Built-in Wi-Fi is also integrated into the design, which facilitates wireless image transferring and remote camera control from linked smartphones or tablets.

16MP Live MOS Sensor
Using a 16MP Live MOS sensor, the GX85 is capable of capturing clear, high-resolution stills as well as UHD 4K video. The sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution, and its design also affords a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, fast shooting performance is also afforded, with the ability to shoot at up to 40 fps with an electronic shutter function, 30 fps at 8MP using the 4K Photo Modes, 10 fps with AF-S and an electronic shutter, or 8 fps using a mechanical shutter with AF-S.
UHD 4K Video Recording
In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the GX85 also supports recording UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100 Mbps in the MP4 format. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported, in both MP4 and AVCHD formats, as well as HD and SD resolutions. A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter for cleaner audio quality when shooting outdoors.
4K Photo Modes
Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 min. 59 sec., making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
Dual Image Stabilization
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. combines the GX85's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.
Depth-From-Defocus AF Technology
For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in order to suit working with continuous shooting rates up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • An integrated 2.76m-dot electronic viewfinder offers a bright, clear eye-level means for composing images, and features a 0.7x effective magnification.
  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear OLED monitor has a tilting design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
  • Nine programmable function buttons can be used to control a wide variety of settings and tools.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets.
Other Camera Features
  • A mechanical focal plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 sec., as well as a top flash sync speed of 1/160 sec. An electronic shutter function also avails a top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec. to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings.
  • Photo Style modes: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, L. Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom.
  • Creative Control modes: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

Panasonic DMC-GX85 Reviews

Pretty good camera

By Malik
Rated 5 out of 5

It's a great camera in my opinion it's actually smaller than I thought, has lots of features and a screen that comes out but not entirely out, but it's good for low angles if you really trying to see the screen but can't with your current camera this camera will do the trick. My first camera was the Nikon D3400 which is still pretty good but I just wanted an upgrade which is why I got this one. Dslr and mirrorless cameras are different but are also similar. One thing I learned about this camera is it has an electronic viewfinder which was weird for me when I first used it, since I was used to the DSLR one. But overall it's a good Camera plus the accessories are worth it. You get two lenses 12-32mm, and 40-150mm I believe. Both are pretty good I use the 40-150mm the most though since I could zoom in a lot more and all. It includes a 64gb sd card, a bag, and a UV filter from what I remember. The filter comes in handy. Keep your lens clean yall! Anyway yeah this camera is good in my opinion but of course watch some reviews before you buy so you know what to expect. Also my name is my Instagram if you want to see the pictures I've taken with the camera!

I photograph for fun, and occasionally use my Nikon DSLR for work related projects. I wanted a smaller camera to travel with, and the GX85 and two kit lenses were certainly priced attractively. I love the feel and flexibility of this camera but will probably be satisfied with the tiny and light 12-32mm zoom for travel shooting. With that lens, the GX85 fits in a jacket pocket. Still image quality has been excellent. The video is nice, but I doubt I will use it much for my purposes. The built-in flash is very convenient to have when you need it, and I often will. Flexible, adjustable and fun are the words I would use to describe this kit, and, as always, BH delivered promptly!

This is my first camera with exchangeable lenses. I feel like I got a good deal on a decent camera! I have been pleased with the image quality and the ease of use. YouTube and the Tech Corner were helpful in getting familiar with the menus and settings. Admittedly, I didn't do a lot of research into sensor sizes prior to purchase, but I think M43 meets my needs well. I plan on using this camera for travel photography and taking pictures while hiking, so I appreciate the compact size. Planning on taking it to the Galapagos Islands later this year!!

Great Kit for the Price

This kit is a great deal. The 12-32mm kit lens is super compact and amazing with this camera! I would give the kit 5 stars if it came with a different telephoto lens than the 45-150mm. It's a fine lens, but just that-nothing really incredible to write home about as far as image quality. It's kind of an awkward focal length as well, telephoto-but not quite telephoto enough. If it would open up a little more than f4, it would be incredible. For a camera over 5 years old, the GX85 really holds up well!

Are the kit lenses any good?
Asked by: MASAITIS
In brief these are decent lenses. The 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6, a 24-64mm equivalent is however autofocus only. The 45-150mm f/4-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens (Optical Image Stabilization)is auto/manual focus is a 90-300 equivalent. Both lenses are lightweight and make a great travel kit. While neither will give very good low-light performance, there are many other lenses that will if you want to spend additional $$. I love my GX85 and the quality of images it captures. The camera is no longer available except in the kit with the lenses. As an owner of Lumix GH3 and GH5 cameras the GX85 is a great backup system that can utilize all the same lenses and adapters for my higher end cameras. The menu system amongst the Lumix line is intuitive and identical except for specific higher end features of the more expensive cameras.

Asked by: Paris
Absolutely. This is a powerful compact camera that produces RAW image files. I've used it on many occasions to do just that and am amazed at the quality. One note is that I batch process the RAW images in the sequences using Photoshop. Once processed the images are easily imported as a sequence into Premiere Pro for temporal editing or compositing, etc.
