ZEISS Loxia 25mm f/2.4 Overview

An impressive wide-angle characterized by its sleek form factor, the Sony E-mount Loxia 25mm f/2.4 from ZEISS is a versatile prime well-suited to variety of shooting applications, including landscape, nature, architecture, interior, and astrophotography. Utilizing a Distagon-type optical design, this lens uses one aspherical element and two anomalous partial dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Loxia-series lenses are distinguished by their manual focus operation along with a manual aperture ring that can be de-clicked for silent operation; making them especially suitable for filmmaking applications. Loxia lenses are also characterized by their compact form factor and all-metal lens barrel, which incorporates engraved focusing and depth of field scales, for fine-tuned control. Additionally, the lens body sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 37.5mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2.4 aperture helps to achieve a more compact, portable form factor while also remaining versatile for use in a variety of lighting conditions.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Two anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with a 90° focus ring rotational angle and hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
The lens mount is fitted with an electronic interface that conveys all lens Exif data to the camera and can also be configured to automatically activate the camera's focusing magnification function when turning the focus ring.

ZEISS Loxia 25mm f/2.4 Reviews

A New Old Favorite

I've had this gorgeous little lens for over a year now, and barely has any other glass taken its place on my A7iii since then. If you love classic wide angles, this is it. I've been shooting almost exclusively wide-angle for 45 years, and the Loxia 25 has now supplanted my original old favorite, the 24mm Rokkor-X that I had on my first SLR in the 1970s. It has been so nice to return to a fully manual lens, with an aperture ring and a *mechanical* focus ring (that throws only a quarter-turn, from 10-inches to infinity), which allows for focal distance and depth of field to be determined in advance. And this one is so solidly built, compact-yet-heavy, and amazing in its optical quality. Along with modern electronic viewfinders, diopter adjustment, and peaking focus assist, I have been able to get back to my original relationship between camera and subject -- now, as a 60-year-old, with not young eye-sight -- and it makes me so happy! The A7 series is a wonderful camera line but, for me, it has been made perfect with this Zeiss Loxia 25mm f/2.4.

Extremely close to perfection

This lens is a no-brainer for the landscape and architecture photographer. This thing is so sharp, is outresolves the sensor on my A7rII. I was looking for a setup that would replace my trusty Mamiya 7II + 65mm combo, and while it is not a perfect match, it is as close as one can get on a full frame digital camera in my opinion. I tried the Batis as well, but the images feel more DSLRish to me. The Loxia has characteristics more reminiscent of the Mamiya rangefinder designs.

This is the first all manual lens I have purchased. So far I am loving it! It is a good match to my AR7 III. Nice and sharp from 2.4 on down. It is quite reminiscent of the manual lenses I used when I started in photography in 1965. If you are looking for a compact quality lens for an Alpha I highly recommend this one!

The ZEISS Loxia lenses are designed for the Sony E and FE mount system only and will not work on F mount cameras with longer flange focal distances.
