Slate Digital Virtual Microphone System overview

  • 1Description

Comprising a preamplifier, a condenser microphone, and a bundle of corresponding software, the Slate Digital VMS gives you access to classic, prized microphone models heretofore cost-prohibitive in the extreme. VMS stands for Virtual Microphone System, and that’s exactly what this system provides in the form factor of a preamplifier with a flat frequency response and a cardioid microphone that is likewise flat and uncolored.

Think of these hardware pieces, with their relatively flat frequency responses, as blank canvases upon which you color the sound as you see fit. The colors are provided by means of software, which gives you preamp and microphone emulations. In the microphone department, classic 67s, 47s, 12s, and more are all represented. For preamps, you’re offered both a classic 73-style model and a 76 emulation.

You are free to drive, mix, and match these models however you see fit, both in the mixing and tracking stages. Indeed, the software doesn’t introduce latency while you record, so if you use a low-latency interface, you’ll be able to hear and feel the performance through these legendary preamp/microphone combinations in real-time, without audible latency.

Included with the preamp, microphone, and software bundle are various items, including a shock mount, a microphone case, a microphone cable, a USB cable, and more. The included software is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms, operating in AU, VST and AAX formats.

VMS-ONE Preamp
The VMS-ONE preamp ensures that your A/D converter sees the flattest signal possible from the ML-1 microphone. Its amplifiers seek to produce a pure and linear signal, giving the VMS plug-in module the ability to transform your recordings with accurate reproductions of classic microphones and preamps.
ML-1 Microphone
The ML-1 microphone is arguably the most important part of the Virtual Microphone System, because everything starts there. With a shock-mounted Mylar capsule sputtered in gold and utilizing custom-made components, the ML-1 was designed in concert with the VMS-One preamp to provide an exceedingly flat output for the VMS microphone and preamp software modules to act upon.
Included Preamp Models
FG-73: The FG-73 preamp module is modeled after a famous, discrete solid-state preamp made in Britain and used on countless recordings from the 1970s onwards. It has a bold, present, and warm sound that complements many audio sources, and even full mixes.

FG-76: The FG-76 preamp emulation is modeled on a vintage German tube preamp used on many classic recordings. It boasts a thick, colorful tone that can help enliven tracks and mixes. The bottom-end saturates in a musical way, making it a great module for bass guitar and kick drum tracks.

Included Mic Models
FG-47: This mic model recreates a venerated vintage tube microphone with a thick, full-bodied low end, rich and present midrange, and a smooth top end. This mic works well on lead vocals, kick drums, drum kits overall, guitars, horns, and strings.

FG-M7: Modeled on a dynamic microphone made famous by Michael Jackson, the FG-M7 also emulates the tube stage of a classic 47, resulting in a punchy, crisp sound with a cutting midrange.

FG-800: This is a recreation of a popular modern tube microphone, used often on hip hop and pop vocals. It’s quite airy and bright, though the bottom-end is warm, resulting in a timbre that sounds polished right from the start. In addition to vocals, this model shines on acoustic guitars and drum overheads.

FG-251: This model recreates a well-regarded vintage tube microphone with a crisp, yet warm sound. In addition to vocals, try this algorithm on electric guitars, acoustic guitars, drums, and more.

FG-800M: Slightly darker and fatter than the FG-800, this model captures the feeling of an older model with a Japanese tube stage. Use this when you like the sound of the FG-800, but want to mitigate brightness and sibilance.

FG-67: This model emulates a classic 67 microphone, giving you the dark, bold, and thick sound that mic often delivers. Vocals, pianos, and horns can all benefit from the FG-67, or you can use it as your room mic model for drum kits.

FG-269: This emulation captures a mic with the same circuit as the 67, but with a different tube stage. The result is an open and clear sound in the same German style of the 67 and 47 models.

FG-12: Taking its cues from a classic Austrian microphone, this emulation delivers a rich and smooth timbre.
