Athlon Optics Argos overview

  • 1Description

Optimized to provide accurate and true views at long range, the Athlon Optics 8x42 Argos Binocular is engineered to deliver peak performance in all light conditions. It is outfitted with broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics, dielectric coated and phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms, and protective exterior lens coatings that work together to maximize light transmission through the entire light path. The results are bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution across the entire visual spectrum—even in challenging conditions like at dawn and dusk, or when peering into dense underbrush or thick canopies. To further improve the observational experience, the Argos is designed with a long eye relief, wide exit pupil, and apparent angle of view that approaches wide-angle to present an immersive observational experience that is comfortable to view for long periods of time.

Athlon thoughtfully constructed the Argos to make it easy and comfortable to hold and allow it to withstand the elements. Its overall open-bridge/dual-hinge design provides more gripping surface area than conventional closed-bridge configurations without sacrificing strength and stability. The optical tubes are argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a polymer composite chassis that is lightweight and durable as well as resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to fuzzy views over time. Ergonomic and slip-resistant armoring provides a sure grip, and ridged palm-pad and finger rest accents further improve grip strength. Athlon includes objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard to protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe during use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively. For those who experience fatigue when holding large optics for long periods, the Argos can be tripod mounted using an optional adapter for easy hands-free use.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x power magnifies views while helping to maintain a wide exit pupil and long eye relief
  • Larger 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability for enhanced low-light performance such as at dawn and dusk or when peering into dense brush
  • Compact roof prism light path ensures the optical tubes remain slim for easier handling without affecting performance
  • BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
  • ESP dielectric prism coatings boost surface reflectivity to greater than 99% for maximum light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
  • Broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission and improve contrast and color fidelity across the entire visible spectrum
  • Proprietary XPL exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
  • Apparent angle of view approaches wide-angle to present a spacious and immersive observational experience
  • Generous 371-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Open-bridge/dual-hinge configuration provides more gripping surface for one-handed use without sacrificing strength or stability
  • Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, even while wearing gloves
  • Right-eye dioptric correction allows user to compensate for optical prescription to produce sharper views
  • Broad 56-76mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
  • Twist-up click-stop eyecups for easy use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to eliminate vibrations and arm fatigue
  • Long 17.3mm eye relief allows for more comfortable viewing with reduced eye strain, especially during long-duration glassing sessions
  • Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils as they open and fully dilate in low light to keep the whole scene in view without vignetting
Construction Details
  • Bridge configuration helps to reduce weight while providing more surface area for improved grip strength, especially when using single-handedly
  • Lightweight and durable polymer composite chassis material
  • Composite material is resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to the optical components moving out of alignment over time, preventing sharp focus
  • Ergonomic body design positions the hand over the binocular's center of balance for additional comfort and reduced strain and fatigue
  • Protective rubber armor with ridged palm pads and finger rests provides a solid and secure slip-resistant grip
  • Argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature and environmental conditions
  • Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surface without the fear of losing them when not in use
