Steinberg Wavelab Pro overview

  • 1Description

Available for download, Steinberg WaveLab 9.5 is software designed for the mastering process. It’s designed to aid you in producing audio deliverables for the CD plant, for streaming, or for multi-channel platforms. As such, the software provides tools aplenty for audio analysis, audio restoration, sonic shaping, and other processes integral to the practice of mastering.

The previous version of WaveLab came with a redesigned user interface, giving you a central tab area that incorporated commonly-used functions, as well as a waveform display. Tool windows denoted metering displays, error correction functions, markers, and more, with full support for mid/side processing. If you wanted to use your favorite third party plug-ins on only the sum or difference channels, this was made possible by the previous iteration of WaveLab.

WaveLab 9.5 picks up from where WaveLab 9 left off in several ways. First of all, a new Spectrogram has been provided, with customizable display settings to help you find and edit the most problematic parts of the audio spectrum. In addition to the Spectrogram, WaveLab 9.5 provides a new Wavelet display for visualizing the content of audio in a more accurate fashion, one based on musical pitch scaling, showing you, in easy-to-grasp terms, how dynamic energy is spread out across the frequency spectrum.

The Spectrum Editor itself has been expanded to provide comprehensive tools for editing, mitigating, or emphasizing infinitely specific portions of the time and frequency domains. For instance, a Lasso tool has been supplied, as well as a Brush and Wand tool. Also on hand is exclusive, patent-pending technology called Inpainting, which seeks to remove unwanted noise from audio material, analyzing spectral information of the surrounding area and creating intelligent, unobtrusive replacements. This technology can help you deal with dropouts or artifacts present in the source material, obviating the need for creative fades or region replacements.

You’ll note that the old Sonnox software previously included with WaveLab has been replaced with a new suite of plug-ins called RestoreRig; this suite’s DeNoiser, DeBuzzer, and DeClicker (which also comprises a DePopper and a DeCrackler) have all been coded with fresh algorithms, and each plug-in provides a user-interface commensurate with the aethestics of today’s plug-ins.

In addition to RestoreRig, improvements have been made to the MasterRig suite of plug-ins, including the Maximizer (which now sports a Modern algorithm and a mix controller), as well as a reconfigured equalizer. A tube compressor is now on hand for emulating the cream of yesterday’s crop, as is a vintage compressor modeled on some British dynamics modules of yesteryear. Two new Batch Processor plug-ins have been added, which are sure to please sound-designers: an Audio Mixer, which allows you to fingerprint your audio tracks for protection, and a module that delays the next inline process, so that you don’t wind up unintentionally affecting the transients of multiple files upon instantiation of many plug-ins in tandem.

Many more features are now present, and for a full explication and breakdown of these features, please peruse the Features section below this paragraph. WaveLab 9.5 software is compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms, and as always, supports third-party plug-ins in your audio chain. It also continues to support the seamless and direct exchange of audio material between other Steinberg products, allowing you to speed up the workflow between Nuendo, Cubase, and WaveLab.

New Features at a Glance
  • Spectrogram now offers a customizable view, color schemes with presets, display settings, psychoacoustic scales, and more
  • Wavelet display now offers for a more accurate visual representation of the musical content of an audio file
  • Spectrum Editor provides whole new set of tools and functionality to surgically edit in the Spectrogram
  • Patent-pending Audio Inpainting technology recreates and/or replaces corrupt audio material, logically using the spectral information of the surrounding area
  • Redesigned Error Correction tab provides straightforward and easy detection and correction of clicks and errors
  • New RestoreRig plug-in suite, including a DeClicker, DeCrackler, DePopper, DeNoiser and DeBuzzer, replaces previously-supplied Sonnox bundle
  • Live Spectrogram provides real-time visualization of the spectral information of signals during recording or playback
  • Revamped plug-in set now includes new Batch Processor modules and enhancements in MasterRig
  • GUI has been redesigned for most dynamic processes
  • New processing algorithms
  • Apple Touch Bar support for easy and direct access to your favorite tasks and functions at your fingertips
  • Further improvements, including high DPI support, bleep censor generator, gapless MP3 rendering, iXML track name support, and more
New Workflow Improvements
  • The meters’ input point can now be set to any position of the effects-chain in the Master section
  • Render settings can now be stored as presets
  • Clip gain can now be applied to the pre- or post-effect chain; this new option will enhance the use of dynamics and saturation effects on the clip level
  • The Meta Normalizer can now analyze the clip gain before or after the clip effect chain; this allows you to use loudness normalizing before any gain changes introduced by a clip effect
  • Bypass Master section now doesn’t bypass the Playback processing section. This is especially useful when using room-correction plug-ins
  • Import cue sheet is no longer limited to 44.1 kHz and works with any sample rate
  • The offset-time between mouse and cursor positions is now displayed on the status bar
Additional Additions
  • New Auto Save Master Section preset in Render options
