NiSi NIP-100-HZN1.2 Overview

This 4-stop, 100 x 150mm Horizon Line Graduated ND Filter can be applied to darken the sky, specifically along the horizon during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image.

This filter achieves its effect with a 1.2 band of density across its center region that provides up to a 4-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. The band of density extends approximately 1.25" in both vertical directions before tapering to clear below and above, with soft-edged lines of transition before the clear areas. The clear areas then extend approximately 2.3" until they meet the top and bottom edges of the filter.

A narrow 1.2 band of density with larger clear areas directly above and below it allows the NiSi 100 x 150mm Horizon Line Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 Filter to specifically match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon. In such instances, the sun will appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created which is much more prominent on both sides of the sun than either above or below it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the 100 x 150mm Horizon Line Graduated Neutral Density Filter 1.2 Filter. The soft-edged lines of transition in this filter are useful for images that have features alongside the sun that cannot be confined within the band of density.

This filter is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 2mm-thick, 100mm-wide rectangular filters and is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating. The nano coating associated with this filter results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.

A leatherette pouch is included with this filter for storage and transport.

  • Compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 2mm-thick, 100mm-wide filters
  • Effectively darkens skies, specifically along the horizon during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image
  • 4-stop band of density across filter that extends approximately 1.25" in both vertical directions before tapering to clear areas that extend 2.3" until they meet the top and bottom edges of the filter
  • Creates a neutral density pattern that matches the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above the horizon
  • Density pattern to specifically match the brightness pattern of the sun when it appears at or is close to the horizon as opposed to a higher angle, which creates an increase in brightness that is much more prominent on both sides of the sun than either above or below it
  • Soft-edged line of transition between the 4-stop band of density and the clear areas above and below it are useful for images that have features alongside the sun that cannot be confined within the band of density
  • Filter does not affect the overall coloration of the image
  • Constructed from optical glass for clarity
  • Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating that results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency
  • Leatherette pouch included for storage and transport

I see there's lots of ND options for this. What will be a good recommendation for a first horizon ND filter, let's say for the sea shore and landscapes (Horseshoe Bend in Page AZ)? Thanks.

The NiSi 3 stop Reverse Graduated ND filter is a great option for landscapes like Horsehoe Bend. It features a hard transition in the middle similar to a standard hard gnd but it tapers off towards the top and lightens and is perfect for when the sun is close to the horizon line. The reverse grad is a great alternative for seascapes, dessert scenes and other landscapes with a pretty flat horizon. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1291536-REG/nisi_reverse_ir_gnd_8_0_9_100x150_reverse_graduated_neutral_density.html We also have a standard hard GND option when that is great option for scenes where the sun is well above the horizon: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1291549-REG/nisi_hard_ir_gnd_4_0_6_100x150_hard_graduated_neutral_density.html
