Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens
Versatile and Stabilized Telephoto Zoom
Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, the FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS, from Sony, is a versatile zoom mixing long reach with apt optics, impressive image stabilization, and quick autofocus performance. It's a well-rounded choice for photographing sports and distant subjects, and portable enough for everyday, walk-around shooting and event photography.
G Lens Series
  • Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Image Stabilization, AF, and Handling
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
  • Focus range limiter button offers faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
  • Customizable focus hold button for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 3' yields an impressive maximum magnification of 0.31x, making this lens suitable for both close-up and distant subjects.
Chiaro Pro 72mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 72mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Sensei OC-CK Optics Care and Cleaning Kit

Keep your optical surfaces clean with the Sensei OC-CK Optics Care and Cleaning Kit. This kit contains a pack of lens tissues, a lens cleaning pen, bulb air blower, paint brush, lipstick brush, lens cleaning fluid, microfiber cleaning cloth, and see-through mesh travel case to put everything in. This kit can be used to clean a variety of different optics and glass. You can use the air bulb blower and any of the three supplied brushes to initially remove dust from the surface. Sensei recommends applying a small amount of the alcohol- and ammonia-free cleaning fluid directly to the lens tissue. Then, gently rub in small circular motions to remove stubborn smudges or fingerprints from the glass. For those more stubborn blemishes or smudges, the lens pen is very effective.

I am debating between the Sony E 70-350mm F/4.5-6.3 G OSS and Sony FE 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G OSS for use on FX30. Any advice?
Asked by: Robert
The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens and the Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G are sharp lenses. However, the Sony FE 70-300mm does have the advantage of a wider aperture at the long end of the zoom.

question

I already have a B+W multicoated circular polarizer, vintage around 2000. Is there a reason I would prefer to use this included non-coated polarizer instead?
Asked by: Ross
The Hoya 72mm UV Haze NXT HMC Filter included with the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens with UV Filter Kit, B&H # SO7030045GF, is a multi-coated UV filter, not a circular polarizer filter. The filters have two different purposes. A UV filter is typically used both to filter out UV light to ensure the extra blue tint from ultraviolet light does not contaminate your image, but most often it is used as a standard protection filter. As ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, UV filters look clear, which is why they are good as protection filters.Circular polarizer filters are designed for reducing or eliminating reflections and glare on non-metallic items, such as glass, water, foliage, and other items. They work similarly to polarized sunglasses. Also, depending on the position of the sun, a circular polarizer filter can also deepen the blue color in the sky on bright blue days. Circular polarizer filters and UV filters have different usages; most people keep the UV filter on the lens for protection at all times, and will simply add the circular polarizer filter to the front threads of the UV filter when shooting outdoors or when needing to eliminate reflections. There is not a reason to use one over another as they may be used together.

If anyone has compared this to Sigma’s new 100-400 and can share their findings I’d like to hear your thoughts?
Asked by: Ian
Sigma's 100-400mm lens has more reach but is noticeably heavier. The Sony FE 70-300mm balances better if you plan on using the lens hand-held, especially on a smaller camera body. 300mm is a little short for wildlife photography (birds) unless you can get fairly close or have enough megapixels to crop heavily. Although I appreciated the Sigma's extra zoom, it was too heavy to carry around hiking and use without a tripod. But if weight and size aren't a consideration, the Sigma is arguably the better lens. I did encounter issues with the auto-focus on the Sigma when taking bursts. It would focus on the first shot but not the subsequent ones. This seems to be an issue that some users but not everyone has. Not sure if that's down to shooting style or individual lens variation.
