Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity also enables wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor & Leica Maestro II Processor

At the heart of the camera system is a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which is paired with Leica's Maestro II processor to produce high-resolution, clear stills with native sensitivities ranging from ISO 100-50000 along with a top continuous shooting rate of 10 fps for up to 33 DNG+JPEGs or 140 JPEGs. A mechanical shutter affords precise speeds up to 1/8000 sec, and flash sync to 1/180 sec, while a silent electronic shutter can be used to reach a top speed of 1/25000 sec.

The sensor and processor also enable UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps for ultra-high resolution playback, along with support for Full HD at 60 fps and HD at 30 fps. Focus peaking is available as well to help ensure your videos are in focus.

49-Point Contrast-Detection AF System

Ensuring you are capturing tack-sharp photos at all times is an upgraded contrast-detect AF system with 49 selectable points available. The focusing system offers fast and accurate performance in a variety of lighting and shooting conditions.

Body Design

  • Two dials with center buttons are featured on the top plate for easy settings adjustment and four-way rear directional pad can be used for intuitive selecting of focus points.

Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity

Integrated IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly connect iOS and Android devices to the CL for sharing photos and movies to smartphones or tablets for posting online. The free Leica App facilitates sharing imagery between the camera and device, and the app also enables a remote function for wirelessly adjusting the camera's shutter speed, aperture, and for releasing the shutter. The app can also be used as a remote electronic viewfinder to benefit composing self-portraits or group shots, or when working from difficult shooting angles.

Leica L-Bayonet Mount

Leica's mirrorless L-bayonet mount offers users the ability to connect both full-frame SL-series and APS-C TL-series glass, which benefits from electronic communication for blazing fast autofocus, electronic aperture control, and optical image stabilization. Additionally, as with most mirrorless today, the L mount can accept a variety of adapters, such as the M-Adapter L which provides shooters with access to the entire M-mount lens library. Leica will have adapters for the S, R, and Cine series as well, ensuring compatibility with a range of Leica's best lenses.

Leica CL Reviews

An amazing little camera

By Robert

Let me start by saying that I own and love a Leica SL and a Q, so I am accustomed to using Leica FF cameras with some of the best lenses in the world. But the SL is rather large and heavy to schlepp around all day, and the Q is limited to a single focal length. Hence, I was looking for something smaller than the SL and more versatile than the Q. After reading many glowing user reviews of the CL, I took the plunge and got one along with a Summicron-TL 23 f2 and a Summilux-TL 35 f1.4. Am I happy with my choice? You bet I am. The CL is surprisingly small, yet solid and well constructed. Controls are simple and straightforward. AF is quick, though not as quick as some other speed demon cameras. Most importantly, the IQ is terrific, really not far below the SL and the Q, which was a big surprise to me, considering the smaller sensor. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 3200 and easy to reduce in post up to ISO 6400 (I havent gone higher). I have complete confidence that the CL can deliver beautiful images under almost all circumstances that I am likely to encounter, and such confidence, I believe, makes one a better photographer. Will the CL become my main camera? For travel, almost certainly. For everything else, only time will tell.

Perfect

I was concerned going back to crop sensor would decrease quality of my pictures. This camera is phenomenal and outperforms most full frame cameras! I don't regret buying this camera whatsoever. It's light and powerful!

MY SECOND CL

I bought my first CL as the kit with the 18-56mm zoom earlier this year. I've used the range finder cameras since the early 80's. At this point of my life I like the convenience of autofocus and zoom lenses. I like everything about this camera. It is light and compact. It has a horizon line in the view finder that makes alignment easy. The menus are easy to understand and set up. Most of my photography is travel photography. It is easy to work quickly with the camera. I've had no problem with the 2 setting wheels on the top of the camera. It takes a little while to remember what does what, but the more you use the camera, the easier it gets. I have found that the image quality is very close to what I have gotten with my M series rangefinder lenses. I also have the 35f1.4 and 55 to 135 zoom. Although I still carry the rangefinder cameras, I can carry these 2 cameras and cover an equivalent of 27 to 200mm working very quickly.

The CL delivers the quality of Leica in a small camera that I can take everywhere. It's small and unobtrusive...the perfect solution. I love that it can also take M lenses.

This is a great camera for traveling. The good feel and the light weight it's great for hiking around. The lens is great, I use a 50 mm summilux F1.4 this is my new go to camera.

A Fun Camera with Some Flaws

Lets start by acknowledging just how fun this little camera can be. You can customize the controls and have full power over the exposure triangle without moving your eye from the viewfinder. The Leica images are vivid and mostly sharp. It returns the fun to taking pictures, particularly if you are like me and used to lugging around pounds of Canon gear all day. What a joy to just have this little creative tool. But there is a price, and I dont just mean the high price of this somewhat aging technology. By being minimalist, the camera denies you the ability to back button focus. Instead you must maintain pressure on the shutter button so as not to lose focus, while you manipulate exposure compensation and try to fine tune the focus manually. If you are in autofocus, you give up magnification as you turn the focus right to fine tune the focus. You can not lock exposure independently of the focus point. In short, you lose a great deal of creative control, unless you go to manual mode and manual focus. That is a shame. The simplification of ISO control comes at the price of having to take huge jumps in settings rather than having a more incremental increase in the ISO setting. Battery life is all too short. I have gone to 4 batteries to make sure I dont run out. I am concerned about having enough time to charge them all each evening considering how slow the charger works. I know that sounds like a lot of negatives. I only wish Leica would read this and make a Leica CL 2 (or a more professional model). But, the bottom line is that I decided to keep the camera and I smile every day that I go out and shoot with it. As Hugh Brownstone would say, It makes me happy. If you dont know who he is, go to his web site at 3 blindmen and an elephant and watch his youtube review of this camera.

Nice little Leica

The image quality is superb, easy to use, and lots of flexibility with adaptors for the interchangeable lenses.  Manual focus with peak focusing is excellent, great for night time shooting when hard to autofocus.   The only complaint I have is the inability to manually select focus points, which seems to be a common complaint among the owners.  Hopefully future firmware will provide this flexibility.

I believe it was introduced in the late Fall of 2018. I first handled one at the Leica store in Kyoto in Spring 2019. I closed my eyes, picked it up, and I knew it was for me. It's the feel, you see. Quality is a given with Leica.

Both wi-fi and blue tooth are fine and are just as easy to use. But personally I find wi-fi to be more stable.

question

How bright is VF in bright sun? I ask since my Fuji XE-2 VF is very dim in bright sun
Asked by: Dennis
The VF is bright enough to be useable on a bright day. The screen, however, is a little dimmer, which ends up not being an issue because I always use the VF

question

How bright is EVF in bright sun? I ask since my Fuji XE-2 VF is very dim in bright sun.
Asked by: Dennis
There are no issues in utilizing this camera in bright sunlight with the view finder. In fact if you want to change settings, you'll want to use the view finder as the preview/menu settings as the screen is difficult to see in bright sun.
