Oben GH-30 Reviews

A great head for active wildlife photography

I was looking for a gimbal head capable of handling a Nikon D750 camera and 200-500mm lens. At a bit under 7 lbs, this camera/lens combination is not the easiest for me to hand hold. I was looking for a head that would allow smooth, quick adjustments of this combination to photograph landscapes, architecture and wild life. This gimbal head provides those adjustments with ease. The head swivels smoothly on the base, gimbal arm can be set so that with a minimum of pressure it can be moved up or down to follow a bird in flight or locate it quickly as it moves about in shrub or tree. The camera/lens plate locks into place quickly and securely. I use a plate on the camera when fitted with a 28-300mm zoom lens and one fitted to the 200-500mm lens with camera attached. In both instances the gimbal provides a balanced, solid platform to follow the action. I would recommend this head for this active outdoor use.

This is a well made Gimbal head. It has a good smoothie fluid like motion and works well with my canon 90D and the Canon 100-400mm Mkii lens. I would highly recommend it to others!

For the price, quality is at the best. Little bit friction is there but may get ok by use I think. Best beginner gimbal.

Like all Oben products, the GH 30 gimbal is well made to a high quality standard. The value per dollar makes a meaningful difference to one with a budget.

Great Gimbal Head for Cost

This head has raised my wildlife photography to a new level. If you haven't used a Gimbal Head you are missing a great experience. The best thing about this head is the freedom of movement and balance. The camera will remain in any position when properly balanced with any size lens. I cannot compare this with the more expensive Gimbals, but I cannot imagine how they could do anything this head cannot that would justify the added expense other than long term durability. This is a well built head, no sticky leaking lubricants as have been reported for some Gimbals. I feel this is a great head for the money. By the way, it arrived four days earlier than estimated. Great service from B&H.

What is the process for removing the gimbal head from a tripod?
Asked by: Tom
It is the same as you would attach any other tripod head. What I have done is use the Manfrotto 625 (3296) RC0 Hexagonal Quick Release Adapter and added the Manfrotto 130-14 Hexagonal Quick Release Plate (Flat Bottomed) with 1/4"-20 Screw on each of my tripod heads so I only have to carry one tripod but can quickly change tripod heads in the field. I have several tripod heads, the Oben Gimblal head, Acratech Ball head and an Arca Swiss Mono Ball. Depending on the demands of the situation I can easily switch tripod heads to fit my needs.

After extensive research to match my situation - hiking trails in search of new birds in Panama,Cuba, Costa Rica, etc and my gear weight and age, I finally chose Oben GH-30 Gimbal Head with Sirui T-S Series Tripod. The mounting platform and screw are standard/ universal. They interface with the Oben GH-40 Gimbal Head perefectly. There should be no problem.
