Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art Overview

Both fast and wide, the Sony E-mount 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM from Sigma is a unique wide-angle prime designed to produce high-resolution, well-corrected imagery. As part of the Art line of lenses, this lens has a focus on image quality and rendering, and utilizes both FLD and SLD glass elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity. Four aspherical elements, including the front large-diameter precision-molded glass element, also contribute to reducing distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accuracy. Complementing the optical performance is an equally adept Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance. This focusing motor also enables full-time manual focus override at any time just by rotating the focus ring for refined manual control and focusing as close as 10.6". The lens barrel is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite material, which supports working in a wide variety of temperatures and conditions, and the lens mount is constructed from brass for long-term durability and mounting accuracy.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Prime wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 21mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low and difficult lighting conditions.
Three F Low Dispersion (FLD) and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Four aspherical elements, including one large, 80mm-diameter precision-molded glass aspherical element, help to minimize distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

Large aperture is the key for astrophotography. This lens is the best for astrophotography so far.

First off, let me just say that this lens is amazing! I bought it to go out and shoot the Milky Way. The wide angle is perfect for capturing the great expanse of the sky and the f-stop is fast enough to capture fine details and light when there would otherwise be no way. Additionally, the lens produces some amazing images with very little profile correction needed in post-processing. While it is a bit on the heavy side and the price is pretty steep, if you're looking to do astrophotography, look no further. Attached are some of the shots I took during my first attempt ever at capturing the Milky Way.

I've reviewed this lens before but after some more hands-on experience, I would like to provide some update. Overall a very competitive lens in the field of astrophotography. Even without a tracker, the long exposure time made possible by the ultra-wide angle and the large aperture make it absorb so much light. Plus the ultra-wide also produces some of the most stunning photos of the Milky Way. Highly recommend!

I purchased this lens for Astrophotography using my Nikon D5500 after reading numerous reviews and it defiantly delivers tac sharp images of the stars and the Milky Way. Now I'm using it on my new D850 and loving it even more. The glass is heavy but super clear in night and landscape images. Great time-lapse lens both day and nights.

Exceeded Expectations!

I bought this lens to be used for special circumstances, but I'm using it way more than I ever thought I would. I really appreciate it in low light tight areas. I film weddings and the other day I used it in a low lit cramped mansion. I was able to capture all the murals, paintings and vintage architure of the building in natural lighting in one shot. I can shoot wide open at 1.8 and it's still sharp. I also use it alot during dancing portions of receptions when there are lots of people and no space. The lens is sharper than I thought, I use it more than I thought, the distortion is not as bad as I thought, it's bigger and heavier than I thought. This lens far out weighs my lumix 24-105, so it takes longer than I thought to rebalance for gimbal use as it far out weighs all my other lenses.
