Has anybody use this on a Mac pro mid 2010 5,1 mounted on a pcie Express card into a pcie slot? If so what read write speeds are you getting?
Asked by: Adam
I can’t answer for 970 EVOs specifically, but I have 970 PROs installed in 2x MacPro Mid-2010 towers (5,1, CPU 3.33 GHz 6-core Xeon / 48GB / Mojave 10.14.6 / 970 on a PCIe I think x4 card) with the BootROM updated so that I can boot MacOS from them and am getting these numbers using BlackMagic v3.3: 1TB 970 PRO (MacPro #1) Write: 1442 / 1427 / 1441 / 1453 (MB/s) Read: 1497 / 1488 / 1497 / 1494 (MB/s) 500GB 970 PRO (MacPro #2) Write (MB/s): 1261 / 1283 / 1309 / 1350 (MB/s) Read (MB/s): 1394 / 1392 / 1342 / 1376 (MB/s) Early versions of Mojave installed a 5,1 BootROM version that would have timeout errors with the 970 EVO NVMEs, so I got the 970 PROs instead (not sure the 970 EVO Plus was available then). I’ve later read that the most recent 5,1 BootROM version had fixed this issue. I have no input/advice/responsibility for anyone attempting to update the cMP 5,1 BootROM (i.e. you’re on your own), but here are a couple forums.macrumors thread TITLES related to doing such: MP5,1: BootROM thread | 144.0.0.0.0 MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave (BootROM upgrade instructions thread) Some time later when I updated my son’s cMP 5,1 to use/boot a 970 EVO, I did run into a problem where a SATA SSD on a PCIe card was preventing the BootROM update from occurring and temporarily removing the SATA SSD/PCIe card solved that. Also note that S.M.A.R.T. is NOT available from my 970 PRO + PCIe card setups.
