Comfortable, well thought out. Great size for backcountry skiing and day trips. Can fit as carry-on but not made for it.

Great design and quality but the core units are quite stiff

I received the pack some weeks ago and it's a great design. The quality of the material, zippers and seams is superb and the design of the back and shoulder straps is top notch. I've owned many backpacks through the years (for climbing, skiing and hiking) and this one is super comfortable. It's only the core units that are quite stiff. Maybe I should have got the other units that also fit and I might add that later. I recommend this bag for serious outdoor photographers.

Exceeds expectations

I looks at tons of reviews and watched countless YouTube video and settled on this pack without have ever touched it or even heard of the brand before my search. If you are an outdoor photographer of any level, this is a great pack. Well designed, quality build, easy access to equipment, VERY comfortable on the trail. Possibly my favorite feature is the side pouch that secures a tripod. Excellent. Thanks

Absolutely love this bag. Great for travel personal item for flights and the chest and waist straps make it very comfortable for all day gear lugging. My only note is the lap top sleeve is a pretty tight fit for my 15 inch MacBook, but at least it fits.

You can keep this bag

I will keep this simple...horrible bag, poor quality construction, Shimoda is a terrible company to do business with, this bag is just one disorganized, wasted space design. Luckily I was able to return it after trying for a few days to organize things in a useful manner which never happened. I went to a Think Tank Backpack bag... Great Company, great design, great quality.

I had posted previously about this product with a 4* review, however, about a month afterwards, I saw 2 tears in the interior material of the pack due to me carrying the laptop in that back, outer compartment where there is space for a 15 laptop (interior compartment against your back will only fit a 13 ultrabook). After contacting the company, I was basically told tough luck, deal with it. I wouldnt buy shimoda products again.

Just so so

This is definitely one of those purchases that barely meet the minimum standards basic features. No place for tripod just straps Not even a small pocket to keep it slipping out . Modules that hold the camera and lens are not very sturdy .

Almost Perfect

First, as a backpack this is outstanding. Very adjustable and very comfortable even when loaded with gear. There are also multiple attachment points for things like tripods, trekking poles, etc. Now for the things that could be better. 1) There are two little drain holes in the bottom which I assume is to allow leaking water from a hydration bladder to drain. Water can go in as much as go out and the only thing that separates the water from the camera gear is a thin piece of nylon. I don't use a bladder so plugged these up since I tend to shoot around wet areas. The side access is pretty much useless. It is unnecessary with a pack this size because you will need to take it off to get your gear no matter what. A water bottle pocket would have been a better idea. On the other side of the pack is a large pull out pocket which can hold a large water bottle, but is way too big and cumbersome. Better to have left it out or put the water bottle holder there. Last thing, The two core units are perfectly sized and work well, I would recommend more flexible dividers thought. The stiff ones make it a bit more difficult to customize the fit. Don't take this for a negative review. The great features of this pack, fit and layout are much more important than the little nitpicks listed here.

Is there a way to carry a water bottle and tripod ...

Is there a way to carry a water bottle and tripod on the sides? Does this have a pocket on each side ?
Asked by: Nancy
The Shimoda Designs Explore 40 Backpack Starter Kit (Blue Nights) has a removable pouch in the side panel pocket which would allow you to secure a tripod to the side of the pack. The front of the shoulder strap has a pouch into which you may insert a water bottle or other similarly-sized item.
