Peavey Budda Chakra overview

  • 1Description

Designed for electric guitar players, the Budda Chakra Compressor from Peavey is a stompbox intended to emulate the optical circuits used for such tasks in the 1960s. Essentially, optical compressors use light-dependent resistors to dictate the level of gain reduction. As your signal grows louder, the light-emitting device inside an optical compressor grows brighter; its brightness, in turn, telling a light-dependent sensor how strongly it should clamp down on the level. Such compression is not linear and exact, but rather, smooth, musical, and often with a tone that can be described as fat or larger than life.

As this pedal mimics the characteristics of vintage optical compressors, you can use it subtly to obtain these tonal characteristics, or with a heavy hand, in order to squeeze your signal to utter evenness. Use the Gain knob to dictate how brightly the compression-triggering mechanism shines within the pedal.

This compressor sports an Attack control for dictating roughly when the compression effect will start, as well as a Compression knob that sets the overall ratio of compression. A Level knob is on hand to match a signal in volume to your clean tone or to offer a slight boost, should you need one. The pedal employs true bypass circuitry to preserve the integrity of your tone when the stompbox is in its disengaged state. The Chakra itself utilizes a heavy-duty, die-cast housing, providing a 9V battery compartment, as well as a jack for a 9 VDC adapter.

Controls at a Glance
Gain Knob: This controls how much light the light-dependent resistor will receive, or in other words, the strength of the resulting gain reduction

Compression Knob: This knob controls the amount of compression; in other words, it sets the ratio of the effect, with full counter-clockwise giving you a near 1.5:1 ratio, and clockwise providing 10:1 values

Attack Knob: This controls how quickly the compressor will kick into effect; it ranges from 5 to 150 ms

Level Knob: This is your output volume control, with 6 dB of gain available for boosting
