Vanguard Alta Fly 55T Reviews

so disappointed in quality

The screw that holds the handle backs out when you use it. Once it gets unscrewed enough you can no longer retract the collapsible handle. Totally unacceptable for an item at this price point. Dimensions are perfect for small aircraft. Zippers aren't smooth. Way too much padding in backpack straps/ back which adds unnecessary bulk.

First one wouldn't roll straight, replacement OK

I tried both this bag and its big brother the 58T, which is 2 pounds heavier. First trip through airports and I couldn't get the fully loaded bag to roll straight, so B&H happily sent me a replacement. Otherwise, I'd love to see the tripod holder on the back like the 58T instead of the side, to allow for a bottle pocket on the side. Love the fact that the inside "guts" of the bag can be removed, allowing the back to offer alternate uses.

The bag that could have been...

I researched a lot of camera bags, and maybe my expectations were unrealistic, but unfortunately, this bag did not deliver. When they say a bad holds two bodies and five lenses, they don't mean D850's with battery grip and longer lenses. And despite being a high quality bag, it wouldn't stand up on its four wheels. It just isn't deep enough. It was close at the bottom of the bag, but near the top handle, it would barely fit a point-n-shoot. My existing Lowepro Protactic 450 holds almost all my gear (minus a 105mm f/1.4), and fits carry-on size requirements, but it doesn't have wheels.

My First Rolling Air Travel Bag

The 55T is the next to largest size. I was worried that the largest size would be kicked off the plane. I was able to fit an A7sii, 3 lenses including a 70-200mm, a wide angle tokina, and a Sigma Art Lens zoom, a go pro, go pro handle, case of sd cards, 2 metabones in cases, my 15 inch mac book pro, notepad, wallet, keys. Good points: the wheels are super smooth. Bad points: The back straps are difficult to navigate and will fall to floor unless you bury them in pockets. I guess I could take the time to figure them out but they do seem hard to manipulate. This bag is too big to fit under the seat in front of you. The bag will fit in overhead compartments on larger airplanes. But on planes where there is one row on one side and two rows on the other -- the bag will not fit up top. I was lucky that there was room in the closet in first class so that's where the airline put it during my flight on a small plane.

Great bag,taking on vacation.

nice design but some serious flaws.

For the most part a very nicely designed bag, but... there are a few minor flaws and one major one that has me already looking at another bag. First off, the button on the extended handle that collapses the handle is too sensitive to the touch, so the extended handle sometimes collapses when I do not wish it. A sturdier mechanism is needed. The second minor problem is the small nylon pouch on the side that holds the bottom of the tripod. Too small. Needs to be 2 inches deeper. The main problem, and the deal breaker, is that the top of the bag is truncated, thereby losing a couple of inches of interior space at the top of the bag. Which means that my DSLR's prism sticks up too high, the closure is tight and, and this makes the camera too vulnerable to damage on impact. Two more inches would make all the difference in the world. I could arrange the interior configuration to put the camera body at the bottom of the bag, giving it protection, but that means the camera is difficult to get to quickly. Other than those items this bag is real nice.

Good concept, terrible execution

I waited to write this review until I had used this bag a few times. I have now taken it on 3 trips and can honestly say it's fairly horrible. First, the telescoping handles do not stay locked so when you are wheeling your gear through the airport or parking lot, you must constantly adjust the height of the handle. Second, the bag, when fully loaded with cameras, lenses, laptop and tablet is very front-heavy, causing it to fall forward. Third, for me, the backpack straps are sort of a waste of space and design. I will only RARELY use this feature and think the design would be improved by putting a slot there for a laptop which would better distribute weight. All in all, the concept is good but it seems they never actually tested this item before going in to production.

This has a compartment for a 14" laptop. For a 15" laptop you would need to move up to the Vanguard Alta Fly 62T Roller Bag (Black) which has room for up to a 17" laptop, BH #VAALTAFLY62T.
