I gave it 3 stars because portrait view doesn't hold. Landscape view is great, and it's easy/smooth to move around.

Securely holds my Canon 5DSr with the L bracket and the 400 mm lens with no slipping or wobble. Easily adjusts, even with gloves on.

Reliable, Heavy Duty, Use with Cameras and Telescopes

With 5 tripods, 1 monopod, two astro mounts, holding various cameras & telescopes, I needed to standardize on one Swiss ARCA ball head. I chose this Vanguard BH-300. Reliable, sturdy, smooth, the BH-300 holds my Sony 200-600mm lens or Williams Optics GT-81 telescope no fears. (I use the smaller BH-250 on the lighter tripods.) Now all the knobs turn the same way. Only wish to Vanguard would be indent both sides for astro. It's a nit - you can swivel the ball 180 deg easily enough. And not if it compromised solidity. This thing is a tank. 100% satisfied.

If an arca swiss plate is long enough to hang ...

If an arca swiss plate is long enough to hang over the end of the clamp will the stopper screws still function as a safety to stop the plate from sliding out of the clamp?
Asked by: Helen
The Vanguard Alta BH-300 Ball Head does not have grooves to accommodate safety pins on a plate. If the plate is long enough for the pins to stick out on both sides, these can prevent the plate from sliding totally out. Though if the plate is to short, you may need to remove the safety pins. Additionally, on the head itself, located inside the clamp is a safety pin that prevents the plate from sliding out if the clamp is partially opened.

Do the safety stopper screws need to be removed from the arca swiss plate to work with this ball head?
Asked by: Helen
You would need to remove the safety stopper screws if the plate is not long enough to hang over the end of the clamp. This clamp does not have a channel to fit the screws in and even if it did, it may not work with arca plates of different manufactures because there is no standard on where the channel should be.
