Zoom F1 Overview

  • 1Description

The Zoom F1 Field Recorder with Lavalier Microphone combines a two-channel, F1 audio recorder with an LMF-1 omnidirectional lavalier microphone. Lightweight (at 4.2 oz) and with a low-profile design, it attaches neatly to belts or waistbands, and fits inside pockets without being seen, providing videographers, vloggers, and journalists with a flexible solution to capture high-quality audio for video, no matter how far away the subject is from the camera.

The F1 is equipped with a stereo 1/8" mic/line input that delivers plug-in power to small microphones, and a proprietary 10-pin connector compatible with all Zoom microphone capsules. It records stereo audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz in BWF-compliant WAV or a variety of MP3 formats, directly to microSD or microSDHC cards. The unit offers a series of one-touch buttons that give you quick access to record level, limiter control, lo-cut filter, and volume output as well as an 1/8" stereo phone/line output jack with a dedicated volume control, and a monochromatic LCD display, which is easy to read even in bright sunlight.

The recorder comes with essential features for videographers including a tone generator for setting levels, sound markers for aligning audio and video, an on-board limiter to keep your levels in check when loud spikes in volume occur, and a Rec Hold function to avoid accidental operation of buttons. A micro-USB port is available for data exchange to and from a computer, as well as for use as an audio interface with a computer or iOS device.

The F1 utilizes two standard AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, or an AD-17 AC adapter (available separately), and offers a run time of up to 10 hours. The unit ships with a windshield, mic clip, and a belt clip.

    Zoom F1 Reviews

F1 Field Recorder with Lavalier Microphone is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best field recorder for the $$$! I just received two of the F1 Field recorders and LOVE them so far. As someone who frequently shoots weddings, speeches and run and gun shoots, I do not always have the time to mess with wireless mics and worry about levels or interference. The built in limiter and auto levels on the F1 do wonders. I recorded a speech last week and the audio came out flawless (even without much of a sound check because everything was run and gun with the presenter and had little time). I expect this recorder to be a game changer for our wedding films as well...can't beat the price and the quality! also, it's built like a tank..you will not damage or break this thing easily.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good start, but disappointing Im a huge Zoom fan as as I own, or have owned, the H6, H5, H4N, H1 and Q2N.  I also own a pair of Tascam DR10s.  I like the build and large display of the F1, but a lot of things make me scratch my head.  The preamps are really disappointing - if you use any other lavs than the provided Zoom the gain is low.  The unit is also bulky and they could have just totally nixed the protruding belt guides.  Not only do they interfere with the belt clip, they make accessing the SD and batteries harder that it should be (flimsy covers on both BTW).  The sound is decent on this unit, but forget using the H6 accessory mics on it - just too low gain.  Zoom needs a serious redesign on this  -

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where have you been all my life? I've been using the H4n but have often just wanted something small to put on someone so I was ecstatic when they announced the F1 and after purchasing in I have not been disappointed. It is tiny, simple and super easy to use. One thing that always bugged me about the H4n was how long it took to turn on. The F1 comes on and is ready to record almost immediately. Also, the sound quality of the included lav is quite good. I have some high end lav mics and this one can almost compete. My only complaint about the F1 is the mic clip. Even the slightest tug will cause the mic to detach. Doing interviews I would have had to reattach the mic several times.? I am now using a different clip for this set up but all in all I am very happy with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lav! This didn’t not provide phantom power. I’ve seen some questions online about adapting the 10 pin XLR to the top of this module. You can do so but make sure your microphone does not need phantom power. Other than that great so far. Super small so it’s got a tiny footprint in my bag. Powers off of AAA or USB power banks. With 32gb card at 48/24 I get about 61 hours of record time. Can loop directly into belt or with the clip onto pants or pocket. Hold button works great as well. The price point makes it worth it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing if you want to use to full potential The sound from the recording is fine, my frustration likes with the add-ons. ?I have all the attachments for the H6 and while this does advertise you being able to use them, there is currently no way to mount this to your camera, or secondary setup. IF you want to do that you have to order the other field recorder that comes with the hot shoe mount.? Kind of a bummer if you already own the shotgun attachment. And i think buying two recorders just so you can mount one is ridiculous .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as the competition Unless you can get this for dirt cheap or have blinding loyalty to Zoom, you should steer clear. I've used the Zoom H4n and Zoom H5 and had decent performance with those. I figured they knew their audio game and I picked these up the day they came out. I was debating heavily between the Zoom F1 and the Tascam DR-10L which is also sold on B&H. I really regret getting the Zoom F1 because I've already ran into some near heartbreaking problems. I primarily do weddings and just last week, I lav'd up an officiant and checked the levels. Everything was good, I hit record and put the device on hold. I get home to see that the file was recorded and was a decent size. I try and play it, though, and literally no sound... I have a pair of these and have been using them for about 3-4 months and this was the first time this ever happened. I could let it slide but the fact is, this should never happen to begin with. It's also just big. It doesn't look it, but when you hold it in your hand and then try to discreetly hide it on a groom or officiant, it stands our like a sore thumb. You might think, it's not a big deal... until you run into a client who thinks it's a huge deal. Add on top of that, the screw on belt clip is so dumb. It's held together by 1 tiny screw. I screwed that thing on tight and when I went to collect it after a ceremony, it had almost come loose. From the groom hugging and moving around, it loosened up the 1 tiny screw. There should be at least another screw to keep the belt clip secure, but nope. It's just a poor functional design. It may look cool on YouTube reviews but in real world practical uses when the unexpected can happen, you need things that are actually versatile and functional. The Zoom F1 is not it. Not this version of it anyway. Maybe version 2 or 3 when it comes out. For now, stick with the Tascam DR-10L.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product but there is a surprise Compact, Easy to use, But 4 stars rather than five...If you already have other Zoom Mics, getting the F1 kit with the Lavalier seems like the way to go. After all you can simply get the Shock Mount for an F1 hot shoe camera mount as an accessory. Think again! Zoom does not sell the shock mount separately. The only way you can get the shock mount is to buy the F1 - shotgun mic kit. It only comes with that kit. Maybe you want a second shotgun mic and a spare F1 recorder. I don't! Don't try asking Zoom to sell you the shock mount as an accessory - they won't.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustrating Useful with the lav mic, but if you already own other Zoom mic capsules, do not plan on using this to record audio using the capsules unless you want tons of handling noise. They made a shock mount to help with that (and to mount the recorder on a camera shoe), but the shock mount is not included in this package with the lav mic. It's only in the box for the version with the shotgun mic, and they don't sell the shock mount separately. There's also no screw hole on the bottom of this recorder, so there is literally no way to mount this on a camera unless you buy the other package to get the shock mount. They really should have included the shock mount in BOTH packages. Huge mistake on their part, and stupidly frustrating.

If I use this with an EXH-6, will it record each channel to its own track (for instance left channel is input 1 and right channel is input 2)? I'm thinking it would but I just wanted to be sure?
    Asked by: Sean S.
The left and right channels of the Zoom EXH-6 will be recorded on separate tracks of the recorder.

is there a dead cat wind screen that fit the lav mic for this unit? the lav mic that came with this is much bigger than a standard lav mic.
    Asked by: david d.
The Bubblebee dead kitten works great and fits perfectly. I like them even better than the Rycote. Mid size provides a snug fit for the included lav mic.

Can you use the lav mic and capsule mic at the same time?
    Asked by: Pablo Mauricio B.
Unfortunately you cannot with the F 1. Once you plug in the lav it cuts the feed from the internal mic's.
