Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Blending a sleek form-factor with a versatile working range, the 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD from Tamron is a full-frame-compatible lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Spanning wide-angle to portrait-length, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture complements this range and affords increased control over depth of field along with enhanced low-light performance. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements, which produce a highly corrected image with reduced spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity. Elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions. Benefitting the optical design is an RXD stepping motor, which enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance to suit stills and video, along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in harsh climates, it also sports a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile standard zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 42-112.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
One XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element and one LD (Low Dispersion) element greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two hybrid aspherical elements and one molded glass aspherical element minimize distortions and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5"and a 1:2.9 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 reviews

28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens for Sony E is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 74.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect. This lens is absolutely gorgeous. Minus some vignetting, a stiff zoom, and the focal ring being behind the zoom for some reason, it's a pretty great lens. At the time of writing this, Tamron released this first roung with a pretty awful bug -- the focus doesn't work sometimes. Not just the AF, but in manual as well. Apparently this will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update through the camera. It can usually be fixed by turning the camera on in photo mode first and/or re-attaching the lens, but still. Pretty big error on Tamron's part. And hopefully the bug is fixed immediately. If not, I will be returning it. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Lens For E-Mount Great lens at any price point. Very sharp throughout the entire focal range. I have used the 24-70 G Master and this lens is just as sharp from corner to corner. I have updated the firmware and it focuses just as fast as the G Master if not a shade quicker. It does not have the same build quality as the G Master and does have some slight vignetting but that it easily correctable in post. For still photography the extra 5mm on the long end is a huge plus for portraits although for video work 28mm as opposed to 24mm made be a drawback for some. One thing that gets overlooked with this lens is the close focus capabilities which can help when trying to do macro work. Buy this lens. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I had a review before FW upgrade, and now after FW upgrade. Down somewhere is my review that you do not buy this lens for video work until you see what a firmware upgrade will do. So Tamron issued an firmware update and as i can see it corrected that major flaw. So, kudos to Tamron, i do recommend buying this lens now. As far as the lens and its quality, it is rely amazing. My AF frustrations are over and i am starting to enjoy this glass making videos with auto focus. Image quality is more than i expected, on my a7iii sensor it is making gorgeous photos and videos. Enjoyable lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All around great lens, fantastic value This lens is fantastic in many ways. It is super sharp, it has great color, it focuses fast, it is light, and construction is good. I was a Canon shooter and I owned many canon lenses and this lens is much sharper than any of my old Canon lenses. I had the Canon 70-200 IS II and this Tamron lens is sharper then my 70-200. I no longer have to add sharpness in post. This is a great all around lens. Video focus is just like a native Sony lens. I have had this lens for 6 weeks and I have not had any issues with it. It is a tremendous value for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Look no further, must own for any Sony A7 III owner. Well, I am blown away by this glass. Im an really happy with the really light weight and the quality of the images. The focus is exactly as any other Sony lens, covers a great range of focal lengths and it can easily be your daily go to lens. Yes you have to adjust to the the position of the focus and zoom. But after a couple hours of shooting this gets second nature. Really recommended. If you are lucky to get one you won't be disappointed. I have found any focusing issue with my glass and have been using it extensively with both photos and videos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the money Purchase in late June 2018, I have not had any of the focus issues reported. That being said I mainly photo shoot with very little video. You will get the reported vignettes and some bowing both easily corrected if for professional use otherwise its minor and most non trained eyes would not be able to tell. Love the lens, quick autofocus / eye AF and very sharp. All of that plus what I consider its best feature, the size. Travelling means keping pack weight down and this lens is fantastic at only 550 grams far less weight and bulk than the GM lens. Perfect for travel, street walking, touring, backpacking etc. Love this lens and cannot be beaten for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all around lens So far great lens. Really sharp. It was meant to replace my SEL2870 f3.5-5,6/28/70. It is a big improvement. I like to do available light at parties and weddings. Moving up from a A7 to A7 III helped, but the new Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 makes a dim bar appear like outside in the sun. Shooting uncompressed, raw is a big help. People are amazed at the pictures I'm producing in really poor lighting conditions. Actually it's hard to avoid overdoing it and loosing the ambiance of the occasion. The only problem I have had is that the size specs are the same as an Sony lens I have but the Tamron lens won't fit in my bag with the lens cap on. Aparantly Sony includes the lens cap in their specs and Tamron doesn't. Great lens for the price and size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Focus issue in video mod make this lens useless I bought this lens for Sony a7 iii (mine is with serial number below 00700, so one of the first samples) in order not to manual focus any more. But this lens is not focusing right in 8 out of 10 videos that i make, which makes this lens a paperweight with price tag of 820 euros. I heard of this focus "issue" (which is not an issue, but a major problem) but i understood it is rear and sometimes, and i will manage until firmware update. This is not rear or sometimes, it is sometimes working. Do not buy this lens, (until you see what will upgrade do) or use it as an extravagant paperweight.
