Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Overview

Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens

Super-Telephoto Versatility

Targeting sports, wildlife, and action shooters, this FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy many photographers and videographers who are looking for a bit of extra reach with their full-frame E-mount camera. As a member of the G Master line, it is designed with outstanding resolution and sharpness in mind, along with a relatively compact size, responsive autofocus, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for outstanding performance at all focal lengths.

G Master Optics

Characteristic of the G Master line, this telephoto zoom offers excellent optical performance with both high sharpness and smooth bokeh.

  • Two extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • Nano AR Coating reduces surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Far-reaching telephoto zoom sports a f/4.5-5.6 maximum aperture range that is an ideal compromise resulting in a lightweight, compact design and bright enough performance for working in available lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF (DDSSM) and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 3.2' minimum focusing distance with 0.35x magnification.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.

Durable Design and Intuitive Handling

  • Zoom torque adjustment ring will help provide users with added control over the zoom function of the lens.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Compatible with FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for reaching focal lengths up to 800mm.

Chiaro Pro 77mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 77mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission

Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.

Resistance Coating

The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.

Polished Optical Glass

Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.

Multi-Coating

Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.

UV Protection

The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.

Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction

The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.

Slim Design

Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.

Top and Side Knurling

In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.

Secure Attachment

It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.

Front Threads

The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Reviews

It's a great lens you won't be disappointed

This is a great lens and did what I expected on my African safari. For two weeks we photographed animals large and small and it performed very well on my Sony a7R4. I am now post processing my photos and I'm very pleased with the results. Since this is a top-end lens my expectations were high and I was not disappointed. It's fast, is flexible and has very good resolution/and color.

Great Lens, BUT

This is a great lens. A good amount of reach and is not too heavy. Shots are tack sharp in most conditions. The only issue I have with the lens is, too bad is is not and internal zoom, rather than the barrel extending. One other issue is there is NO barrel lock. There is a tightness ring, but I use a cotton carry and the lens will still creep. Otherwise it is a great lens. I would have payed a few bucks more for those two features.

Exceptionally Great Lens!

This lens has performed above and beyond my expectations, having used it for a few months now in combination with the A7IV. Primary use has been wildlife and bird photography, but this lens has outperformed and been wonderful in other situations as well! C-AF tracks exceptionally well. Construction is perfect and I have used it in extremely cold and harsh MN winter environments. No interior fogging or moisture. The lens is easy to handle and carry handheld or on a tripod or monopod, and hand placement feels natural. Images come out tack sharp. Using with 1.4x teleconverter, the one stop loss of light is absolutely not an issue with this lens. I love it!

This lens has been a great tool for my photography. I mostly do landscape and nature, it works great for both. Very clear all the way out to 400, not heavy and seems to be well built which is what I need for backpacking in the backcountry. I highly recommend it for anyone who is serious about quality photos.

I mainly photograph running dogs. This lens paired with my A9II makes it feel easy to get gorgeous, in focus, perfect shots even as dogs are running straight at me. Photo attached is 400mm f/5.6 1/2500 ISO250, minimal crop.

It's worth it

Like most people who are looking at a tele-zoom for Sony, I was very interested in the Sigma Contemporary 100-400 dg dn. Some weight, size, and price savings in comparison to the GM. I ended up returning 3 of the Sigma's before getting my GM. I kept the first copy of the GM I received. There's a reason the Sigma is $1500 less expensive. I do landscapes, so sharpness past the center of the frame is important to me. From my experience, the Contemporary is more like a 100-200mm that Sigma put a 300mm and a 400mm on the end of. All copies of the Sigma I tested were on an a7rii and all were decentered. I'm sure the Sigma would look better on a 24mp camera. The GM looks to be fully resolving the sensor in the center of the frame from 100-300. It blows the Sigma away here and at the edges. Resolution falls on my copy of the GM at 400mm but trust me it's not much. You're going to need a prime if you want any better at 400. There's no comparison between the two lenses at 400. I heard and saw reviews that said the Sony slightly bested the Sigma at 400mm. Lies! It's a landslide victory for the Sony. All copies of the Sigma weren't useable past the very center of the frame at 400. The issues with the GM are the price, size/ weight in comparison to the Sigma, and the tight/loose zoom setting. I won't comment on the price but while I would rather have a slightly smaller and lighter lens, the GM is not that much bigger than the Sigma. I'm no pro but the tight/loose setting on the GM is useless. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference on my copy between tight and loose. I would rather have a switch that locks it at 100mm, and it always set to loose. There is some zoom creep. All in all, I love the lens. It's good at infinity and minimum focus. Autofocus is accurate and fast. It is sharp all the way out to the edges. Even though the lens is a rockstar, good technique is still needed to get the most out of the lens. I expect to use it for years and would purchase it again.
