The BPC-16 Microball with Panning from Really Right Stuff is a 4.4 oz compact and portable ball head that has a 5 lb weight capacity, which makes it suitable for small DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, or other small accessories used for photographic or video use. Moreover, the integrated screw knob locks the Arca-type compatible clamp down while the second locking wheel, which surrounds the first knob, enables the head to rotate a full 360°. Meanwhile, at the top of the stem, the quick release lever disengages to allow movement on the ball, and the cut notch at the bottom of the head allows it to be placed at a 90° angle.

I was tossing up between this and the BC-18. I find the BPC-16 more appealing due to the ability to pan and rotate it 90 degrees. But I read a review that said in practice the 90 degree rotation does not work on larger cameras as the small size of the ballhead does not leave enough room for the camera to rotate. The tripod body get in the road. He recommends the BC-18 as a much better ballhead. I was interested whether others have had difficulty in rotating the head 90 degrees to portrait mode?
The BPC-16 can only hold up to 5 lbs, so using it with a larger camera may cause some issues with rotating the head to portrait mode. This would make the BC-18 a better head if you don't need the panning function and are using a heavier camera.

RRS mentions the use of both anodized aluminum and hardened steel. Is the ball (and the integrated stem) made of aluminum or steel?
The ball and its stem are one solid piece of steel that has been treated with a FNC (ferritic nitrocarburizing) finish.
