Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Overview

  • 1Description

Blending a sleek form-factor with a versatile working range, the 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD from Tamron is a full-frame-compatible lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Spanning wide-angle to portrait-length, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture complements this range and affords increased control over depth of field along with enhanced low-light performance. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements, which produce a highly corrected image with reduced spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and clarity. Elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions. Benefitting the optical design is an RXD stepping motor, which enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance to suit stills and video, along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in harsh climates, it also sports a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile standard zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 42-112.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
One XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element and one LD (Low Dispersion) element greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two hybrid aspherical elements and one molded glass aspherical element minimize distortions and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5"and a 1:2.9 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Reviews

28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens for Sony E is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 104.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My go-to lens I got the Zeiss 24-70 F4 when I bought my A7 in 2014 and it was good. When I got the A7III in 2018 I started to do my research. I got the 55 F1.8 and loved it! I got the 85 F1.8 and loved it! But I really missed the simplicity of the 24-70 and the no lens switching. Then comes Tamron with this lens! I love this setup, so smooth, simple, and sharp! I havent done super peeping but it looks as good as my primes so far. Now I keep the primes on the A7 as a backup depending on the shoot. The only regret I have is that I didnt order when it was $798, but it was never in stock. As soon as it came in stock the price went up to $879... really?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love it! So lightweight and amazing. One of the things holding me back from purchasing the 24-70 2.8 all these years was the size and cost of the lens. However, it became clear that I really needed this lens on my Sony. I use it a lot for corporate events and the 2.8 aperture is a must. I saw an ad for the 28-75 f/2.8 in a magazine and immediately purchased it. Not only does it take amazingly sharp pictures, it is so much lighter and smaller than the 24-70s out there. It fits in my lululemon festival bag on my sony a7rii so I can carry it around when I am out and about without having to take a full on camera bag. It is so small and lightweight I dont even need a strap. Love it!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lens electronics cause BANDING at high ISOs I really like this lens. It is sharp, small and light. It focuses fast and the constant f/2.8 aperture is great. However, the lens electronics interfere with the sensor and cause banding in underexposed, high ISO images. I am going to return mine and see if a newer version of the lens has the same problem. If it does, Ill probably sell my A7R3 as well, since this lens was the only reason why I bought it. By the way, how do I know it is the lenss electronics? If you slightly unscrew the lens, then the electronics of the lens can no longer interact with the camera, and the issue disappears. I am attaching both images to show the difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, lives up to the hype Ive taken the lens out the past couple of weeks and am very impressed by its sharpness through the scope of the lens and while longer in length, its lightweight and well balanced on the camera. The focus and zoom ring are opposite to what Im used to but got the hang of it no time. The only criticism I would have so far is that during low light and challenging conditions, it struggles with focus on my Sony A7RII. Its only happened a couple and to be fair, it was challenging, but just havent noticed the same struggle with my other sony/batis lenses. Other than that, Id recommend this lens as a great alternative to the pricier Sony options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect. This lens is absolutely gorgeous. Minus some vignetting, a stiff zoom, and the focal ring being behind the zoom for some reason, it's a pretty great lens. At the time of writing this, Tamron released this first roung with a pretty awful bug -- the focus doesn't work sometimes. Not just the AF, but in manual as well. Apparently this will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update through the camera. It can usually be fixed by turning the camera on in photo mode first and/or re-attaching the lens, but still. Pretty big error on Tamron's part. And hopefully the bug is fixed immediately. If not, I will be returning it. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Lens For E-Mount Great lens at any price point. Very sharp throughout the entire focal range. I have used the 24-70 G Master and this lens is just as sharp from corner to corner. I have updated the firmware and it focuses just as fast as the G Master if not a shade quicker. It does not have the same build quality as the G Master and does have some slight vignetting but that it easily correctable in post. For still photography the extra 5mm on the long end is a huge plus for portraits although for video work 28mm as opposed to 24mm made be a drawback for some. One thing that gets overlooked with this lens is the close focus capabilities which can help when trying to do macro work. Buy this lens. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I had a review before FW upgrade, and now after FW upgrade. Down somewhere is my review that you do not buy this lens for video work until you see what a firmware upgrade will do. So Tamron issued an firmware update and as i can see it corrected that major flaw. So, kudos to Tamron, i do recommend buying this lens now. As far as the lens and its quality, it is rely amazing. My AF frustrations are over and i am starting to enjoy this glass making videos with auto focus. Image quality is more than i expected, on my a7iii sensor it is making gorgeous photos and videos. Enjoyable lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All around great lens, fantastic value This lens is fantastic in many ways. It is super sharp, it has great color, it focuses fast, it is light, and construction is good. I was a Canon shooter and I owned many canon lenses and this lens is much sharper than any of my old Canon lenses. I had the Canon 70-200 IS II and this Tamron lens is sharper then my 70-200. I no longer have to add sharpness in post. This is a great all around lens. Video focus is just like a native Sony lens. I have had this lens for 6 weeks and I have not had any issues with it. It is a tremendous value for the money.
