Canon C200 Overview

This Canon EOS C200 Cinema Camera and Triple Lens Kit includes the Canon C200 camera body and three Canon EF USM lenses, providing you with a versatile digital cinema production kit. The three included lenses are the EF 16 to 35mm f/2.8L III, EF 24 to 70mm f/2.8L II, and EF 70 to 200mm f/2.8L IS III. The camera features a Super35-sized sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range and a native resolution of 4069 x 2160 (DCI 4K) and it supports UHD as well as Full HD. It supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which can be used to autofocus the included lenses.

The lenses cover a wide focal length range from 16 to 200mm, and since they each cover a full-frame sensor, there will be no vignetting on the C200's Super35 sensor at any focal length or f-stop. The wide-angle lens at 16 to 35mm overlaps with the mid-focal length range of 24 to 70mm, while the long lens has a focal length of 70 to 200mm. The lenses have matched f-stops, so intercutting between them should not cause the image to change due to exposure variations. This allows you to shoot faster without adjusting the lighting for a slow lens.

Canon EOS C200 Cinema Camera (EF-Mount)

Canon's EOS C200 EF Cinema Camera features a built-in EVF, 4" LCD screen, top handle, Super35 CMOS sensor and Dual Pixel autofocus. The EF lens mount on the EOS C200 offers compatibility not only with Canon's existing broad range of DSLR lenses but also with their line of EF-mount CN-E cinema prime and zoom lenses. The Super35 sensor is paired with Canon's Dual DIGIC DV 6 image processor, allowing it to capture and record up to DCI 4K resolution.

The C200 can also record Canon's Cinema RAW Light internally via its single CFast card slot. The camera also incorporates two SD card slots for recording UHD 4K/HD MP4 video. A built-in EVF enables the camera to maintain a small footprint when you shoot. However, the included removable 4" LCD screen as well as the included top handle and camera grip make this camera versatile for larger shoots. You can output video via the camera's SDI output, and the built-in XLR connectors provide two channels of audio at line, mic, and mic+48V level. A built-in Ethernet connector provides input/output control.

Main Features
Canon Super35 CMOS Sensor
Modeled on the Super35 motion picture film standard, the Canon CMOS sensor has an active image size of 24.4 x 13.5mm. It features 4096 x 2160 resolution to deliver Cine 4K images, as well as supporting Ultra HD (3840 x 2160), and Full HD (1920 x 1080).
Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology

This feature is ideal for users who regularly shoot with smaller crews, who shoot moving subjects, or who want smoother, more natural-looking autofocus.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology features a CMOS sensor that consists of an array of pixels that each feature two separate photodiodes. By continuously comparing their outputs during AF mode, phase-difference autofocus helps ensure non-blurred images and smooth focus transitions even when the talent and/or camera are moving. The new feature places a high priority on maintaining sharp focus while providing a natural, smooth autofocus movement with select Canon EF lenses - including newer-generation STM lenses - which offer even smoother and quieter operation.
Dynamic Range, ISO Range
The C200 features a dynamic range of approximately 13 stops, and an ISO range of 160 to 25,600. You can also select an expanded ISO range of 100 to 102,400. It supports Wide DR Gamma, Canon Log, and Canon Log 3.
Dual Canon DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor
The camera features Dual DIGIC DV 6 processors to handle the internal data processing.
Ultra High-Resolution EVF
The EOS C200 features a built-in 0.46", 1.23MP color EVF and 100% field of view coverage for comfortable viewing and accurate judgment of composition, focus, and color. The angle of the viewfinder is adjustable for additional user comfort.
4" LCD Touchscreen Camera Grip and Top Handle
Included with the C200 is a removable 4" Touchscreen LCD viewfinder. Also included with the C200 is a camera control handgrip as well as a removable top handle.
Rich Audio Controls
Built directly into the C200 are two XLR audio inputs with +48V phantom power, and a 3.5mm microphone terminal is also built into the camera. Audio is recorded uncompressed in 16-bit PCM format at 48 kHz for high-fidelity sound. Both XLR inputs as well as the mic terminal have the option for automatic as well as manual gain control.
Canon Cinema RAW Light
This codec allows you to record raw data internally to a CFast 2.0 card via the camera's single CFast card slot. The CFast card slot enables capturing DCI 4K in Canon's Cinema RAW Light format.

Canon C200 Reviews

Best deal out there for EF Lens Owners

By Eric
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-04-19

Being a Canon DSLR user for the last 15 years shooting professionally and for fun, I was delighted to buy a C200B Cinema Camera in March 2023 and I absolutely love it. It was on sale at the time, but now it is $500 cheaper, so anyone owning EF glass who wants to get into the Canon Cinema EOS world for a great price for value - now is a good opportunity! CFAST cards are not too affordable in my opinion, and there is mixed info out there on what is compatible. Canon only published that the 256GB cards are compatible, but some Youtubers have said the SanDisk 512's work. But, I went with 3 of the SanDisk 256GB CFAST cards while they were on sale. They work great and I am glad I purchased them. From what I understand they used to be very, very expensive. The three 256GB card I bought get me about an hour and a half of Canon Cinema RAW Light footage. I am looking forward to any deep sales on these cards in the future. I also got a couple of the SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC cards to have onboard for shooting non-RAW footage, such as MP4 and XF-AVC files. They can also be leveraged for proxy footage while shooting RAW on the CFAST, and these files can lessen the burden on your editing machine. I bought the GR-V1 handgrip, which is essential for maximizing the camera ergonomics, and couldn't be happier. Just be careful with the cable connection as it is not super robust, and I think that without proper care it could be a point of failure. Last, I use a cheap Feelworld monitor that has SDI inputs so I can get the waveforms from the C200B. I don't think the HDMI connection will give you the waveform. I am happy with the SDI monitor and the GR-V1 handgrip combo so I can control autofocus points, etc. I don't need the touchscreen monitor that is sold buy Canon. Too small, and too expensive. There are a few guys on YouTube who have posted videos on how to properly expose shots, as well as many other very helpful tips - FYI. Just do a quick search and you will find great info. Good luck and have fun, because that is what it's all about!

Just what I wanted

I had my eye on one of these for quite a while. With the price drop I couldn't resist it. It's going to replace my basic C100 that I bought to try a cine style camera. Love that it does 4K 60p to SD cards, love that it outputs raw on the HDMI port. Not in love with all the bits and pieces it has: Why do you need two power adapters, one for the camera, one for the battery charger? The top handle is a bit clunky to put together and install but once it's there it's OK. I'd like to see it be a little bit lower profile. Lots of places to mount accessories on it that I'll never use. The LCD needs a hood as it's not very bright in daylight. But the eyepiece more than makes up for that if you can shoot that way. Very happy with it, however, and I expect to make it my workhorse camera.

The Canon c200 has so many options and is easy to use. Having two SD card slots is great. Independent filmmakers like myself can really appreciate the quality of image this camera shoots.

The camera is nothing but exceptional for what it does and the price. But the information on the B&H site is wrong and misleading when it comes to the dynamic range because the camera has up to 15 stop of dynamic range not 13. When shooting raw it shoots in Clog 2 with up to 15 stops of dynamic range. This needs to be fixed on the website.

Bought a C200 in 2020. Pro's: The build quality and ergonomics are first rate. This is a kaizen / high quality camera. Everything is reliable and works as it should. Intuitive design. ND filters are awesome. Inputs / Outputs are great. Dual XLR's very convenient for audio. Still small enough to run and gun - even for smaller members of crew. Con's: The worst thing about this camera is the inability to use any cFast card larger than 256gb - even though 1tb cards are common and work in other cameras. Case in point. We have a BMPCC6k. It happily accepts a 1tb Angelbird cFast card - our C200 does not. The Black Magic also happily records 4k to SD cards. The C200 does not (it only records HD to the SD cards. I wish Canon would have update firmware to allow 1tb cFast. That would enable us to keep the C200 for several more years.

Can you record 4k mp4 and HD mp4 to different SD cards at the same time?
Asked by: Shem
I'm afraid not. You will not be able to record a 4K MP4 on one SDXC Card and an HD MP4 on the other. However, you can record 4K Cinema RAW Light to the CFast 2.0 card slot and a Proxy 2K File on to SDXC.
