MagMod MMSTRKIT01 Overview

  • 1Description

Quickly and easily improve the quality of your on-camera lighting with this MagMod Starter Kit. It features a unique and simple-to-use MagGrip that slides onto most flashes and uses magnets to secure accessories, such as the MagSphere diffuser and MagGrid included here.

  • MagSphere

Transform your on-camera flash into an omni-directional light source with the MagSphere, designed for use with the MagMod flash modifier system. The soft, diffused light is flattering and it has an integrated gel slot for adjusting the color of your flash. The two neodymium rare-earth magnets allow it to quickly attach to a separately available MagGrip, as well as other modifiers, such as a MagGrid, for more control over your light. Additionally, it is made from molded silicone rubber for a sleek, simple design with good durability and it comes with a microfiber carrying pouch.

    UPC: 854211005107
  • MagGrid

Control light spill and narrow your flash's beam angle to 40° with the MagGrid, designed for the MagMod flash modifier system. This grid efficiently focuses the light and attaches to the MagGrip via two neodymium rare-earth magnets. Also, it is stackable with other accessories and even other MagGrids, allowing users to further narrow their beam angle. It is made from molded silicone rubber for a sleek, simple design with good durability.

    UPC: 854211005015
  • MagGrip

Made from an elastic silicone rubber, the MagGrip from MagMod stretches over the head of most on-camera flash units and provides two neodymium rare-earth magnets for quickly mounting a variety of accessories from the MagMod flash modifier system. The rubber offers a secure, tight grip on the flash head and is durable. Also, the flash head should be about 2.5" wide for the modifiers to be able to properly attach to the flash head.

MagMod MMSTRKIT01 Reviews

Starter Flash Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile light modifier! ...still not an umbrella Magmod is awesome for the versatility it brings to situations, it's possible to change modifiers extremely quickly.? The two big things that keep it from being a five star system for me is that while it has lots of gel options it only has one blue gel and it's a full ctb which makes it impossible to match color perfectly when it's overcast. The other thing which honestly I knew going in is that the magsphere does soften the light but not anywhere near the lovely quality of light that comes from an umbrella. Still, the system is great for lots of other reasons as long as you don't expect it to replace the other modifiers in your kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Produces Great Light! I was a bit skeptical given its size, but just used this at my first wedding. The magnetic attachment does create weight at the end of the flash head. If you are used to having your flash at a 45 degree angle to bounce off of a ceiling then you will be taken aback as the head must either be straight up or at 90 degrees. That being said, the magsphere modifier created beautiful light, much better than the larger softbox that I usually use on my speedlight at weddings. Setup is super fast and the parts do not really take up space in my bag. I use my speedlight off camera with a 12" handle. The bottom line is that it allowed me to take some beautiful photographs! I'm going to order some gels next.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magmod - it works After loosing my other flash diffuser(Phong) I decided to try the Magmod. I like the magnets that hold things together. It is much easier to store than the other one I had. Of course after the Magmod arrived I found my other diffuser. I compared them and the Magmod came out on top. Hardly any shadows at all. When you buy it make sure to purchase the starter kit, it includes the piece that attaches to your flash. Without that you can not attach the diffuser.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid gear, a bit top heavy Before buying I saw that many mentioned it was too heavy on the flash- it is noticeably top heavy which can make it slightly awkward to handle but it did not cause me any major issues. It’s well made and creates a nice light. While using a Nikon flash and shooting every few seconds I did have the flash overheat at one point in a shoot, so I’m wondering if the grid perhaps got hot against the surface of the flash caused an overheat but haven’t done further testing on it yet. I’m likely to continue buying into the MagMod system after buying the starter kit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Top Heavy Sadly this modifier is too heavy for my Canon 600EX-RT. I am unable to tilt my flash when it is on. It just falls to a right angle. I have 3 Canon 600 EX-RT flashes and it does it with all of them. So now I have to try and figure out a way I can keep it in a titled position. (tape?) This however is not a great solution - as that would meant it is in a fixed position and would limited how I capture my photos and not at all much use when I am constantly changing the direction of my flash to accommodate subjects that move around or to achieve different exposure etc. Sorry but it is a complete fail on my Canon 600 Flash. I do not experience the same issue with my Yongnou 600 Ex_RT flash.? The tilt facility on it is much firmer/tighter so it does hold it (whether over time it will weaken from the weight is yet to be seen.) This MagBouce has to be used with the MagMod grip.? the MagMod? grib, contrary to advertisements is actually quite hard to put on your flash. The opening is quite small and has to be stretched to go around your flash head. I have managed to get it on my flash twice by myself and it takes time and effort. Usually I need assistance to do it. I have two of these (unfortunately!) so its not that one is faulty - they are both the same. They are incredibly hard to put on. As a result I generally leave it on. the downside to leaving it on is then packing my flash away - its wider at the top and longer so does not fit in the usual place. Also if I leave it on and then want to use the flash on a stand with a different modifier (i.e. lastolite soft box) I have to take the grip off as it will not fit through the adapter that holds the softbox. All of these things take up time and space. So basically I wish I never bought it as there are so many cons and pros to it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always Looking for a Good Thing This is a unique means of diffusing the light from my on-camera strobe. Like many photographers, I have a large shelf filled with diffusers that looked good in the store but then don't work so well out in the field. I've only had occasion to use my Magmod at two events so I'm still dialing things in. I'm impressed, though, with how well built these components are. They're built to last. In particular, the magnets that hold the pieces together are very strong so the diffuser doesn't fall off. It's going to take some trial and error to figure out the camera adjustments to get the best looking images but so far I'm very pleased. The one drawback is the cost. These units are not cheap. Even if they're the next best thing in lighting, they can set you back a couple of coins. Another issue is the size of the components. They take up a fair amount of space in my bags and carrying cases. Small price to pay, though, if they do the job.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too heavy! Pros: The magnets are strong and keep the diffuser in place. I was tired of my Gary Fong diffusers slipping off--I lost two in one month! The diffuser produces a decent look. Cons: It was too heavy!! It adds so much weight to my already heavy gear. The weight also prevents my speedlight from staying in certain postions (degrees) while shooting. I end up having to hold the speedlight up with one hand, while holding my camera and shooting with the other. Very awkward. Produces red eye when directed directly at model. I don't like shooting with the flash pointing dirctly at my subject, but when bounced off the celing, I lost too much light ?(Not so with the Fong--it gve a nice amount of light spilling off the outside of the diffuser, when the speedlight was directed towards the celing.) Other cons--it almost takes two people to wrangle the rubber band base onto the speedlight. I asked one of my college-aged students to do it for me--he couldn't manage on his own; it took the two of us! I probably would not recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the rest I used the gary fong for years. However on the first day out with the mag mod, I instantly saw the difference. This diffuser does great job spreading the light evenly. Pointing it directly at the subject has even worked for me.

Will this fit Vivitar DF-864C flash? Or will it ...

Will this fit Vivitar DF-864C flash? Or will it fit new Yongnuo RT ii? (Both for canon)
Asked by: Sara
Sara - both of those flashes are the same general shape and size of MOST speedlights. The answer is YES for both, the MagGrip (the base of our system) is a universal stretch to fit mount that will stretch around most all speedlights. The concern comes in with flashes that are abnormally LARGE or SMALL - it's the extremes where the questions come in. Hope this helps !

Will this work on Godox VING V860IIS TTL Li-Ion Flash Kit for Sony Cameras?
Asked by: Thomas
Yes, the MagMod system will work with the Godox VING V860IIS - which is of the same general size and shape of most all speedlights on the market today. The MagGrip, which is the base of our system is a universal, stretch to fit, silicone band that will stretch around the head of that flash so that you can mount the rest of our modifiers on your flash. What about using this with a flash bracket? Is it practical?
Asked by: John
Yes, very practical, it doesn’t affect the bottom part of your speedlite at all. UNLESS your bracket is something like a mount adapter bracket, then you will have to remove it. Overall it is a joy to use, it changed my workflow for good.
