Profoto 500 overview

  • 1Description

B1 500 Air Battery-Powered 2-Light Location Kit from Profoto consists of two B1 500 off-camera, battery-powered AirTTL flash heads each with a battery, a 4.5A Fast Battery Charger, car charger and a custom location backpack. With the use of an optional Air Remote TTL-C, TTL-N, Air Remote or Air Sync users will have access to wireless triggering from distances up to 1,000'.

This versatile kit makes studio quality lighting as easy to use as your camera's TTL flash. The B1 offers double wireless freedom - a built in AirTTL receiver for remote triggering as well as a powerful on-board Lithium-ion battery that untethers you from the wall outlet. When you need to recharge, the included Fast Battery Charger lives up to its name by providing up to 220 500Ws flashes on a 60 minute charge while the car charger allows you to refresh the battery while you drive to your next shoot. The kit fits in an included ballistic nylon backpack which was tailored for it. Its interior features padded compartments and room for expendables and optional Profoto transmitters. Currently the B1 offers full TTL exposure plus remote triggering for Canon cameras via the optional Air Remote TTL-C and for Nikon cameras via the TTL-N. The B1 can also be triggered remotely with the Air Remote or Air Sync without TTL functionality.

The B1 recycles in 0.1 to 1.9 seconds but can deliver up to 20 flashes per second in Quick Burst Mode which engages at lower power settings. Flash duration in Normal Mode is a very fast 1/1,000 sec. but there's also a Freeze Mode that delivers flash durations a short as 1/19,000 sec. for capturing liquid sprays or splashes and other creative effects. The modeling light has been upgraded to LED to put less strain on the battery and provide the equivalent output of a 70W tungsten-halogen bulb. The B1's exchangeable Lithium-ion battery gets up to 220 flashes on a 2-hour charge with the standard 2.8A charger or a 1-hour charge with the 4.5A Fast Charger. The battery has fuel gauge-type LEDs that make monitoring remaining power easy.

Full E-TTL II with Canon Cameras or i-TTL with Nikon Cameras
The B1's patent-pending technology fully integrates the flash head with your Nikon or Canon camera. The integration is so complete that Profoto sometimes refers to the B1 as an "off-camera flash." The key to this control is the Air Remote TTL-C or TTL-N.
Optional Air Remote TTL-C / TTL-N
The Air Remote TTL-C and TTL-N transmitters have 8 frequency channels with 3 groups per channel and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops in TTL or +/- 9 stops in manual. Modeling light, shut-down of the unit and first or rear curtain exposure can also be selected.
Lithium-ion Battery Powered
The B1's Lithium-ion battery gives you up to 220 full power flashes and thousands of minimum power flashes on a 2-hour charge from the provided 2.8A multi-voltage charger. An optional 4.5A quick charger shortens that time to 1 hour. Fuel gauge type LEDs on both the battery and charger allow you to monitor remaining power.
Exceptionally Short Flash Duration
In Normal Mode, which prioritizes color fidelity, the B1 500 AirTTL is capable of t0.5 flash durations of 1/11,000 sec. at minimum power, and 1/1,000 sec. at full power.
Freeze Mode
Freeze Mode automatically selects the shortest flash duration possible at the user-selected power level. Motion-stopping flash durations of 1/19,000 at minimum power make the B1 500 AirTTL ideal for high speed shooting.
Quick Burst Mode
At lower power settings Quick Burst Mode allows a series of flashes to be fired at a faster pace than the B1 can recharge, allowing triggering of up to 20 frames per second.
LED Modeling Lamp
A 20W LED modeling light with a 70W tungsten-equivalent output draws very little power from the battery and generates minimal heat. The light can be set to proportional or full power and will dim during recycling if that option is selected.
Redesigned Control Panel
The B1's control panel has been upgraded with a 1.4 x 2.5" bright LCD screen that informs the user of the flash's Power level, sync choice, modeling light mode and recycle alert. There's also a large battery gauge that literally can be read from 20' away
Firmware Updates
Both the flash head and the Air Remote TTL-C have mini-USB connections for firmware updates directly from Profoto's website.
Power Variable over 9 Stops
Power can be regulated over a 9-stop range (2 to 500Ws / 1/256 to 1/1) in 1/10 or 1-stop increments.
Full Light Shaper System Compatibility
With its zoom scale and integrated umbrella sleeve, the B1 500 AirTTL is compatible with Profoto's extensive line of umbrellas, reflectors and softboxes.

Profoto 500 reviews

B1 500 Air Battery-Powered 2-Light Location Kit is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel/location kit Great quality product, as with all Profoto products. Works with all my existing Profoto modifiers and speedrings, solid build, easy to operate, great battery life so far. At only 500 watts there are obvious limitations, although I haven't tested out the high-speed sync feature. While portable, these are very heavy lights; I'm nervous putting them on lightweight travel stands and prefer to use them on c-stands, and make sure I weigh the bases down sufficiently. Backpack is the perfect size for the lights, batteries, chargers, and a few small additional items, seems very well constructed. Used this kit for a couple of weeks now on smaller editorial shoots and very pleased so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Profoto B1 Location Kit!! I bought this location kit after purchasing the single light unit..I loaded the latest update for the these two B1 units an also loaded the HSS (high speed sync) code on the Air Remote TTL-C..this is ultimately the best investment I have ever made. I'm not one to make a big deal about light units, or think there is optimally one brand superior than the rest, but Profoto is doing it right!! I will be very honest buy saying that if you can afford this kit don't will not be disappointed. You should also purchase the Air Remote with these units...if not, you will not be able to use all the functions on the B1's

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the monolights your looking for! There isn't much I can add that hasn't been said about the Profoto B1's before. They are wonderful if you can swallow the initial cost. You are paying for portability, reliability and consistency. This bundle provides a nice on the go location kit. Two different kinds of chargers - one of which is a car charger. The backpack itself is made by Tenba and is very well made, comfortable and protects your investment well. Head over to Profoto's YouTube channel for some insane Webinars and marketing videos. Stop trying to convince yourself - buy them! I can't seeing many who get hands on with these looking back and thinking they were a bad purchase....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In Love with Light Coming from the days of Speedotrons, these lights are nearly idiot proof. The increments of power adjustments can be in full stops or smaller increments. There are obviously no power cords, power packs, or a real threat of being electrocuted. I found this system can literally be plugged in and used with only a glance of the manual. This isn't to say this system isn't sophisticated. There are manual controls, which I use, but the TTL is useful when one wants assistance with the exposure. All in all, they are a powerful light with portability like no other! I would recommend for indoor studio use and outdoor sessions. Also, I live in a tiny studio and these can pack away in a backpack for storage! Talk about convenience!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Valuable Investment Having been a professional photographer for over 50 years (I did start at age 16 however), these lights are the most innovative and significant piece of equipment I've purchased. The ability to remotely control them with the dedicated air remote and adjust them from the camera is unbelievable. Having 500 watt seconds available plus all the modifier accessories make this a must have for the serious photographer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love these lights, but... Can't wait to use these on location. In testing they perform well and are very easy to use. Light quality is wonderful. My only complaint, and at this price point I consider it serious, is that the OCF grids and gels do not fit my heads; they are way too tight, and I haven't figured out how I'm going to make them work. Also, the speed rings feel tight, though usable, but don't slide on the head as I feel they should. With my B1 kit I purchased 2 gel kits and 1 grid kit, none of which will go on either head without significant wrestling, twisting, and swearing. I give it 3 stars only because I'll probably have to tape my grids/gels on, and though the heads themselves are wonderful, at this price point a customer deserves equipment and accessories that function seamlessly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lights for a location photographer Currently I do a lot of adventure and outdoor photography and these lights perform amazing. A lot of the locations I end up at are remote and in the backcountry far from any power source and these lights are true workhorses. Lugged them up into a ravine with temps hovering around 15 with 30mph+ winds. The high speed sync works seamless with the firmware updates syncing up to 8,000th of second! The only drawbacks I have found are you can't plug the batteries to trickle charge while shooting but with an hour charge time and an extra set of batteries you are pretty much covered. The other thing I was surprised by was the High Speed Sync is only limited to a 2 stop range, but it is understandable that they are using a much faster flash duration. This is finally the perfect lights I have been waiting for!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Location Lighting Kit! I'm a professional fine art photographer and I love to turn remote locations into sets. This takes powerful portable strobes and the B1s are the kit to use. On a recent two week journey around the Irish coast I was able to overpower the sun to do day for night as well as light in complex situations from a long distance. In some instances I was actually hand holding the light because there was no place for a stand and firing the camera remotely! The incorporation of a quality battery right into the light really increases the flexibility of these strobes. I dig the back pack though it had be hard to carry in your hand (ie not on your back) if you already have a camera bag there. For longer hikes I would pull a light out and created a blended kit of camera plus single light that I could fit on my back. These aren't cheap but they're the best location lights out there.
