Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art Overview

By B&H Photo's

Pairing a versatile range of wide-angle focal lengths with an impressively bright design, the Canon EF-mount Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM is an Art-series zoom, distinguished by its fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture to suit working in available lighting conditions. Featuring a sophisticated optical design, this lens utilizes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to minimize both chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also helps to suppress lens flare and ghosting for color-accurate, contrast-rich imagery in a variety of lighting conditions.

Benefitting handling, this 14-24mm is equipped with a Hyper Sonic AF motor with an optimized algorithm for speed and accuracy. The lens also offers a large focusing ring with full-time manual override settings for quickly making adjustments. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm improves image quality by helping create smooth bokeh, and the lens is constructed from a lightweight and durable thermally-stable composite. Additionally, a built-in lens hood helps to protect the front element as well as prevent stray light from causing flare.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 22.4-38.4mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over depth of field.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and three F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Really Fine Lens

Canon Lenses have NOTHING on the latest Sigmas. With a wide-angle lens, I always check for nasty stuff like distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. The Sigma 14-24mm/f2.8 suffers from none of these. The constant f2.8 aperture is a real plus - e.g., enables serious consideration of night sky photography. Can't beat the price either. If you're into wide-angle photography, I highly recommend the Sigma 14-24mm/f2.8

I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase this lens. After weeks of research and reviews i finally decided to go for it. This lens is so sharp with very little to almost no distortion at the widest focal length. It's a great addition to my collection and I'll be using it very often for video work as well.

I bought this lens for my real estate videography and boy oh boy it's phenomenal! The video is quite smooth, autofocus handles anything without an issue. It also makes for some really neat music video shots. I highly recommend.

Great Quality Lens

I bought this lens instead of a Nikon branded ultra-wide due to the combination of reasonable cost and great reviews. I am still getting comfortable with shooting focal lengths this low, but the image sharpness and quality I am getting are excellent. I have been very happy with the results.

An excellent lens

I rented the Sigma 14-24mm recently and came away impressed. What stood out to me the most was the lack of distortion at the wide end. It was insignificant and didn't need correcting. The only distortion of any significance is at the long end, which has a pincushion effect that some may want to eliminate. Even that is minor, however. Sharpness is easy to find in lenses today, but well-controlled distortion is much less common, particularly in wide angle lenses. If you're looking for an UWA zoom that makes your pictures look like the world in front of you, consider the Sigma 14-24mm.

question

Will this lens be able to be retrofitted by Sigma to a Sony E mount in the future as other ART series lens are?
Asked by: Chris
To my knowledge, Sigma is not retrofitting lenses for use on the Sony E or FE lens mount. They are making ART lenses that are designed specifically for use on the Sony E-mount or FE-mount lens mount (as well as other brand's lens mounts). As of the time of this response, there are currently 14 Sigma ART lenses that are designed for use on the Sony E and FE lens mounts, some already available and some that were recently announced, but which are not yet in stock (check our website for the estimated availability dates). Unfortunatey, I have not seen any announcements from Sigma Photo announcing a release of a Sony E or FE mount Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art Lens. The best I can state is to either contact Sigma directly with your inqury, or check their Press Release page or websites like B&H Photo or DPReview.com for an announcement of a new Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art Lens for the Sony E or FE lens mount.

How does this lens handle distortion? I like to go close to the talent with the Ursa Mini Pro?
Asked by: Adrian
This is a high quality lens that should show little distortion. However when getting close ups you may want to be set at 16mm or 18mm to avoid it warping too much on their faces.

Hi I am using this lens w/ Canon Mark IV too and it is better using in low light and video chats. I'm using for real estate and night pictures. Sigma Art lens generation are better, but is your option using one or the other

question

Is there a way to use filters with this lens?
Asked by: David G.
There is but it's an over-the-hood type system. NiSi has an adapter specifically for this lens called the S5. Lee Filters stated via email that their adapter for the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 won't be available until summer. I've ordered the NiSi after watching comparison videos on YouTube.
