Lenovo Mirage overview

  • 1Description

The Lenovo Mirage Camera can capture everything in front of you with point-and-shoot simplicity. Its dual 13MP cameras feature wide-angle fisheye lenses which, when stitched using your phone or computer, can render a hemispherical 180° field of view in both 2D and 3D. Video resolutions up to UHD 4K can be captured at 30 fps.

After you finish recording your videos and snapping photos, use the free Android or iOS app to play them back and share. You can also wirelessly control the Mirage using the app. Connecting the app to your Google account opens up further capabilities such as live streaming in the VR180 format, straight from your phone.

In the box you get a USB charger with a cable, two batteries, and a storage pouch. While there is some storage space available on the device itself, you'll want to opt for a separately available microSD card (up to 128GB).

Immersive Photo and Video Capture
Dual 13MP fisheye cameras and 180x180° FOV allow you to capture and experience in-depth stereoscopic photos and videos with high resolution and faithful 3D rendering.
Easy to Use
No need for specialized VR videography skills or professional camera gear. Just aim and start recording or capturing.
Easy to Share
The Mirage camera is natively integrated with Google Photos and YouTube. The specialized VR180 format, viewable as standard 2D or stereoscopic 3D (with or without VR devices), works well for sharing on widely accepted platforms.
Live Streaming
Instantly live stream what you capture. With the high video compression format, high-resolution videos are smaller and quicker to live stream.

    Lenovo Mirage reviews

Mirage Camera is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice camera, but I'm not able to edit the video using FCPX Negatives: (1) if you want to see what you take you need to use the phone which is a bit awkward (one hand for the camera and one hand for the phone; I think I'll try rubber band to strap the phone to the back of the camera) (2) I seem to get my fingers in the photos because the stick out front (I need to remember to move them beyond the front plane) (3) I don't know how to put together the video clips into a single film using FCPX (FCPX supports 360, but I'm not certain how to use it for VR180). There are some instructions on the web for Adobe Premiere, but I don't have it. Positive: VR180 and 3D appears to be a good combination.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera - New product issues Amazing picture & video quality. The 3D images really pop! It should be noted that in video mode, when the camera moves, so does the viewing area inside the VR headset. Example: Camera is turned the opposite direction while recording, the viewer with headset playing the video will have to physically turn around to stay in view of the video.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent. Not half bad. Not half good, either. Con: Photos dont have HDR, a feature that all cell phone cameras have had for the last few years. So photos tend to have blown out light areas or extremely dark areas in photos of mixed lighting conditions. Pro: File sizes aren't as gigantic and large as other 180/360 photos/videos from other cameras.Much more manageable. Cons: The wifi is dreadfully slow. It takes a very long time to transfer files. Streaming also seems to be handicapped at a very slow bitrate. Pro: I like the simple aesthetic. I also like NOT having a viewfinder. Just shoot it and forget it. It makes me more carefree to take more pictures and not worry so much about getting perfect framing. If I need framing, I can fire up the app. Con: I hope the 3D 180VR filetype that the Mirage Camera uses becomes more widely supported. Right now only lenovo and google products seem to support it. Other VR headsets are having problems viewing the photos/videos. Pro: The steroscopic effect is excellent. You can really see a little bit of depth. No, you wont feel like you are actually there, but its better than 2D! Con: Microphones could be better. Sound is a little tinny. Pro: Super light and pocketably Con: No case and the lenses can get smudged way too easy. Pro: USB-C ALL THE THINGS! Con: No accessories for sale. No wall charger, No extra batteries, No 180 compatible tripod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great 3D camera for travel I bought this camera for an upcoming trip and from the testing I've been doing I haven't been disappointed. Colors are bright and sharp outdoors, although somewhat muted a grainy indoors and low light levels. The lack of a viewfinder is a bummer, however there is an app to preview, and make changes but for me its easier to just point and press the button. The videos are 100% compatible with viewing in VLC and inside Premiere and DaVinci for editing. some tweaking needs to be done since they import into Premiere a little squeezed, but thats an easy fix. The only downside is that the camera records in the VR180 format (side by side, fisheye) which is not "officially" supported by the Oculus Rift right now, but you can use the Whirlybird app the watch the videos on the Rift without problems. I would have given this 5 stars if not for the grainy low light footage and the VR180 record format.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Still Overheats during 4K recordings I purchased this camera because it boasts 4K stereo video recordings. I was going on an Alaskan vacation and thought this would be perfect to capture the moment. I tested it on a drive to work and the camera's software alerted me to it overheating on the phone app. After 12 minutes of recording, it did just that. I had the AC running in the car and it wasn't a hot day anyway. After a few more issues with the camera shutting itself off, I reached out to Lenovo tech support. They claimed this wasn't normal and I should return it to B&H where I purchased it. I called and asked for a cross-ship. B&H required me to purchase another and they would overnight the replacement. I did so and got the new camera a day before the trip. I boxed up and returned the original. I recorded a 4K video on the trip and got the overheat message 28 minutes into the recording. The camera still shut down. There was an update message, but the wifi on the ship didn't seem solid enough to download it. I'm hoping this problem is fixed in an update, but haven't had time to test it since returning from the trip. I plan to do so tonight and will return the camera if it doesn't perform as expected. Otherwise, under proper lighting conditions (Bright!) The images look awesome.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overheating is an issue I really like the stereoscopic effect of the video. I feel like I'm there when I'm watching it through my VR headset. I like the fact that it uploads to Youtube so I don't need to edit in a video editing software. It would be nice if Google provided some basic editing capability online so I can put together a series of clips from the same event. However, a major problem with this camera is that I'm getting constant overheating warnings even after a few minutes of use making it unusable. I bought one of the first ones so maybe I got a bad batch.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good image quality, but annoying firmware bugs. I bought this camera to capture VR memories of our new baby. The quality of the VR pictures is great and the videos are pretty good (using the 4k setting) given the price of the camera. Unfortunately, this product suffers from some annoying bugs and I honestly don't understand how it got released in this state. Let me list them: - in VR videos, audio and video track are desynchronized by up to 0.6s. This is very noticeable! The offset is random and varies from video to video, so you cannot easily fix them in a batch but have to do it one by one (using ffmpeg, for instance) - downloading videos to my Android phone (Pixel 2 XL) is very instable. It looks like the camera goes to sleep after 3 minutes, but the download of a camera full of video (8GB) takes more than half an hour. I was not able to transfer more than a couple of pictures wirelessly but had to use a cable or remove the sd card. - the VR postprocessing tool (Google VR180 Creator) is not available for Windows (yet?) - only for Mac and Linux - the camera is slow. Start up time is about 30 seconds and immediately after the shutter does not work for another 10 seconds or so. Shutter lag for taking pictures is more than 1s. - the Android VR180 companion app (which is required to use the Mirage Camera properly as it doesn't have a display to switch settings, for instance) is instable, slow, and has only the bare minimum set of features: There are almost no settings and the video and image playback is very minimalistic as well. There's not even an option to view content in Google photos (which has a much better interface) I hope Lenovo will address these issues in an update soon. Lenovo, if you fix only one thing, please fix the audio/video synchronization problem. But if you want to have customers returning to your brand I suggest you fix all of these issues.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Easy to use, not useful I was expecting big things based on reviews, but I am very disappointed. It may be easy to switch on and use, but with no way to edit (it isn't recognised by my iMac), it becomes quite useless. If you're interested in VR, buy a PS4 Pro, PS-VR and Garmin VIRB360. Easy to use, results are good enough.
