Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

A wide and fast Sony E-mount prime, the 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a member of the highly regarded Art line of Sigma's Global Vision Series and is characterized by its advanced optical construction and robust physical design. The combination of three "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) elements and four Special Low Dispersion elements help to achieve a marked reduction in chromatic aberrations, while a pair of aspherical elements, with one positioned in the rear of the lens, minimize a variety of additional distortions and aberrations. The 15-element-in-11-group optical design is poised to deliver consistent peripheral brightness and sharpness, even when working at the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical performance is an equally adept Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance. This focusing motor also enables full-time manual focus override at any time just by rotating the focus ring for refined manual control. Additionally, nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Prime wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 36mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness, along with consistent edge-to-edge illumination. A pair of aspherical elements, with one in the rear of the optical design, correct for sagittal coma flare, distortion, and axial chromatic aberration, while also enabling full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained peripheral brightness and sharpness.
Three FLD and four SLD glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.

A fantastic alternative to the pricey Canon L 24mm prime. Great build quality, great image quality. Shooting full frame, this is the perfect whole-room lens without stretching out the people at the edges of the frame too much. Great for wedding receptions when you want to be right in the middle of the dance floor!

Glass is everything!

OK, it's not cinema glass. I primarily use this with all of our A7Siii's. For the price it delivers 90% of what I need it to do. Sure, you can pixel peep things to death, but ultimately it's all in how you use and maximize the tools you have.

Sharpness and boke on par with the brilliant Canon 24mm L II... lucky for me because my Canon cracked in half on a hard to to a rock.

Best 24mm EF lens

This is still hands down the best 24mm optically for SLRs. Bought this lens twice, that is how good it is. Autofocus may not be the best, but I manual focus a great deal and optically this is the best 24mm I have tested for EF cameras. You can also adapt it on almost all mirrorless.

Good WA Lens for Astrophotography, with some caveats

I conducted some star tests with this lens mounted on My Canon EOS 6D from my heavily light-polluted location in Pittsburgh. First impression is that the lens is heavy, with a good quality, solid mechanical build. Manual focus is smooth. Focus on bright stars is easy, due to its bright max aperture. Exposures taken at max aperture, however, show obvious tangential and sagittal astigmatism, as well as chromatic aberrations around the edges of the 3:2 frame. Aberrations are not noticeably reduced until the aperture is stopped to f/2. Beginning at f/2, sagittal astigmatism is gradually reduced and is entirely eliminated at f/2.8. Some tangential astigmatism is visible, but completely eliminated at f/2.8. Dark aureoles (raccoon eyes) encircle bright stars, but are almost entirely eliminated at f/2.8. Introducing a CLS-style clip-in filter ahead of the camera's sensor results in severe tangential astigmatism and slight chromatic aberration, and is not completely eliminated at f/2.8. So, for a clean image, clip-in filters should not be used with this lens. Still, under a dark sky and without a clip-in filter installed, this lens should perform at a high level, and is a good investment for the price.

24mm Sigma lens--fast glass

Shooting indoors with no flash in a musuem is a tough problem. This is more choice. I agonized between 20 or 24mm but went with the Holiday sale version. 1.4F is a must for dim - no flash musuem and the resolution of this is excellent

I know that the sigma art lens line for canon/nikon is not weather sealed. What these ones?
Asked by: Peter
The Sony FE versions of the lenses have a small rear gasket, so it is something, but still - not weather sealed.

will there going to be a problem or issues if i use this on sony a6600?
Asked by: Manuel
It will work with all of the usual functions. There are a couple of things to consider: 1. You will have the equivalent field of view of approximately a 35 mm lens. 2. The lens is quite large (791 gm, 5 in long mounted w/o hood)
