Xcellon CR-CFASD overview

  • 1Description

Transfer photos, videos, and other large files directly to your Windows or Mac computer, or between cards at speeds up to 800 MB/s using the 4-Slot Pro USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Card Reader from Xcellon. Built using heat-dissipating aluminum, this card reader is equipped with four independent card slots: two that support UHS-II, UHS-I, and non-UHS SD, SDHC, and SDXC media, and two others that support CFast 2.0, 1.1, and 1.0 media. All in all, this reader takes advantage of the USB 3.1 Gen 2 bus and is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 ports, providing overall transfer speeds of up to 800 MB/s, with the CFast 2.0 slots supporting speeds up to 550 MB/s and the UHS-II SD slots supporting speeds up to 270 MB/s. All four card slots can be used simultaneously with the data transfer speeds split between them.

Thanks to plug-and-play connectivity and bus power, Xcellon's card reader can be used right out of the box. However, to use all four ports via bus power, your system's USB port must output 3A of power. If it does not, then only two ports will be available. If you do not have 3A of USB power available, a 12V / 2A power adapter is included. To provide flexibility in connecting to your host system, USB Type Type-C to Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A cables are included. Protection is provided by a limited one-year warranty.

General Features

4-Port Professional Card Reader
If you're taking pictures or shooting video, the Xcellon 4-Slot Pro Card Reader offers two CFast 2.0 and two UHS-II SDXC card slots. Having more card slots allows you to effectively transfer work from simultaneous multiple cards so you can quickly get back to shooting.
Fast Transfer Speeds
The Xcelleon CR-CFASD accepts CFast 2.0 and SDXC UHS-II cards, and takes advantage of its 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 bandwidth, which provides transfer speeds of up to 800 MB/s for quick file transfers and less downtime. The 800 MB/s is intelligently split between the types of cards you connect and the slots you're using. So, while each CFast slot supports speeds up to 550 MB/s, using both at the same time would transfer files at 400 MB/s. In addition, UHS-I and non-UHS SD cards, as well as CFast 1.1 and 1.0 are supported.
Simultaneous Read/Write
All four slots can simultaneously transfer data to your laptop or desktop, or from one card to another. So, when you're done working for the day, you can download from four cards at once, or back up data between cards.
Bus or AC Powered
If you're working while on the go, this reader is bus powered using your host system's USB or Thunderbolt 3 port. For all four card slots to function using bus power, the USB port must provide 3A. The reader will still function using ports that provide less than 3A, but only two slots will be operational at a time - both CFast, both SD, or one of each, depending which two are used first. For situations where USB power isn't enough, a space-saving 12V / 2A power adapter is included.
Aluminum Housing
The reader's aluminum housing not only looks clean and professional, but it also dissipates heat, which helps to keep operations running cool. So, even though transferring large files will cause the unit to heat up, the metal chassis allows that heat to disperse. To help with efficient airflow, please ensure there are no surrounding obstructions.

    Xcellon CR-CFASD reviews

    4-Slot Pro USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Card Reader (CFast 2.0 & UHS-II SD) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good! I own a Canon C200, C100 & 1DX II and this reader is exactly what ive been looking for. When I shoot music videos I can take data off both my C200 and 1DX simultaneously using the two Cfast 2.0 slots and when I shoot weddings I can put all 4 slots to use. Saves so much time compared to sitting there and waiting for one card to copy and then doing that 4-5 times. For a wedding it used to take me 1.5-2 hours to back up all the data doing one card at a time but with this I can plug 4 cards in at once and back up an entire wedding in under 30 minutes. This reader is a must have if you are doing a multicam setup!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got Speed? I also have the smaller single CFast reader. If you are always on the go or just need something small then thats a good choice. If you spend a little more you can get this one with dual CFast 2.0 and UHS-II SD slots. The build is a lot more solid and goes really well with my G-drives. Its aluminum shell helps keep the heat away and it comes with all the necessary cables just like the smaller one. I really like how you can read from each slot simultaneously. It is still portable but you will need to make sure that your current port has enough power to use all 4 slots. If you don't this actually comes with a power cord or you can settle for using 2 of the 4 ports at a time. I plan on using this larger more robust one at the office. All my G drives are wall powered anyway so Im just going to leave this with them. A must buy if you are a URSA 4.6k or a C200/C300 shooter. Now all we have to do is wait until CFast cards become more affordable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Desktop Hero Personally media readers are the last thing on my mind when it comes to the entire filmmaking process. You spend big bucks on cameras and capture media, but getting it into your computer is almost an after thought. I'm used to just buying whatever cheap reader I can get my hands on. The 4-Slot Pro Card Reader from Xcellon has changed my thinking. The first thing you notice about this reader is the size and build. It is much bigger and much more solid than what I am use to. This isn't for ingestion in the field; this is designed to sit on your desk waiting to put in work. The silver finish even makes it look like it was meant to sit next to my mac. The speed on this is incredible. It's thunderbolt 3 compatible which means it's going to be lightening fast (I think that was an accidental pun), but even plugging this into a usb 2 port I noticed it was much faster than my other readers. This could just be me though. It does what it's supposed to do extremely well, and the ability to ingest from 4 different cards at once is clutch. My only complaint about this unit is purely esthetic. The connection port is located on the left side of the reader. Depending on where you usually place your peripherals this may be a non issue, but I would have preferred to have the port in the back so I would have the option of either going left or right of my machine. This isn't a deal breaker at all, just a minor annoyance from a person who is particular about desktop set up. All in all this is a great device and a welcome addition to my post production workflow. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built like a tank, fast and reliable I am a C200 user and having this unit which can handle 2 c fast cards and 2 SD cards at the same time is incredible. It's built like a tank but still easy to travel with. It runs without power on my iMac Pro but if you need power it comes with an ac adaptor. A great pro reader for desktop and on-the-go!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Doesn't deliver USB 3.1 speed I am currently using a Lexar CR1 usb 3.0 CFast card reader running into an Ableconn PU31-2C-2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) 2-Port Type-C PCI Express (PCIe) x4 Host Adapter Card on a MAC 5.1 Mac Pro. Connection is made using a USB 3.1 "C" type conversion cable from the Lexar to the 3.1 "C" connection. The Xcellon USB 3.1 gen 2 reader SHOULD be faster than the Lexar CR1, but the read speed as measured using the Blackmagic Speed Disc app was 365mbs vs the Lexar at 379mbs. The write speed on the Lexar was 342mbs vs the Xecellon at 340mbs. So the Lexar using usb 3.0 beats the Xcellon using usb 3.1. (The Xcellon was connected directly to the USB 3.1 gen 2 PCI card via a straight "C" type connector. No adapter was used) The only advantage that the Xcellon has, is having multiple Cfast and SD slots in one convenient location. Plus, the Xcellon mounted the CFast cards without a hitch every time, where the Lexar CAN be a bit finicky on occasions and the unit may need to be disconnected and reconnected to establish a connection when a card is inserted. This is probably the biggest advantage that the Xcellon has over the Lexar CR1. But since I already owned the Lexar and the Lexar is the faster reader, it made more sense for me to keep it and send the Xcellon back. But had the Xcellon simply equalled the speed of the Lexar, that combined with a greater functionality and dependable mounting of the cards, would have been enough reason to keep it. But it didn't, so back it went to B&H.
