Lensbaby Burnside 35mm f/2.8 Overview

A unique lens characterized by its swirly bokeh, the Burnside 35 from Lensbaby is a 35mm f/2.8 prime for Fujifilm X-mount cameras. Featuring two separate diaphragms, an extensive amount of control over selective focus and bokeh quality is possible, with the ability to work with large in-focus areas or smaller in-focus areas surrounded by a distinct out-of-focus swirl. The six elements, four groups optical design also contributes to the unique look, and each of the glass elements have been multi-coated to control flare and ghosting in order to realize high contrast and accurate color rendering. In addition to fully manual exposure control, the lens also requires manual focus operation and has a minimum focusing distance of 6" for working with close-up subjects.

Normal-length prime is designed for Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Unique optical design features six multi-coated elements in four groups and is designed to produce imagery with a large area of central sharpness surrounded by distinct, swirly bokeh and pronounced vignetting.
Dual diaphragm design incorporates a primary six-blade diaphragm to control exposure and to introduce the desired amount of swirly out of focus in the image, with larger apertures producing the smallest in-focus area and most swirl and smaller apertures producing a larger in-focus area with minimal swirl.
Secondary eight-blade diaphragm can be adjusted using the bronze effect slider on the side of the lens barrel, and is used to control the amount of vignetting as well as the quality of the bokeh in the out-of-focus areas of the image. When wide open, the swirl quality will be softer and when closed down, there will be greater detail in the swirl and more vignetting will be apparent.
Manual focus design with a smooth, dampened focusing movement is complemented by engraved focus distance indicators.

I have both the velvet 56 and the burnside 35. I use the 56 for true macro and portraits. I use the 35 for what I call semi-macro where the subject is several feet from the camera to take advantage of the beautiful bokeh and vignetting. So far, I have not seen much vignett but the bokeh is out of this world. I’m still experimenting but I’m very pleased with effects that this lens produces. Construction and function are solid. Colors are rich, especially using the Velvia film simulation. Sharpness is good at f5.6 and above.

Awesome lens and lots of fun

Lens is great! Was using with x2 B1X strobes shooting at 2.8 effect and photos look insane. Must have for your camera bag.

A great experience in the realization of portraits and urban photos applying effects from the lens and not on the computer.

Loving this lens. It forces me to slow down and be more thoughtful. And, it has a great, dreamy quality. Plus, the in-camera vignetting is quite beautiful to my eye. Highly recommended.

Very Disappointing

I've been using this lens for a couple months now and if you're considering buying it, I advise you not to. It's really low quality and the novelty effects are easily obtainable in other ways at far lower cost. When I say it's poor quality, I mean it; it doesn't even mount tightly, and wobbles substantially. I could go on, but hopefully you get the point. If you're interested in swirly bokeh and vintage rendering, I'd advise you instead to get a used Helios 44-2 lens; they were made by the millions and are readily available. The famed "Helios Swirl" is actually the original anyway. An inexpensive M42 adapter for your choice of camera mount, and you have everything this lens offers at a small fraction of the cost and frankly with higher mechanical and optical quality (except arguably for the coatings, but I question the quality of coatings on this lens anyway).
