Nikon 180-400mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Comprising both length and flexibility, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR from Nikon is a medium to super telephoto zoom characterized by its advanced optical design, internal teleconverter, and host of handling assets to suit photographing fast-moving subjects. Distinguishing itself among most zooms, this 180-400mm features a built-in 1.4x teleconverter to allow for on-the-fly switching to an effective 252-560mm f/5.6 lens for greater reach. A constant f/4 maximum aperture is also a key feature for realizing consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and for producing shallow depth of field and selective focusing imagery. Complementing these traits is a sophisticated optical design that utilizes eight extra-low dispersion glass elements and one fluorite element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to individual elements to reduce flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical merits, this 180-400mm is also characterized by its inclusion of a Vibration Reduction image stabilization system that compensates for four stops of camera shake to enable sharper handheld shooting. A Silent Wave Motor also benefits producing sharp imagery, and affords quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. As a lens intended for use in trying conditions, it is weather-sealed and features a fluorine coating on the front element to resist fingerprints and smudging. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to assist working with a support system and this lens utilizes an electromagnetic diaphragm to ensure consistent exposure stability when shooting at fast continuous speeds.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this 180-400mm lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 270-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Built-in 1.4x teleconverter allows you to instantly extend your reach to 252-560mm (or 378-840mm equivalent with DX cameras) simply by flipping the right-hand switch. Since the teleconverter is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.4x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.
One fluorite element and eight extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated into the optical design to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve notable clarity and color accuracy.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Focus range limiter allows you to constrict the focus system to a 19.7' to infinity range for faster focusing performance.
Assignable Function buttons can be used for lens-based activation of AF/AE Lock modes or for switching between different AF Area Modes.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

    Nikon 180-400mm f/4.0 reviews

    AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Telephoto lens I've ever used! I've been a pro wildlife photographer for 30 years and have owned and used most all of the Nikon telephoto...300 f3.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4 and 600 f4, along with the original Nikon 200-400. This lens far surpasses the old 200-400 (which never performed well at 400mm at any distance. And it's as sharp as my current latest-version 400 2.8 as far as I can discern! The versatility of this lens, ranging from 180-560mm is fantastic for field work (and great on the back) and used in DX mode on my D850 is effectively a 180-840mm lens! Well worth the price for the versatility it offers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible quality Got my lens recently, and first thing I did a focus check with one of the micro focus adjustment software. I got +2, with and without the teleconverter. Used the lens on my new D5. Never had a lens so stable on the results. Went to take pics of birds in flight and nesting egrets. Again the lens preformed beautifully. At 560 mm it was incredible sharp. I had an old 200-400, and there is no comparison. Also flipping the tele is no sweat.Very happy I made the purchase despite the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens ever for wildlife photography I am a serious amateur who has been using Nikon lenses and cameras for 15 years. Before purchasing this lens, my most expensive and highest quality lens was the Nikon 400mmf2.8 E. Over the past 10 years I have made 15 trips to South Africa, mostly in Kruger National Park. Anyone who knows this park, is aware of the great amount of wildlife and birds that can be easily photographed from your rental vehicle. My 400mmf2.8 has made the trip three times but it is a challenge to transport this lens by plane. Any thing smaller or lighter would be most welcome. In addition, this lens is not always the ideal choice when the animals are not so far away. I was hoping for an alternative that would give me that razor sharp image quality, instant focus, with the plus of being a zoom, and a bit smaller. When the 180-400f4 was introduced, I knew I would eventually have to try it out. I purchased and received this lens on July 10th. During this time I was following the blog of Brad Hill who was doing some serious field testing of this lens. In three short weeks I was hooked. The versatility of this lens along with its absolute stunning image quality is a real game changer. This lens is sharp, sharp, sharp wide open, and sharp right to the corners, even on FX. It truly holds its own against the 400mmf2.8, and that is saying a lot! Everything you expect out of a prime lens, you get with this lens. Fast accurate focus, stunning VR, built like a tank, well balanced, and thoughtful layout of controls and switches. Vignetting is fine on DX cameras such as the D500. On FX cameras the vignetting is a bit more than one would desire as the focal length goes below 300mm. This is the only real flaw I can find. Fortunately, it is easily corrected in software. Do not let it worry you. In all other criteria, this lens is perfection. I own all of Nikon's Teleconverters, and have took them on and off my primes countless times. What a difference to just be able to flip a switch to engage the 1.4 TC. No more birds flying away as I mess with the TC on the 400mmf2.8. Couple the 180-400f4 with Nikon's newest 70-200f2.8 E and you have the best overall wildlife photography system there is, period. I never liked the bulkiness of Nikon's lens hoods so I fashion my own out of ABS plastic. It is just long enough to protect the lens front from impact. When inside a vehicle, this short lens hood makes handling of the lens far easier (especially when in tight spaces). The coatings on these professional lenses are so good that a long hood is seldom needed to prevent flair. I am also able to keep the lens weight to 7.7# and the overall size to only 5" in diameter. When traveling on planes, this lens is in my roller bag with just t-shirts wrapped around for protection. I just flew with it to Japan and back with no problems. I have a plastic lens cap that fits neatly in the lens hood itself. (The airlines never stop at making more restrictions for carry on items, so I keep it as simple as I can.) Like everyone else, I wish it cost less and weighed less. But it exudes quality and excellence like nothing I have ever owned before. If you ever have to sell it, you will get most of your money back. I am currently using the 180-400 lens with both the D500 and the D850. When using the D850 you can have a total range of 180mm to 1080mm (6x zoom!) if you are willing to accept that 12mp is enough for a good image. From 180-560mm you have a full frame image (45.4mp). From 560mm to 1080mm you will steadily have to sacrifice some pixels. At 840mm you are essentially using the D850 as a a cropped sensor (DX) with about 20mp. By 1080mm you still have just over 12mp. On many lenses such heavy cropping will not give good results. However, this lens is very, very sharp and you will get excellent images at 1080mm. Remember that not long ago, 12mp was the standard. Think of the Nikon D700 or D3. With the D500 you still get to 1080mm but you start out at 270mm due to the DX crop factor. Nikon made history with cameras such as the D5, D500 and the D850. It has now made the ultimate lens to go with those camera bodies. Think about this. Due to manageable weight, excellent VR, stunning image resolution, quick and accurate focus ability, one now has a lens that can get excellent 12mp images at 1080mm handheld! Yes, you can handhold this lens. With a D500 or D850 attached the weight is under 10 pounds. Go back five years and ask if this could have been possible. I don't think so. The only shortcomings for the 18-400f4. lens is the vignetting on full frame, the cost, and maybe the weight. (lighter is most always better). Everything else about this lens is perfection. (May I add that there is no focus breathing nor any focus shift)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 180 - 400 Fantastic !! Super sharp with or without the TC engaged. Used out in the desert with heavy winds & was great to not have to take off body to use TC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than my 200-400 f4 I'm very pleased with this lens. The TC flips in instantly without even taking your finger off the shutter button (unlike the Canon version of this lens), and this lens is indistinguishable in sharpness in comparison to the best of the big primes. And I thought some of you might benefit to know that the lens cap that I was using on my 200-400 f4 lens fits VERY WELL on this lens. That lens cap is the AquaTechASCN-3 Soft Cap for Select Nikon AF-S NIKKOR Lenses. This cap can be found here on B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perhaps The Best Nikon Lens Ever! This lens is unreal in how sharp, fast focusing, and versatile it is. All the reviews that I had read prior to purchasing, raved about the quality of the image. I totally agree that it is as sharp as a prime 400 mm, and starting at 180 mm rather than 200 mm is really a significant difference. Lastly, and literally with the flip of switch your range goes from 252 to 560. Find a way to get this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Excellent image quality across all f-stops. Not too heavy; but a monopod at least is necessary. Looking forward to taking using it in the field.
