Olympus LS-P4 overview

  • 1Description

The LS-P4 Audio Recorder from Olympus features three microphones and is designed to mimic the function of human ears. It is equipped with two directional microphones to create a stereo effect with a third omnidirectional microphone that is positioned between the other two on the recorder. It can be used to capture an expanded frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz when the center microphone is on, and 60 Hz to 20 kHz when it is off.

The LS-P4 PCM recorder is compatible with FLAC format recordings that reduce high-resolution audio file sizes with no reduction in audio quality. Other features include compatibility with PCM/MP3 file formats, USB charging, built-in 8 GB file storage (which stores up to 253 hours of audio), a microSD external memory slot, and Bluetooth playback on compatible headphones.

The LS-P4 offers three microphones for a natural sound that mimics the function of human ears. It uses two directional microphones, while a third omnidirectional microphone can be engaged to record additional bass frequencies.
Sound Quality
In addition to PCM and MP3 formats, the LS-P4 can record and playback audio in the FLAC format. With FLAC files, high-resolution audio is maintained via lossless compression for smaller file sizes.
The Fade-in/Fade-out feature adds a smooth beginning and ending to your recordings. The volume will gradually adjust, increasing from the first second of the sound signal and decreasing over the last second to silence at its end.
Select from 7 preset recording scenes optimized for common recording situations. Try the Music preset for recording across a wider bandwidth or the NoisySituation preset for clear voice-only recordings in noisy surroundings.
Enjoy wireless playback on compatible headphones and speakers using Bluetooth technology. Install the Bluetooth app from Olympus on your smartphone (available for Android devices only) to use as a remote control for the recorder.

    Olympus LS-P4 reviews

LS-P4 Audio Recorder is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from One Step Forward, Two Steps Back I picked up this recorder to have something to stuff in my pocket for quick recordings. FLAC recording is great, and the Bluetooth remote is pretty cool. Also I like that it uses one AAA battery. Unfortunately, this recorder shows its price. The mics are definitely a bit noisier than the Olympus LS-100. It's a fairly good recorder if you don't need to record quieter things. If you do, stick with the more expensive LS-100. Hopefully they'll release something comparable to a higher priced offering with higher quality preamps and the new features they've introduced with this recorder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Olympus LS-P4 Initial Observations Have only had this new LS-P4 audio recorder for about 2 weeks and had chance to use it at a jazz music event to record about 1.5 hours total of some music performances. I should mention that I have been using an older Olympus LS-10 audio recorder for 3-4 years now and while I truly like that recorder on occasion for unknown reasons some of my recordings seem to get deleted in process of sampling them for playback while at a music event. Because of this decided to try a new audio recorder desirably Olympus and the new LS-P4 seemed to have nice added features and a relatively low price point. Was interested in its 3 mike system and built in blue-tooth and so purchased it. Was a bit surprised when I received this new recorder to see just how much smaller it was to my LS-10, nice in some ways with downside of harder to read display size and the two outside mikes are so small physically that there was not some foam covering over them. However, it operated easily for auto recording in mp3 and wave modes which I changed on a couple of sets. The subsequent playback seemed comparable to the larger LS-10 from prior different recording dates, which I consider overall very good. Two items at this initial first evaluation that did disappoint me was the bluetooth and the supplied rechargeable AA size equivalent battery. The Bluetooth paired easily with two different decent quality BT speaker types and sounded decent, however it did not stay synced for long, typically a couple of minutes or so and then lost sync, and took a bit of time to re-sync. However I will be using the LS-P4 this week at another musical event and will also then recheck the Bluetooth sync solidity with a third Bluetooth Radio. It would be such a shame if the problem of this BT capability is with the Olympus recorder as that is such a great feature. The other issue was the supplied NIMH Olympus battery though nice option was less useful than just using fresh AAA batteries and not having to deal with using the USB connector to charge it. So for now initially as far as portable audio recording of live music performances go am quite happy with the LS-P4. Am hoping the initial Bluetooth issues I had does not occur again and if that is the case then this recorder would be near perfect for a very small portable and inexpensive to boot digital audio recorder for on the go music events.
