transformer is a bit on the thin side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from dracast 800 absolutely perfect source for dslr video. Soft clean ,minimal power draw and very light weight ... not much need for a diffusion or modifier . Produces a very even highlight on glass and reflective objects...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overall for it's purpose. Dracast Silkray 800 bi-color LED panel. I compared this to the Fotodiox C-700RSV FlapJack. The Dracast light had a little truer color at 3200K, though less output at 3200K and 5600K. However it had about an f-stop more output than the Fotodiox at 4400K because the Dracast got brighter in mid color temps, while the Fotodiox stayed the same brightness through the range. I opted to go with the Fotodiox because it was a little lighter weight. and had more output at the main color temps--and also dimmed much lower before switching off altogether. But the Dracast has: a better power supply cable that actually reaches the floor so the power supply does not have to dangle; a little better color rendition; the rectangular shape may suit some applications better--plus better price--may-be slightly better build quality, especially for peripherals like the power supply & cables. At 800ASA @ 6 feet, it puts out just over 2.8 stop at both 3200K and 5600K. I think it was about an f4.5 at 4400k. At time of this review the specs somewhat misleadingly say the panel is 15" by 23"--but this includes the yoke and reciever--the panel itself is closer to 12" x 21"--and deduct another inch for the actual white surface inside the black frame. While I have to say this is a very good quality light, it wasn't the perfect fit for my super quick one-man band interview key-light. It's sort of an in-between light, not big enough for a super soft big key (though very nice soft light for it's size), a little heavyish (around 9 pounds), but it's compact handy soft case makes it quite transportable. (My Fotodiox flapjack's case is actually a lot bulkier, but is more firmly padded and protective.) This Dracast has better than average build quality and color rendition, not a lot of throw, but good soft light for fill or for use close to subject. I thought I would prefer the round reflections (i.e. in eyeglasses) of the my Fotodiox, but I will say the rectangular light when reflected may be more believable as possibly coming from a window. This is a well made product that may suffer from a bit from not quite fitting a popular niche for either ultralight versatility, or the advantages of a punchier light. But may-me the right compromise for some.
