7artisans Photoelectric 25mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for Sony E-mount cameras, this silver 25mm f/1.8 Lens from 7artisans Photoelectric is a wide prime lens with completely manual operation. It covers sensor sizes up to the APS-C format, offering an equivalent focal length of 37.5mm that is well-suited for street shooting and travel photography. A rounded 12-blade diaphragm offers pleasing bokeh and smooth out-of-focus areas, with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.8 for low-light photography that can be stopped down to f/16 to improve depth of field.

The lens' optics feature 7 elements in 5 groups that are treated with a multi-layer high permeability coating, which helps reduce reflections and improve image quality. Both the manual focus and aperture rings are knurled to improve grip and are complemented by an engraved depth of field scale for easy operation. Other features include a minimum focus distance of 7.1" for close-up shots and a 46mm front filter thread for mounting a wide variety of optional filters.

    7artisans Photoelectric 25mm f/1.8 reviews

25mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E-Mount Cameras (Silver) is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised! I quite enjoy using this lens. The image quality is way above what I expected at the price point. It vignettes but I like the effect. All in all a good purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inaccurate aperture markings For the person who listens to vinyl records, wears a Swiss mechanical watch, likes to take steam powered tourist trains, and drives a car with a stick shift, this could be the perfect lens for the analog future. No electrical contacts, no power drain, totally manual control of aperture and focus distance. However, if you want to go further into the analog world and use an external exposure meter, this is NOT the lens for you. The aperture markings overstate the true aperture by 1-1/2 to 2 f stops. I know because I compared the shutter speed selected by my Sony A6000 to that which would be expected by the reciprocal of the shutter speed rule (correct exposure in normal daylight at 1/shutter speed, f16, and ISO 100). I also compared the shutter speeds indicated with this lens to the shutter speeds indicated with my Samsung manual focus lens at the same focal length, f stop and ISO. Both tests indicate the aperture is mis-marked by the amount stated above. Thus this lens is usable ONLY with TTL metering, and will overexposed if you set the aperture based on an external meter or based on your experience with correctly marked lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad, but not particularly good. Conclusion: This is a very fun lens to have and the experience of using it is generally better than the product of its use. Though images aren't terrible, they're definitely not meant for traditional high quality printing. Pros: - Bokeh is clean, smooth. - Surprisingly sharp. Considerably sharper than I expected at this price. Especially in the middle. Edges aren't bad at all and corners are have significant drop-off as expected, but it's rather impressive on the whole. - Fun. I love manual focus prime lenses. The experience knocks it out of the park for me. - 25mm ( ~37mm on my a6500) is an excellent focal range for me. - Instagram Good = "Edit" your photos and down-res them to 1080x1080 and you'll find they look pretty comparable to images from better lenses. Cons: - Very, very short focus throw. Especially wide open, it's difficult to absolutely nail the focus when a millimeter of turn pushes the focus multiple meters front or back. - Something's just a little off about the color/contrast. It's hardly noticeable in still images, but I can pretty obviously see issues in video. - Flaring and color fringing are pretty bad. On par with expectations, but expectations were already quite low. - Clickless Aperture is pretty easy to accidentally shift. Even though I do more video than stills, I would rather have it clicked. - Print Bad = Definitely not for high scrutiny use. Final Word: Properly comparing this lens to other lenses is like comparing 30fps to 60fps. If you saw 30fps videos and nothing else, you would think 30fps is perfectly smooth and fine. But once you see 60fps and then see 30fps, it looks choppy and less appealing. In isolation this lens is pretty good, but when compared to expensive lenses, you can definitely see the difference.
