You get what you pay for. I've gripped a lot on smaller shoots to larger ones, and Matthews lives in the tier along with American Grip that's accepted by almost every serious film professional. The cheaper but cruddier ones from Impact and Avenger (Manfrotto) work fine, but you'll run into moments where the bite jaws just jam and cannot be undone easily. I have yet to jam a Matthews grip head by misaligning the jaw and then fail to unjam it using a simple wrench to tap it gently and break the lock. I think part of this is due to how the Matthews grip head is difficult to overtighten. The avenger grip head has a slightly larger tie down which gives more torque, which unfortunately encourages overtightening the grip head. Overall, keep it simple stupid. This works well, is machined well, and will seldom let you down.

This is one swanky grip head. It really should come with a diamond necklace to hang from it. Love the smooth black finish. This will be used with pleasure and confidence. And it's not expensive.

This item arrived well packaged and early. It works great! I couldn't wait to mount this on my Avenger boom and put my Dynalite 2040 flash head on it. This Matthews Hollywood Head is easy to work with because of its big handles. Easy to tighten with your hands than with your fingertips with tiny knobs. See photos

In addition to the 3/8" & 5/8" holes, the Hollywood grip head has a third - very small - notch that extends through the plate. It's such a small notch and I cant figure what would fit in it. Can anybody tell me the function of this notch? Thanks!
The third and smallest hole is designed to grip onto Fingers and Dots, which are very small scrims and cutters. It can also be used to bite large gauge bailing wire or whatever smaller wire rods one may be working with. Mono-filament line may also be threaded through that hole.
