I've been using WD products for many years and this one doesn't disappoint. I'm super happy to experience its ease of use and as always, fast retrieval of my files...

A great little drive

This hard drive has been fantastic. I'd been backing up with a much older drive and needed to back up a lot of high-res photos, graphic design files, and videos. I could not believe how quickly this drive copied them over. I'm thinking about getting a second one just to be a Time Machine backup with my Mac. If you buy this, check out B&H's great online instructions for setting up the drive for your system.

Great storage drive, horrible cord!

So this drive is actually pretty good and the price was excellent at B&H when I purchased with the laptop I bought. The problem with this little guy, (and I do mean little) is its cord is so short that it keeps getting yanked out of the port. I have a laptop tray and the drive sits beside the laptop directly on the tray; every time I picked up the tray, the drive slid off the tray, came unplugged and crashed to the floor. The first time it happened I said I would be careful not to do that again; until it happened again! The second time it fell, it made noise but thankfully it still worked. It did not survive the 3rd drop. For that reason I give it 3 stars and a warning. However, I did like the drive so much that I repurchased it and use velcro strips to eliminate any more accidents.

So far so good. WD drives have always been reliable for me.

Good but an Issue

The drive holds 3.63TB or 4,000,750,792 bytes     *******************************         [[Plus] -  This drive is Plug&Play – there is no set up needed.  It’s ready to go immediately.    [Plus] -  Transfer times seem OK      *******************************     [Minus] - Compared to the older Passports, this newer Passport lost its pilot light which lets you know that it is operational and transferring data. [Minus] - This drive is slightly smaller than the same WD Passport 4 TB drive of 2 to 3 years ago and has a different case – this makes stacking of the hard drives uneven.   [Minus] New Passport emits a soft noise – this doesn’t bother me and it amuses the cat.  *******************************     [Weird] - When I backed up files from my older Passport to the newer one, the newer Passport showed 47GB of data missing.  I recopied the files and got the same results.  I performed a Disk Cleanup on the older drive and deleted 31GB of data in a recycling bin that I didn’t know was there.  Now the difference is only 16GB.   I cannot explain this.  A random check of the new Passport shows nothing missing, but who knows?

This is a great drive for either exchanging files between companies or for long term local storage. Would absolutely buy it again and again. Ships very easily to vendors.

question

is this a solid state drive?
Asked by: HQ G.
No less than 5 people said this was not a solid state drive even though the product description says SSD and the specs say that it is a solid state drive, AND the last time I bought a WD 4TB passport drive that was NOT a solid state drive, the cost was about $100, so looks like there are some serious QC issues with these answers!!

Can I connect this drive to my router and use it with multiple Macs simultaneously, read and write?

I can't imagine that this drive has the built-in intelligence to act as Network Attached Storage. Input from multiple sources would require firmware to route source information and prevent collisions.
