Comprising the essentials needed to begin shooting, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III Digital Camera with Accessories Kit from B&H bundles the advanced compact camera with a memory card and a protective camera pouch.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III Digital Camera

Raising the imaging bar for Canon's series of advanced compact cameras once again, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III is distinguished by its larger sensor and versatile all-around imaging capabilities. A first for a PowerShot, the G1 X Mark III sports a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 7 processor to realize notable image clarity, a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600, an impressive continuous shooting rate up to 9 fps, and Full HD 1080p/60 video recording. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which offers quick and accurate phase-detection autofocus that benefits both stills and video applications. Balancing the improved sensor design is a versatile 3x zoom lens, which covers a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range to suit working in a variety of situations. An Optical Image Stabilizer is also featured, to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.

In addition to the updated sensor and processor capabilities, the G1 X Mark III also features a refined physical design complete with a built-in 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.0" vari-angle touchscreen for easier, more intuitive control. Dedicated dials about the camera body afford direct adjustment of shooting settings and modes, and both a pop-up flash and a hot shoe are available. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth connectivity enable wireless pairing with a mobile device for remote live view shooting and image transferring.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 7 fps continuous shooting rate, which can be quickened to 9 fps with AF lock, for photographing fast-moving subjects. Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to a 60-fps frame rate.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
3x Optical Zoom Lens and Image Stabilizer
A built-in 3x zoom lens offers a versatile 24-72mm equivalent focal length range, covering a wide-angle to portrait-length reach. This f/2.8-5.6 lens also incorporates a Dual Sensing Optical Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops for sharper handheld shooting.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
  • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, clear eye-level means for composing imagery.
  • Rear 3.0" touchscreen is also available for intuitive playback, menu navigation, and live view shooting, and its vari-angle design benefits working from high and low angles.
  • When working with the electronic viewfinder, Touch and Drag AF lets you manually move the AF point selection using the rear touchscreen while keeping your eye to the finder.
  • Physical controls allow for intuitive settings adjustments, and include a front dial, an exposure compensation dial, and a top mode dial, as well as dedicated rear buttons and dials.
  • Built-in pop-up flash can be used for additional illumination and a hot shoe is also featured for working with an optional external flash or other shoe-mounted accessory.
  • The body has a dust- and moisture-resistant physical design to permit its use in trying environmental conditions.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.

Canon G1 X Mark III Reviews

A 15 oz Jewell

By Jeffrey
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2022-01-16

I've been using this camera for travel since 2018 and recently bought a second one when the Canon refurb prices came down below the cost of the Canon underwater housing I have for it. This camera is a 15 oz jewell, the 1D of compacts. Same full APS-C DPAF sensor as the 80D. It has a 15-45 (24-70 FF equivalent) Its f2.8-5.6 lens is sharper in my testing than any of the APS-C kit lenses including the 15-85, and even the EF-M 11-22 where they overlap. Only my 16-35 f4 L on the 80D is sharper in the corners. Both my cameras test this sharp. It has the same EVF as the RP or M6II. I was fiddling with a wrist strap when I first got it and dropped it (turned off) from chest height onto a linoleum floor. The camera is still going strong and the wrist strap is rotting in a drawer somewhere. Its sharp 24mm equiv f2.8 end is fast enough for night sky work and its still f4 at 35mm equivalent making it good for interior group pictures. It takes 37mm filters including the nice range of B&W diopters for close-up photos. It weighs 1.06 lbs in its OpTech pouch with a small pouch for extra filters. Its not pocketable but disappears over your shoulder or fits in a nice belt pouch on my day pack. Weather sealed with in-body charging from a regular USB port. It has a wonderful in-camera panning panorama builder like many cell phones. I shoot raw and process in Lightroom and the images are equally lovely next to those I take with my 5D4 and f4 L lenses. The only thing this camera can't do is 4K video or longer than 70mm. I pair it with my M6II + 55-250 for a 3 lbs 24-400 hiking kit. Or I freely use it when I have a 100-400 or wide or macro on my DSLR. Or street use when visiting foreign cities or just out at night. Its always with me when traveling.

First Canon for me in a while but this one is a winner. Satisfied with all features except macro but can get by just zooming in. Images are very sharp, auto focus is excellent, and sensor range is great too.

About the highest performing pocket point and shoot I know

By John

I have used the high end Canon P&S cameras to photograph mechanical issues on cars for almost 20 years, and I've had about every model. My previous camera was the G7X version introduced in 2017. That was very good but it fell down in shadow detail. When photographing under the hood of a car, or under the car, you have to rely or flash or some kind of shop light. There are always harsh shadows and I often need to bring shadow detail way up, and in that situation the G7X would have a lot of noise. When we needed a new camera for one of the g7X models - kind of knocked to pieces - I asked B&H for a recommendation and got the latest incarnation of the G1X. I had the original G1 many years ago but this is a totally different and better piece. Compared to the G7X the bigger sensor gives far better shadow detail, and in addition the photos can be blown up more to see details you would not see otherwise. We routinely blow these shots up far beyond life size to see failure points in mechanical pieces, and the camera really delivers for that. The biggest minus is poor battery life. The G7x is bad and this camera is worse. However using it in a shop we just keep a battery in the wall charger and swap out as needed. For me it's not an issue but for someone walking round and photographing outside that might be a concern. However you really have to decide what you want, image quality, size, etc. If you want a really high quality image from a truly pocket size package this camera is hard to beat, and a couple extra batteries won't take much pocket space.   I have a Fuji Xpro3 which I see as a next step up from this, but it's 2-3x the price and bigger and heavier. I carry the Fuji outside of work for landscapes etc because it it more versatile but if I really want a pocket camera this is the one Another thing that sets this camera apart in the P&S world is that you can mount screw on filters, and the 37mm size is smaller that what goes on the bigger cameras so they are comparatively cheap. My other Canon P&S cameras have had lens shutters built in; this camera has a cap. I have a clear filter on mine which makes the cap less critical; popping it off and on is a nuisance Overall, if your photography demands fine detail and a lot of dynamic range in a small easy to use package this is a great camera. If those things are less important they G7X we also use is perhaps a better choice because it folds up smaller, has a lens cover, and handles a bit better. Both are good, but for my needs this is a distinct step up. The photo I've attached shows where this camera excels. What you see is gasoline leaking from the fuel tank outlet of a Ferrari 412. Not the most interesting subject for some, but a real technical challenge to capture because everything in the image is dark, and the subject of the photo is way forward in a dark trunk. This was developed in Lightroom with 2.4 stops extra exposure, highlights -80, shadows +90 and you can see the leaking fuel clearly along with all the mechanical details.

An excellent pocket camera giving high resolution images

Our previous PowerShot camera was convenient but had a terrible optical view finder. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III makes high resolution images on an APS-C sensor and has an excellent high resolution EVF to aid in framing images.

Great camera

I ordered this camera after my Nikon died. While the Nikon was off to be repaired, I wanted a camera that would shoot RAW and be able to handle detail. With its 24 mb sensor (the same size as in my big Nikon) this camera met all my requirements. The images are crisp and sharp and working in RAW is great. Controls are well located though, as others have commented, this is a small camera and the controls may not work for someone with big hands. While I didn't think I would appreciate the weight of this camera, frankly it's kind of nice not having all the weight of the Nikon around my neck. Two notes, however, the case in the deluxe kit really doesn't fit the camera once you put a sun shade on it and the battery is not a Canon branded battery; so far it has not demonstrated the life of the branded battery.

Is this camera compatible with a Canon remote?
Asked by: Sean
According to the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III Digital Camera's instruction manual, there are three options for controlling the camera remotely. According to page 165 of the manual, you may use a smartphone or tablet as a wireless remote control after downloading the Canon Camera Connect app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store on your smartphone/tablet (instructions are listed on pages 146-147). If you want a cable remote, page 186 lists two options; you may either purchase the Canon RS-60E3 Remote Switch, B&H # CARS60E3, for direct usage with your camera, or you may purchase the Canon Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3, B&H # CATC80N3, along with the Canon RA-E3 Remote Controller Adapter, B&H # CARAE3, for use with your camera.
