OWC / Other World Computing ThunderBay 4 overview

  • 1Description

Add RAID 0 storage to your Mac or Windows computer with the ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 0 Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing. As you can guess from its name, the ThunderBay 4 features dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, which utilize the USB Type-C connector. There is also a DisplayPort 1.2 port for connecting to a 4K display. The ThunderBay 4 has four drive bays, which supports both 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives (2.5" HDDs do not need adapters). With the included SoftRAID software you can format the ThunderBay 4 to RAID 1. RAID 4, 5, and 1+0 are also supported with a RAID software of your choice.

Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously. Additionally, you can daisy chain up to six devices from a single Thunderbolt 3 port.
RAID & JBOD Support
The ThunderBay 4 comes pre-configured in RAID 5, but also supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, and 1+0.
Time-Tested Cooling
Built on OWC's time-tested enclosure cooling technology, the Thunderbay 4 utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with an over-sized 92mm, low turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably.
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBay 4s for more storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBay 4s to multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports to achieve higher speed capabilities.
Vibration Dampened
The ThunderBay 4's drive isolating design reduces sonic resonance adn is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet.
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
Dual Thunderbolt ports let you connect the display of your choice that your computer can support, including 4K displays.
OWC Thunderbolt Cable
The ThunderBay 4 comes with a 6.6' (2m) certified OWC Thunderbolt 3 cable.

OWC / Other World Computing ThunderBay 4 reviews

    ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Enclosure is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from PC users beware Hindsight being 20/20 I should have done more research on "how" this device works with a PC. The OWC website says the Thunderbay 4 RAID 5 enclosure works with PC and MAC operating systems. Which is true. What doesn't work with a PC, however, is the SoftRaid software so you have to use third party RAID software or the Windows 10 RAID software as the device has no inherent RAID capability. I used 4 x 6TB WD Red Pro HHDs and configured it "with parity" using the Windows 10 storage allocation process and performance was abysmal -- less that 70MB/sec transfer speed over the provided OWC thunderbolt 3 cable connected to my Dell Precision 7710 Thunderbolt 3 port. I bet if I were a Mac user it would be great. I'm not so it's on its way back to B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very fast setup and works great I've love B&H. The SSD drives and enclosures arrived in less than 24 hours after ordering! I am temporarily using this (I hope) on a 2011 Mac mini while waiting on the rumored 2018 model. I ordered 4 Samsung 860 Evo 2TB drives to replace a Lacie external drive with 2 3TB spinning drives in a RAID 1 enclosure. Setup of the new enclosure was quick since the drive enclosures easily accept 2.5" drives. Software setup and volume setup was also very easy. Black Magic shows my disk speeds using Thunderbolt 1 as: Write: 397 MB/s Read 510 MB/s. I moved over 1 TB of data from my old RAID enclosure in about 65 minutes. I hope to be able to take advantage of Thunderbolt 3 later this year. If I have one wish for the enclosure is that OWC had a similar enclosure for 2.5 inch drives so that it would be much smaller. Overall I am very happy with it!
