G-Technology G-Speed Shuttle overview

  • 1Description

Built for easy travel between on-site locations and studios, the G-SPEED Shuttle 24TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology delivers storage for demanding workflows, such as 4K, 8K, high dynamic range (HDR), and high frame rate (HFR) footage. Its sustained data transfer rates of up to 1000 MB/s allow users to edit multi-camera footage in real time, render multi-layer effects, and export efficiently. Featuring an overall capacity of 24TB, which is split over four 6TB 7200 rpm Enterprise-class SATA 3.5" hard drives, this array comes pre-configured in RAID 5, which provides a good balance of performance and data redundancy, but is also able to be configured as RAID 0, 1, and 10, each of which provides performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both.

The G-SPEED Shuttle comes preformatted for macOS 10.12 and later, but can be used with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 via a simple reformat. It achieves connectivity with its dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, each of which provides bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s and is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to connect to your host system, the other may be used for daisy chaining up to five additional Thunderbolt-compatible devices together, including additional storage, displays, and docks. Included is a Thunderbolt 3 cable and a power cord, and protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

    G-Technology G-Speed Shuttle reviews

    G-SPEED Shuttle 24TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (4 x 6TB) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The G-SPEED Shuttle was the RAID I was looking for When looking to replace my 8 TB G-RAID with Firewire connectivity with a newer RAID using Thunderbolt 3, I narrowed my search down to the G-SPEED Shuttle and thePegasus3 R4 RAID array from Promise Technology. After doing my own research, looking at reviews and talking to sales support from G-Technology and B&H, I decided on the G-SPEED Shuttle. G-Tech informed me that Promise Technology makes the hardware RAID controller for their product. G-Technology, however, comes with enterprise-grade HDDs standard and includes a 5-year warranty. I also preferred the physical design of the G-SPEED Shuttle, with the built-in handle for portability should the need arise. Setup was a breeze if you stick with the default RAID 5 configuration. Since I wanted to change that to RAID 10 (two RAID 1s mirroring each other), it was a bit more complicated. I had to download theG-SPEED Studio Utility from their website, after first contacting their tech support to find out that it is located under the G-SPEED Studio product listing rather than the G-SPEED Shuttle section. But following the instructions once I found the utility was easy even for a novice like myself. The G-SPEED Shuttle has given me 12 TB of storage (due to RAID 10 config) which was a 300% increase from my previous 4 TB capacity. Granted, I also lose some speed due to my choice in RAID configurations, but the piece of mind in having total redundancy and safety even in the event of a HD failure is worth it. That said, the G-SPEED Shuttle is blazing fast compared to my older Firewire model, and now allows me to use the Thunderbolt 3 connections on my new iMac. I almost deducted a point for the complications with the utility issue and because I would have liked to have seen a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable included, but ultimately decided those were minor issues. The cable included measures 36 inches though that information is not included in the product information or on the box. This means that you will have to position the G-SPEED Shuttle on the desktop next to your Mac unless you opt to purchase an aftermarket Thunderbolt 3 cable in a longer length. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. The G-SPEED Shuttle performs well, looks great and provides me room to grow my photography. Lastly, the free bundledG-Technology 500 GB G-Drive with rugged bumper was a nice bonus that also helped influence my decision. I'm using it to replace a G-Drive Mini portable HD that I carry to and from the office.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not connect with any computer The G-Speed is not visible on any computer. I work for days with European support people with no success. Now even one of the four drives turned red. Very disappointed, probably have to send it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Fast! This raid array is fantastic! Plenty of space for the money and the performance is spot on. Great for multi-stream 4K material.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As advertised Using this in default Raid 5 on a mac, super easy to install and get going. Moves files real fast, no complaints.
