    Tascam DR-40 reviews

DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Luminous Gray) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 570.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean audio, versatile recorder I love this recorder, but Tascam could have included some form of protection for carrying it, even if only a cloth bag. Looking around the internet I found that a Pelican 1040 case is just the right size to store/protect the DR-40 and an Audio-Technica AT8202 attenuator. The attenuator is a must have if you are going to tap into a dj or band's sound, for their signals are often too strong, even when dialing down external input levels to the DR-40's lowest setting. My unit came with an older firmware, 1.02, but upgrading to the current 1.20 firmware is very easy - Tascam even offers instructions on their website. In all I'm very happy with this purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Functional, a bit noisy. Let me start by saying my expectations for this product were set high from everything I'd read. Probably too high given the very affordable $ price. It meets my expectations 100% except for the amount of noise it induces. I got Tascam support on the phone and verified that what I was seeing is normal. To make a long story short . . . with the input gain all the way up (had to do this for several mics I own) the noise floor is around -40Db. With no mics even plugged into the unit the meters and Db display show a -40DB, un-steady, signal. The noise comes out easily using post-processing (Adobe Audition in my case) but I did not expect to have to do this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most versatile handheld recorder I have ever used. This has to be the most reliable piece of equipment that I have ever had in my arsenal. It has at least a thousand hours of recording and it still works as well as the day I opened it.  The internal mics work well, although I would only use those if I forgot my external mics.  The interface is easy to use and I love that you dont need to depend on the battery since it can run on USB. This was important to me because most of my shoots lasted the entire day and worrying about the battery levels wouldnt be preferable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value for the price I record a daily radio feature and record my audio on the Tascam DR-40 instead of my computer soundcard. I bought a second one recently because I travel, and when I do I have to record my show on the road and I was tired of unplugging the first Tascam from my studio set-up. I was also paranoid that I would forget to take it, or would leave it somewhere, so I bought an identical one for backup. The two internal microphones are very good quality, but you need a windscreen because they are very sensitive. I use the external microphones when I travel and the line-in setting in the studio, with very good results with both. Really like the fact it has XLR inputs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great recorder, average preamps The DR-40 is a great external recorder with many different uses. It has some really useful features. The built in mics are high quality, the interface is easy to navigate and it has a nice solid feel in your hand. You should note however that it won't work with certain mics. For example, I bought it to use with my RODE NTG-2 on my film productions, but I then discovered that the preamps in the DR-40 were not powerful enough for the mic I was using, and that I would either need a preamp or a new mic. Consider all this before you buy the Tascam DR-40, but don't let it discourage you! This is a great audio recorder at a great price!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it is good based on it is price I bought this recorder on the daily deal zone from B&H, the build quality is not that good, it is from Plastic which looks and feel not really great, the SD card slot rubber is crazy, and not easy to remove, the build in microphones are kind of lossy, the menu is easy to use and navigate, the screen orange backlight is not comfortable, overall, the quality of the reordered audio via the XLR inputs are good,  I have been using the Sony PCM-D100 for years now, and I am in love with the Sony recorder, I just bought this Tascam DR-40 to use it as back up or to rent it when possible, it is good recorder if you dont have enough money to buy better one

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is a great recording device How: I bought it so that I could record our services on Sunday mornings. We have a mobile church and so we have to set up services weekly. This way I have the content on a sd card and do a little post production and then send it to be posted. Great: I like the clarity and the versatility. I am not good with having the patience to look through the manual -so i went on line and learned all the features. Not so great: I have not found anything yet. It does what I tell it to - I am impressed with the quality and how far we have come from the 4track - tascam that I used to use. oh no I just showed my age. another sign i am getting old - i refer to old technology.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DR-40 Audio Recorder I bought this unit to record live performances. The 4-Channel feature allows recording from sound mixer from the control room (live mic's) as well as sound of live audience, in two separate files. The sound quality is great. It is easy to be mounted on a tripod. The only major deficiency for me is that the timed delay recording would be much more useful if it allows user-set delay time to minutes or even hours. It currently only allows a delay value of a few seconds, which is not useful. I would like to set up the recorder near the stage, set a delay value of say 30min until the show starts, and go back to operate my video camera.
